Now to that horrific pit bull attack on the Upper West Side. Another dog fighting for its life
0:05
tonight following that violent incident. Fox 5 Meredith Gorman spoke with the owner of that dog
0:09
She joins us in the newsroom right now with more on this. And Meredith, that video is frightening. Arthur, it's a very scary and sad situation going on and some of the images you'll see ahead
0:19
might be disturbing. She is still really, really hurting. A dog is fighting for her life Sunday
0:28
night after the owners say this disturbing attack occurred on the Upper West Side and was caught on
0:34
camera. Penny, a 10-year-old chihuahua mixed who is a service dog, was on an evening walk on Saturday
0:43
night with one of her owners when they tell Fox 5 they encountered these two people with pit bulls
0:50
What you're looking at is video obtained by Penny's owners. They say the pit bulls unprovoked
0:55
attacked Penny. We are not showing the entire incident due to its graphic nature
1:00
As we passed these dogs, I think the woman from behind let go of one of the dogs and the
1:08
man turned around and led his other dog onto Penny and they started attacking
1:17
They picked her up from both sides like together as a team It seemed like they were led on to her and he did nothing to try to stop them
1:29
Once they were able to free her from the pit bull's jaws, Penny's owners say they rushed her to the animal hospital
1:36
It's still very much on the edge right now. I mean, it's a miracle that she survived it up to this point
1:43
she suffered substantial trauma and is injured all over her body. Now they hope and wait to see if she'll survive
1:53
Her owners tell me they've filed an animal bite report with the police
1:56
and they're now organizing complaints and are concerned other dogs in the neighborhood have gotten into incidents
2:02
with these dangerous dogs. Unfortunately, dogs are considered property. and because dogs are property, they're not subject to criminal prosecution
2:14
City Council member Gail Brewer says she's considering legislation. I've also gotten a lot of complaints about a similar situation in Central Park
2:24
different persons, same problem, and nobody is doing anything about it. Penny's owners tell me they're doing all they can to identify the owners of these pit bulls
2:35
who they say fled the scene. They're also asking the community to come forward with any information they may have
2:42
including any similar experiences for pet owners around the neighborhood. Arthur. Thank you very much, Meredith
