Coyote howls keeping Bronx residents up at night

Now to some coyote chaos in the Bronx, the howling so bad that some people say it's keeping them up at night

Foxey's Linda Schmidt is on the prowl for us tonight. So take a listen to this

This is Mother Nature at its finest. I am on the 16th floor of an apartment building in the Bronx

And this noise traveled all the way up here. I just heard the craziest noise

Summer Kaltner got a spectacular show at 8 o'clock Sunday night from her apartment balcony

My first thought was, oh my goodness, I would not want to be down there with that

It was a pack of coyotes in the Spite and Dival section of the Bronx, serenading residents

It's a little bit deceiving with coyotes because even a handful of coyotes that are in a pack or in a general area

they can sound like a lot more animals than it actually is. It probably just a small amount of animals five maybe six animals that are just making a large amount of noise Keith Lovett is with the Bronx Zoo So what is all this howling about It territorial

They're basically setting their boundaries. It's a form of communication. But as much as anything else, it's territorial calling to other animals that may be in the area

most notably other coyotes. At 3 o'clock in the morning, they seem to have a convention

People are quite nervous about it, you know, keeping their small pets indoors

and things like that. It's kind of scary. Coyotes are not anything new in the Bronx

Experts say they have been a part of the urban landscape for quite some time, feeding off rats, mice, and rabbits

Lovett says the small packs of coyotes can move around. So in the meantime, sit back and enjoy Mother Nature

Oftentimes in urban environments, you lose out on some of that wildlife you would see

in more rural or suburban areas. So just appreciate it and recognize

and that you have a while left in New York City and appreciate the calls that you were hearing that night
