Yes, Steve and Natasha, just a terrifying scene on the campus of Florida State University
0:18
after that gunman opened fire on campus. That gunman, the 20-year-old son of a longtime Leon County Sheriff's deputy, we are told
0:27
The violence began just before noon near the student union. Police say they acted fast and were able to neutralize the shooter when he did not comply with their demands
0:37
In all, two people were killed. They were not students. And it's believed at least five others were injured
0:44
The shooter also was injured. According to surgeons at the local hospital, the victims suffered serious injuries, but they are expected to recover
0:51
The shooter is 20-year-old Phoenix Eichner. And he's the son of a Lennon County Sheriff deputy
1:03
Unfortunately, her son had access to one of her weapons. And that was one of the weapons that was found at the scene
1:14
So according to Tallahassee officials, the shooter was an active member of the Sheriff's Youth Advisory Council
1:20
that gun is believed to be his mom service weapon It was decommissioned when she received a new one She was able to keep it as a personal weapon There are also reports that the gunman may have had a shotgun on him that jammed
1:35
which is when witnesses say he actually ran back to the SUV and got the handgun
1:39
The shots rang out, and we were like, is that construction going on or what was happening
1:43
And so he got up, looked out the window, and I remember looking outside and hearing five more shots go off
1:49
And I was like, what's going on? So I saw kids running away from the student union
1:54
And I walked away from the window. Then I walked back to the window and heard six, seven more shots ring out
2:00
He shot off towards us and didn't make the shot. And then he turned back into his car and grabbed a pistol
2:08
And that's when I watched him shoot the lady in front of him and realized that he was really trying to shoot people
2:17
And I started running. The gunman isn't cooperating with police. He's evoked his Fifth Amendment rights. It's unclear if his mom will also be questioned or maybe even charged, as we have seen with other mass shootings
2:30
Now, in a cruel twist of fate, some of the students that were inside the student union when the shooting erupted were also at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, when that mass shooting occurred
2:43
Natasha, we don't know if any of those students are among the injured today
2:47
That is so traumatizing. All right, Teresa, thank you so much
