Pope Leo XIV is not wasting any time serving the people
0:04
He celebrated his first Mass this morning as Pope. And Good Days, Robert Moses joins us now with a look at what else the Holy Father has going on
0:13
Good morning, Robert. It looks like it's a busy day and week ahead for the Holy Father
0:17
It is, Tina and Dan, and it's an exciting time, I think, no matter what faith you ascribe to
0:24
24 hours ago, 69-year-old Robert Francis Prevost was a cardinal working with 132 other cardinals to elect the next pope
0:33
Well, now he is the pope, Leo XIV. And this morning inside the Sistine Chapel, as you can see as we speak, he is celebrating his first mass as pontiff with those other cardinals
0:44
He is a busy few days ahead. Last night, he made a surprise visit to the Vatican Palace where he lived
0:51
He will deliver his first Sunday noon blessing from this balcony of St. Peter's Basilica
0:56
the same place where he greeted the crowd in Spanish and Italian after his election yesterday
1:02
Then on Monday, he plans to meet with the media in the Vatican Auditorium
1:06
At the end of this month, he may very well travel to Turkey. That would be his first international trip as the Holy Father
1:12
In between all of those public engagements, there will be plenty of private behind-the-scenes decisions
1:19
large and small, that will shape the direction of the Catholic Church. Now, in contrast to his
1:23
predecessor, Francis, Leo wore the traditional red cape as he spoke to the crowd yesterday
1:29
in St. Peter's Square. Now, at this morning's Mass at the Sistine Chapel
1:33
the pontiff spoke mostly in Italian, but did deliver a message in English
1:39
I want to repeat the words from the responsorial psalm I will sing a new song to the Lord because he has done marbles And indeed not just with me but with all of us my brother cardinals as we celebrate
1:55
this morning, I invite you to recognize the marbles that the Lord has done, the blessings
2:01
that the Lord continues to pour out upon all of us. Through the ministry of Peter, you have called
2:09
me to carry that cross and to be blessed with that mission. And I know I can rely on each and
2:17
every one of you to walk with me as we continue as a church, as a community of friends of Jesus
2:26
as believers, to announce the good news, to announce the gospel. And the Pope likely gave a lot of thought to his chosen name, Leo XIII, who served from
2:38
1878 to 1903, he came to be known as the Pope of the Workers for his advocacy for a living wage
2:45
and workers' rights. And in the 13th century, Brother Leo was a friar and companion to St
2:51
Francis of Assisi. By choosing the name of Leo, this new pope could very well be signaling his
2:57
desire for continuity with his predecessor, Francis. Guys, I don't know if you listened to
3:02
the way he said Marvel and Cardinal. He sort of has that Midwestern Chicago accent. I went to
3:09
school in Chicago and I can hear that accent a mile away. Oh, that's great. So it's very cool to
3:16
hear him speak in English. And as I said, most of it was in Italian, but I wanted to share that
3:21
English sound with you from this morning. Robert, thank you so much for bringing us
3:25
that segment of his homily and his sermon this morning. Really appreciate it
