Delivery trucks, they keep us stocked up on everything from furniture to electronics to even groceries, but we also spent a lot of time dodging them in and out of traffic
0:08
So now there's a new pilot program on the Upper West Side aimed at cutting down on the number of delivery trucks on our city streets
0:15
Lock-Side's Arthur Chan shows us how these micro hubs work. We're all ordering delivery more than we ever have before, more than maybe we'd like to admit to ourselves even
0:25
We get like five deliveries a week? Maybe like five or six. Our increased reliance on deliveries, whether it be Amazon or otherwise, has led to a sharp increase in delivery trucks, which leads to more double parking
0:37
So, just in time for this Earth Day, the city's unveiled micro hubs, designated parking spots for trucks where they can offload to cargo bikes or push carts for the final stage of a delivery
0:48
Instead of having truck double parking on our street and in front of New Yorkers' homes
0:55
we have created dedicated space for safer unloading and deliveries Bollards have been installed at the city first three micro hubs all of them on the Upper West Side two on Amsterdam Avenue one on Broadway
1:09
The city says 84% of us New Yorkers are now ordering at least four deliveries a week
1:14
and that keeping trucks off narrow side streets will make a huge difference
1:18
I mean, yeah, why not? Yeah, give it a shot. I think in some areas, for sure
1:24
Like when, yeah, a truck stopped and like no one can move for like forever. Like, yeah, it's very annoying just to like deliver one package
1:31
Some, however, point out Thurside Street doesn't have a bike lane and wonder where the delivery bikes will ride and park
1:37
If those cars can park safely on the street, I think that's the most important thing
1:42
City officials emphasize this is a three-year pilot program during which they intend to collect a lot of data
1:47
including whether by giving trucks this lane to work in that there's less double parking by trucks in those lanes of traffic
1:53
In all, the pilot program calls for 36 micro hubs to be installed and studied to see if the city's new use of street space is worth sustaining
