And we're following several breaking news stories. We're now learning air traffic controllers at Newark Airport lost radar for 90 seconds early this morning
0:15
And Pope Leo XIV celebrating his first mass as pontiff. His message to the cardinals who voted for him
0:24
And good afternoon, I'm Teresa Priola. Welcome to the News Block. We're going to get to those stories shortly, but first, there's been some major first flooding concerns in this area
0:32
Let's take a live look outside right now. It seems as though the weather has improved just slightly, not the deluge we were seeing earlier
0:40
but let's bring in Liv Johnson for a first look at our forecast
0:44
Hey, Liv. Hey, that's right. We've gone through the worst event, and you can see on our satellite radar, most of the system has moved north and northeast
0:52
Now, as Teresa said, we do have some flood watches and warnings in the area
0:56
Pretty much everywhere north of New York City is under a flood watch
1:00
We had Long Island that was also under a flood watch. Now it's kind of just hang on to Connecticut, the lower Hudson Valley
1:05
We have it in Monticello as well. But Fairfield, Connecticut is under a flood warning, and that is for the next day or so
1:13
So like I said, most of that system has moved along. So we actually have some good things on the way
1:18
I still wouldn't really get too far away from your umbrella for the rest of the evening
1:22
And late night, we have a couple more just straggling showers out east on Long Island and into Connecticut
1:27
That's around midnight. But most of us will be dry going into Saturday and Sunday
1:31
And we have beautiful, clear skies for our Saturday and Sunday. It's actually a really nice weekend ahead of us
1:37
Temperature-wise, a lot cooler than yesterday, between about 14 to 25 degrees cooler than just 24 hours ago
1:44
That puts us at the mid to upper 50s throughout most of the tri-state. Some of us are in the 60s, like Belmar and Long Island
1:50
but tomorrow, better things ahead. We'll get back up into the upper 60s
1:55
Some of us will get into the 70s. And then, like I said, a really pretty weekend ahead of us
2:00
We're to 71 on Saturday, 73 on Sunday. We have a beautiful Mother's Day ahead
2:06
Even a nice start to the week, Monday, a high of 74. Then we have some more showers midweek
2:11
And then a big warm-up on Friday, you see a high of 85. Teresa? Yeah, that's incredible
2:15
All right, Liv, thanks. All right, none of that breaking news that we're following out of Newark Airport
2:19
air traffic controllers losing radar for 90 seconds early this morning. What's worse
2:25
this marks the second time this issue has occurred in just two weeks. Let's get out to
2:30
Meredith Gorman, who's live in Newark Airport. Meredith, have things improved there
2:36
Yeah, so we've seen a lot of people getting off of their flights, heading down to baggage claim. But
2:41
again, Newark Airport lost radio communications and radar displays overnight for the second time
2:47
in the past two weeks. The airport definitely seems a lot more quiet than usual. But here's
2:53
the statement that we got from the FAA about this situation. They said, quote, there was a
2:57
telecommunications outage that impacted communications and radar display at Philadelphia TRACON Area C which guides aircraft in and out of Newark Liberty International Airport airspace The outage occurred around 3 a on Friday May 9th and lasted approximately 90 seconds Now this comes after another radar outage caused air traffic control computer screens to go dark
3:21
for about 60 to 90 seconds on April 28th and also stopped controllers from being able to
3:27
communicate with aircraft. There was a ground stop at Newark earlier this morning and now delays are
3:33
averaging a little over four hours. New Jersey Representative Josh Gottheimer just spoke saying
3:39
Newark lacks staffing levels and infrastructure, and he says the airport is short 40 air traffic
3:45
controllers and that the tower they work in was built in 1973. I visited the tower here actually
3:53
not long ago and saw firsthand how antiquated the systems are at this airport. Air traffic
3:58
controllers working grueling around the clock shifts. Some are working overtime without air
4:02
conditioning, having no, having to pass little pieces of paper. If you've been in the tower
4:07
they're literally passing little pieces of paper to communicate. Paper slips, exposed pipes
4:13
roofs ready to cave in around them. You got to see this thing. There's already been a shortage of air traffic controllers after a handful of them ended up
4:24
taking medical leave due to the traumatic situation they experienced. The first time
4:29
that there was this outage just within the past two weeks. Now, the FAA does say that they're
4:35
installing new fiber optic data lines to help that radar signal between Philadelphia and New York
4:41
where this incident and the facilities are located. But, Teresa, this isn't something that
4:46
can just happen overnight. Definitely not a quick fix. All right, Meredith, thank you for that
4:51
report. Now to the Vatican and Pope Leo XIV celebrating his first mass as pontiff
4:58
My brother cardinals, as we celebrate this morning, I invite you to recognize the marvels that the Lord has done
5:06
For many, that's the first time hearing the Pope speak English. He went back to speaking in Italian
5:11
Pope Leo says the role of pontiff is a cross to bear, but also a blessing
5:15
In a call reminiscent of the priorities of his predecessor, he said the Catholic Church must press ahead with its missionary outreach in the far corners of the globe
5:24
The first American-born pope making those remarks at the Sistine Chapel in front of the cardinals who elected him
5:30
Meantime, those cardinals facing the media today. I really think that we were not simply counting on the forces that were within that room
5:41
We were remembering that it's the Holy Spirit who brings the church together
5:48
And it's the Holy Spirit who makes reconciliation possible. as the Holy Spirit who calls for it and indicates
5:56
And so we just needed to be sensitive to that. We're following developing news
6:01
Jury selection now postponed until next week in Sean Diddycombe's federal sex crimes trial
6:06
The last part of jury selection will start 8.30 Monday morning. The defense said the juror strikeout process
6:12
would not last more than 20 minutes, but prosecutors are arguing that could avalanche and take hours
6:17
therefore delaying opening statements and witness testimony. One of those early witnesses is Cassie Ventura The goal is to complete jury selection with 12 seated six alternates and three extras before 9 a Monday morning with opening statements and
6:31
that witness testimony rolling on right after. Mayor Eric Adams is in Washington, D.C.
6:37
where he's meeting with Donald Trump right about now. According to the mayor's office
6:42
the two leaders will discuss, quote, New York City priorities. We're keeping a close eye on
6:46
the meeting and we will bring you the latest updates later on in the five o'clock news
6:51
Breaking news from Columbia University. Sixty-five students there have been suspended following pro-Palestinian demonstrations earlier this week
6:59
Police are saying nearly 80 protesters were arrested Wednesday during the demonstrations
7:05
Those arrested were taken in by police for processing and charged with criminal trespassing
7:10
Witnesses say the demonstrators forced their way into the library on Wednesday afternoon
7:16
And more breaking news. a Tufts University student being detained in a Louisiana immigration center for more than six
7:22
weeks has been released. The federal judge said that she can remain free pending a final decision
7:28
on her claim that she's been illegally detained. Her lawyers say her detention is a violation of
7:34
her constitutional rights. Now, Ozturk is her last name. She's from Turkey. She was arrested in March
7:40
The Department of Homeland Security says she engaged in activities in support of Hamas
7:44
And we'll be right back right after this. Stay with us. It's all here. Spectrum
8:20
All right. Welcome back. Concerning news for commuters in New Jersey. Could an NJ Transit
8:24
strike be on the horizon? The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers is meeting to discuss
8:28
where things stand with contract talks with the nation's third largest commuter railroad
8:33
This all comes as both sides will head down to Washington after being summoned by the National
8:37
Mediation Board. So they're fighting for a wage increase, but New Jersey Transit claims they just
8:43
don't have the money to pay the kinds of salaries that these workers want. May 16th is the deadline
8:48
for an agreement to be reached. Well, it's finally Friday and there's plenty of activities and events
8:53
that are happening across our area this weekend. Fox High's Ryan Christopher has a preview
9:07
Kendrick Lamar and SZA take over MetLife Stadium for the Grand National Tour in New Jersey
9:13
Well, you know what they say. If it ain't broke, don't fix it
9:26
That's broke. I gotta fix it. Give mom the gift of laughs this Mother's Day weekend
9:32
as funny man George Wallace takes the stage at NJPAC on Sunday with two shows We can just let them win Mayday working on a plan to kill extremist commanders If you want to fight then let fight together
9:44
Experience one of the hottest shows on TV in person for the final season of Handmaid's Tale
9:49
Check out the Paley Center's exhibit, June's Evolution from Handmaid to Rebel
9:54
A well-tailored suit with all of the attendant accessories is a touchstone of the dandiest closet
10:00
and is the focus around which Superfine is designed. And as we saw the dazzling looks of dandyism on the blue carpet at Monday night's Met Gala
10:08
now you can experience the exhibit in person at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's super fine tailoring black style
10:15
I've always designed tracksuits to elevate the men that wear them. So I really love that it could be included in the concept of dandyism
10:23
And what does this moment mean to you in your career? I mean, I feel like it's a big deal to be here in the Met
10:27
I think it's a pinch me moment. So I'm quite gobsmacked that I'm part of this exhibition
10:34
Ryan Christopher, Fox 5 News. All right, let's bring in Liv for a look at the forecast
10:39
I've actually quite enjoyed the rain the last couple of days because my allergies have been killing me
10:43
That's true. But I am looking forward to some sun this weekend. Yes, I know. There's some good and bad to it
10:48
And we had some nice days mixed in this week. But, yeah, right now we're looking at pretty chilly temperatures
10:52
I mean, I think it feels chilly compared to what we've been enjoying
10:56
58 degrees for New York. We have 48 up in Boston, 57 down in Philly, and you can see warmer air to the west, and that's what we are about to get
11:04
Wind speeds aren't too bad right now, 5 to 15 miles per hour throughout the tri-state
11:08
No wind gusts, but that is going to change tomorrow. Even though we have a beautiful weekend ahead of us with nice temperatures and a lot of sunshine tomorrow
11:16
we will see some more breezy conditions, wind gusts between 25 to 30 miles per hour at their peak
11:22
So this area of low pressure still hanging on. It's been giving us problems for days, but now we have some high pressure that's going to move in
11:29
and that's what's going to give us clear skies for the next few days
11:33
Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, all looking good and pretty warm as well
11:37
Now, we still have a chance of seeing a little bit more rainfall. It's really just a drizzle for most of the tri-state area moving forward
11:42
but it's a little more for areas out east, like East Hampton, up in Hartford
11:46
another inch or so that we can expect, and that's why we have flood watches
11:50
and warnings for a lot of areas north of New York City. Lows tonight, 51 degrees in New York
11:55
We have 49 out on Long Island. Same thing up in Hartford. 48 for the Hudson Valley
11:59
49 down the shore. All of us very close to each other. And then tomorrow, nice and warm
12:04
Pretty average for this time of year. Mid to upper 60. 68 if you're out east on Long Island
12:08
We have 71 for New York City. 72 for Newark and Trent. 68 up in Poughkeepsie
12:13
Hang on to those nice temperatures for a few days. A beautiful Mother's Day. You can make plans outside before some showers return mid next week
12:20
Teresa. All right, Liv, thank you so much. And that's your news block for now. I'm Teresa Friolo
