We're following efforts in El Salvador to get a man deported by mistake returned to the U.S
0:09
This while new reports say an email is making the rounds urging immigrants to self-deport
0:15
And jury selection continues at this hour in day two of the retrial of Harvey Weinstein
0:20
And so far it's been slow going when it comes to picking a jury. Good afternoon. Thanks for being with us. I'm Steve Lacey. Welcome to the News Block
0:26
those stories in a moment. But first, let's take a live look outside right now. It is chilly out
0:31
there and windy. Yet again, April drags on. Nick, when's it going to stop? Crazy. More like taking a
0:36
step back into March. And it is a windy, chilly afternoon. A lot of clouds, kind of what we
0:40
expected today, Steve. And we're only in the upper 40s now for the city. Mid-40s there to the Hudson
0:43
Valley by Poughkeepsie. Low 50s near the coast. And again, the wind sustained speeds 15 to 25 out
0:50
of the west-northwest. But we're gusting 35 to near 40 miles per hour. No wind advisories up
0:55
But look at this. We do have a frost advisory overnight. That's down as you head into Middlesex County in New Jersey and Monmouth County on south and west
1:01
So temperatures there will be approaching the lower 30s and the potential for some frost. In fact, we're talking low 30s to the north and west, about 40 in the city in the morning
1:09
As we clear the sky out, we'll get back to at least above 60 degrees tomorrow
1:13
A little better than by then, Steve. Very well. All right. Thanks, Nick. Breaking news now. U.S. District Judge James Boesberg threatening to open a contempt inquiry into the Trump administration
1:21
over what he's calling its willful disregard for his orders to turn around planes
1:26
carrying deportees bound for El Salvador. In a 46-page opinion, the judge said there is probable cause to find the administration
1:34
in contempt for its actions. That development comes as Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollens in El Salvador
1:39
now meeting with the country's president to advocate for the release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia
1:45
the man mistakenly deported by the Trump administration. As I've said before, the goal of my visit is to talk to people here about the release of Kilmar
1:55
Grego Garcia. I told his wife and his family I would do everything possible to bring him home
2:03
and we're going to keep working at this until we're successful. I also hope to have the chance
2:08
to meet with him, but we'll have a better idea if that works out a little later on
2:13
The Supreme Court has instructed the government to facilitate Garcia's return, but both U.S. and Salvadoran authorities have so far refused to comply
2:22
Day two in the retrial of Harvey Weinstein. His jury selection continues at this hour
2:26
No jurors have been selected thus far. Yesterday, potential jurors made it clear they could not be fair in judging the former movie mogul
2:33
Currently, Weinstein's being housed at Rikers. His legal team filed a petition with the court to move him to Bellevue
2:39
A spokesperson for Weinstein says, quote, it's inexcusable that Harvey Weinstein, who is battling cancer, diabetes, and a host of other
2:46
serious medical conditions, is being subjected to such neglect and mistreatment under the care
2:51
of New York City. Developing news now out of the Middle East. Iran confirming the next round of
2:57
nuclear talk. Thank you

Welcome back. Buying a car, new or used, can be stressful as with any big purchase
5:44
Arming yourself with as much info as possible. Heading into the negotiation is critical
5:48
Our guest today, Zach Shefska, helps empower car buyers through his online platform, caredge.com
5:53
to make sure everyone gets as much car for their buck as possible. Zach, thanks so much for being with us today
6:00
Hey, Steve. Really appreciate it. Glad to be here. Of course. All right. So give us the sense of the mood
6:06
you deal with car buyers, car dealers, new and used. There's obviously a lot of uncertainty
6:11
right now with the tariffs. Will they? Won't they? Etc. What's the mood in the car biz
6:17
as a whole right now Oh man it a lot of uncertainty Like you said consumers are feeling the pinch already We seen new car prices already start to take up just a little bit The average advertised price for a new car is over The last time it was up above was December of last year
6:34
So we're already seeing a slight uptick in advertised prices. And the used car market, it's heating up really, really quickly
6:40
So on the consumer side, it's a lot of frustration. Like, hey, I can't already afford a vehicle, and now they're getting even more expensive
6:46
So that's kind of the consumer mood. But on the dealer side, it's actually like a little bit, a little bit, excuse me, like when the pandemic started a couple of years ago
6:53
The expectation is that there's going to be less inventory, still demand
6:57
And it means dealers might be able to make a bit more money, just like they did at the beginning of the pandemic
7:00
So it's a lot of uncertainty. No one really knows what's going to happen next
7:04
But it seems like those are the dynamics at play and not great news for consumers, in all honesty
7:08
Yeah, you know, it's pretty wild. It really has been a five year roller coaster. when you date back to the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, there were really no cars available
7:17
no new cars available because of the supply chain issues. And that continues to ripple through the
7:21
market to this day. We've been talking, you know, earlier this week, we spoke about how the fact
7:26
that there were really not that many new cars five years ago means there's not that many low mileage
7:32
high quality used cars today, which is sort of leading to all sorts of issues as well
7:38
I mean, the average age of a used car getting sold right now is 6.7 years old
7:44
So you go to a dealership, the average age of a used car inventory is 6.7 years old
7:47
You might be thinking to yourself, OK, Zach, what does that matter? What do I care? Well, just five years ago, before the pandemic, it was 5.1 years old
7:54
And the average mileage on a used car today being sold on a dealership lot is over 70,000 miles
7:59
And when prices have gone up over those five years and the cars are older, they've got more miles, it doesn't really make much sense
8:05
And so, yeah, consumers right now, the area where they do have leverage is if they have a vehicle to trade in and sell
8:10
So that's kind of the bright spot in the market today is, you know, if you've got a good quality used car
8:15
dealers are looking to get their hands all over them because the cars at the auctions are so expensive
8:19
And then obviously on the new car side, you put a 25 percent import tariff on things
8:24
The prices will eventually go up. And we've already seen some automakers restrict bringing inventory to the United States
8:30
They've said they're going to wait and see before they import more vehicles. Fortunately, the auto industry had built up a lot of new car demand or a lot of new car supply
8:37
Excuse me. Almost three million new cars were in inventory before the tariffs went into effect
8:41
So there's a lot of inventory on the ground. That's why Ford can do things like employee pricing for all
8:46
They had like a four month supply of inventory sitting around. So, you know, there will be a ripple effect here
8:51
There are some ripple effects from what happened five years ago in the past. And that you word uncertainty continues to be the major theme
8:59
Yeah, no doubt about it. You know, and certainly, you know, fundamentally, I do think people are sort of intimidated by buying a car
9:04
It's something you probably do once every five years, whereas the dealer's doing it every day
9:08
They know the ins and outs. That's something you certainly help educate people with. Walk us through the three biggest mistakes people need to avoid when they go to buy a car, either new or used
9:18
OK, new or used, and you don't want to make a mistake. Keep these three things in mind
9:22
Do not just walk in there thinking about that monthly payment. You need to absolutely understand what's called the out-the-door price
9:28
So you go in and you say, hey, you know what? My budget's $399 a month
9:32
The dealer's going to find a way. He might have just signed up for a 96 auto loan but the dealer going to find a way to get you there So mistake number one focusing just on the payment and not on the out price Mistake number two if you do have that trade all you have to do is use some of these online resources to get cash offers
9:48
We have a resource back on our website. You can go to Carvana. You can do whatever you want
9:52
Go ahead and make sure you have some leverage on your trade-in if you have a trade-in
9:56
And then the final mistake that I would really caution and advise you not to make would be to
10:00
get pre-approval for financing. That is one of the areas where the dealership makes the most money
10:04
And as a consumer, you can come in armed and equipped, get a pre-approval for your financing, either through a credit union or your bank
10:11
And so that way, when you do finance or purchase your vehicle, you have some leverage there as well
10:15
When the dealer says, hey, congratulations, we got you approved at 14.99%, you can say, oh, okay, I'll just go with my credit union that has me at 7.99% instead
10:25
Those three things, you do those three things, you're an awfully long way towards getting a good deal
10:30
Makes sense to me. Yeah, arm yourself with info at all times, which we can help do with CarEdge.com
10:35
Zach Shefska, thanks so much for joining us. We appreciate it. Appreciate it, Jeff
10:39
All right. Well, the city's crackdown on illegally obscured license plates begins today
10:43
The rules aim to prevent drivers from covering up their plates to evade traffic laws and tolls
10:48
The rules do have one common theme. Any obstruction to a license plate, whether it's dirt, rust, plastic coverings
10:54
or any other material that makes the plate unreadable is prohibited. The NYC Transportation Department announcing those new rules back in January
11:01
All right, let's take one last look outside. Nick, you said it. It feels more like March today
11:05
I think people are sort of coming to the end of their rope with these cool temps. I know, right
11:09
We're just waiting for spring to really finally explode around here. We're going to see a nice increase in temperature, Steve, over the next couple of days
11:15
and some pretty decent weather along with that. So a bit of cloud cover still out there now
11:20
You can sort of see that. But if you go off to the west here, you can see the clearing trend is definitely found
11:24
So we'll be seeing that clearing trend come in overnight. tonight. Watch that here on our future cast still gonna be a bit breezy, though, and a little chilly 30s for most areas in upper 30 about 40 in the city tomorrow. Beautiful day sunny still a bit breezy. We'll see temperatures respond back to just above 60. And oh, here comes this warm front that's moving along. We'll bring some clouds with it on Friday. But that's also going to allow temperatures to warm up even more. Again, 40 in the city tonight as we clear it out against some areas of frost in parts of the area away from town, of course. So keep that in mind as temperatures in those colder spots dip to the low 30. Sunny breezy at times tomorrow
11:56
61. Average high is 62. So, you know, we're back in the ball game
12:01
A lot of clouds come in Friday, 64. Look at Saturday, 79
12:04
Clouds give way to sun. And on Sunday, not bad. Again, oops, Easter Sunday should be on that
12:09
That's the next day over. 73 on Sunday. Monday, 63. Showers may come in Monday night into Tuesday morning
12:15
And then we'll be drying out in time for Wednesday. Nice. You bumped up the weekend temps
12:19
We will take that for sure after this, no doubt. All right, thanks, Nick. That does it for your news block right now
12:24
