Pope Francis' funeral arrangements announced by the Vatican. What we know about the final farewell to the pontiff before the conclave gets underway
0:14
Good afternoon, everybody. I'm Linda Schmidt. Welcome to the News Block. We're going to take a live look at the Vatican right now
0:19
where faithfuls are flocking to pay tribute to the pontiff. Francis is in a private viewing right now for Vatican residents and the papal household
0:27
Tomorrow, he is going to be transferred to Lyon State at St. Peter's Basilica
0:33
We have live team coverage for you on this story today. Lisa Evers is live in Midtown outside St. Patrick's Cathedral
0:39
But first, we head to our Sharon Crowley with the very latest details on the funeral arrangements for the Holy Father
0:47
Sharon. That's right, Linda. Pope Francis' funeral will take place in St. Peter's Square at 10 o'clock in the morning Saturday, which is 4 o'clock in the morning our time
0:55
But the public viewing will get going underway tomorrow. Now, these pictures show Pope Francis wearing a simple white cassock and red vestments
1:06
The humble pope is also in a simple wooden casket that he wanted
1:11
Other popes have been laid in casket lined with plush cushions. Now, cardinals met for the first time on Tuesday in the Vatican to begin the early steps for getting to know one another
1:21
and planning the steps for the conclave to select the next pope. Archbishop Timothy Cardinal Dolan says he missed the first meeting
1:29
but he is flying to Rome this evening ahead of the beginning of the conclave
1:33
Cardinal Dolan spoke briefly about what the Catholic Church needs in its next leader
1:39
Every pope keeps the same thing because his sacred responsibility is to preserve the integrity of the faith
1:47
And Francis did that well. The way, the style that he does it can differ
1:53
and we've just seen a pro in Pope Francis. He had a winsome style that moved the world
2:01
And so whoever the new pope will be, we have to make sure that he has that same winning style
2:09
that Pope Francis did. And as we said, the cardinal heading out to Rome to the Vatican
2:16
this evening. Now, the process to choose a new pope takes place between 15 and 20 days
2:20
after the pontiff's death. And again, the funeral is set for Saturday, 10 a.m. Vatican City time
2:27
Linda. All right, Sharon, thanks so much. St. Patrick's Cathedral holding a mass for Pope
2:33
Francis today. The service is drawing, obviously, people of all religious beliefs to honor the late
2:38
pontiff. Fox 5's Lisa Evers is live right now for us in Midtown. Lisa. Well, Linda, St. Patrick's
2:45
Cathedral has become the focal point for New Yorkers to mourn the loss and honor the legacy
2:49
of Pope Francis. This afternoon, Timothy Cardinal Dolan led a service for New Yorkers from all over
2:56
to pay tribute to the pontiff who meant so much to so many. Now, St. Patrick's Cathedral was packed
3:02
with the faithful So many people showed up for the noon mass celebrated by Cardinal Dolan that the ushers and security allowed the overflow worshipers to stand in the aisles Cardinal Dolan spoke of the humility and the example of faith set by Pope Francis and how
3:16
they had forged a working friendship over the years. Here's what those who attended the special mass in his honor told us
3:23
It was beautiful. I said it was very nice to celebrate here at St. Patrick's the life of the Pope
3:29
I grew up Catholic, but I'm not practicing anymore. just a voice of peace in the world
3:34
More approachable, more inclusive. Not that that's going to be every pope's thing
3:39
but it was Francis' thing, the thing that touched me about his commonality with a normal person
3:48
And as Cardinal Dolan said during Mass, he is a unifying figure
3:52
And he is just in our country, but all over the world. Now, after the Mass, Cardinal Dolan spoke with a small group of reporters
4:01
He told us that later today he'll be traveling to Vatican City for Pope Francis' funeral
4:06
and also to be part of that conclave that will select his successor
4:10
We're live at St. Patrick's Cathedral. I'm Lisa Evers, Fox 5 News. Linda, back to you
4:15
All right, Lisa, thanks so much. And our coverage of the death of Pope Francis continues right here on Fox Local

I'll be on the field. You're going to be there? Is that the football guy? Can you give me a minute
4:33
Thanks. So, do you have any plans on Saturday? I was thinking..
4:38

5:07
Jury selection concluded with a jury of seven women and five men. Five alternates were also chosen Monday, with a sixth chosen today
5:15
Now, Weinstein is being tried again on rape and sexual assault charges
5:18
after New York's highest court overturned his 2020 conviction last year. The Anti-Defamation League says the number of anti-Semitic incidents in the United States
5:28
reached a record high last year. The group releasing its report on anti-Semitism today
5:34
Now, in 2024, there were more than 9,300 incidents across the U.S. This is a 5 percent increase from
5:42
2023 and a 344 percent increase over the past five years. It is the highest on record since the ADL
5:51
began tracking anti-Semitic incidents 46 years ago. And a solemn ceremony today for NYPD Detective Jonathan Diller
6:01
A memorial plaque was unveiled at the 116th Precinct in Rosedale, Queens
6:06
Diller was shot and killed during a traffic stop last year, but despite being wounded
6:10
he managed to get the gun out of the hands of the suspect to protect the rest of his team Today his widow spoke at the dedication And I hope when you see all these beautiful memorials of him that you remember that camaraderie
6:25
You remember to support each other, to make each other laugh, to have each other's backs
6:31
you know, make work enjoyable. Say I love you to each other
6:36
Detective Diller was just 31 years old, leaving behind his young wife, who you just saw speaking, and his young son
6:43
The federal government issuing a new ultimatum and deadline to New York officials after they ignored Sunday's deadline to kill congestion pricing
6:53
In a letter, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy issued a stern warning once again to Governor Hochul
6:59
threatening to pull federal funding for construction projects across the city and the state
7:04
In the letter, Duffy writes that New York leaders now have until May 21st to show the federal government why the Federal Highway Administration should not take action to force compliance
7:17
And a new Siena College poll shows more New Yorkers view Kathy Hochul favorably
7:23
44 percent of people view her positively, while 43 percent, they are not fans
7:28
A spokesperson for the polling group told the New York Post this time is, by the way, is the first time since January 2024 that Hochul had a positive favorability rating
7:39
Despite this, only 39 percent of voters said that they would vote for her again
7:45
And developing news right now, Health and Human Services Secretary RFK Jr. is expected to announce a plan to remove artificial dyes from food
7:54
That announcement is expected today at four o'clock. The federal ban will target eight petroleum-based dyes, removing them from the nation's food supply
8:04
RFK Jr. has vowed to remove artificial ingredients from foods. And on this Earth Day, the New York City Department of Transportation is launching its first delivery micro-hub on the Upper West Side
8:17
The locations are a central spot that allow trucks to unload items and transfer them to smaller vehicles like bikes and hand carts
8:26
The transportation commissioner says this will alleviate double parking in the city
8:31
Hopefully he's right about that. And the hands-off points are operating at West 73rd, West 77th, and West 85th
8:40
Well, obviously we're months away from Christmas, but the Radio City Rockettes are holding auditions today
8:47
More than 1,000 dancers from around the world lined up at Radio City Music Hall for their chance to make the famed dance team
8:55
You know, a former Rockette and a current choreographer told us what it takes to make the team
9:01
You have to have a really high tolerance in athletic, strong. They do strength training
9:08
They do aerobic training. They do dance training. So all of those things encompass being a great Rockette
9:14
These women are in amazing, amazing shape. All right. Now this year marks its 100th anniversary And of course best of luck to all those dancers All right we going to take a live look right now outside It could not be a more beautiful day
9:29
We're going to bring in Liv Johnson right now for a look at the forecast. And, Liv, I was walking to work just a little while ago
9:34
Everybody is smiling outside today, including me. I just took a lap around the block a few times because, I mean, yeah, just gorgeous out there
9:43
Look at these temperature differences from 24 hours ago. We're 25 degrees warmer than we were this time yesterday, and most of us pushing close to 30
9:52
Belmore is 29 degrees warmer. Newark is 30 degrees warmer. That puts us at summer-like temperatures
9:57
80 degrees is the current temperature in New York. Yes, it's cooler out on Long Island, but still above average for this time of year
10:03
We're looking at 70 degrees over ice. We have 77 for Hartford, 78 up in the Hudson Valley, almost mid-80s for places in New Jersey like Newark where it's 83 degrees
10:13
So to put that into perspective, usually we're just in the low to mid 60s as our average high for this time of year
10:19
We're not very far off from the record of 86 degrees, which was set in 2001
10:25
Now we're getting this land breeze. We're also getting a southerly wind. So we have some warm air and that's helping us feel a bit warmer
10:31
Right now, consistent winds means between 5 to 15 miles per hour. Some of us have some stronger gusts as well between 20 to 30 miles per hour
10:39
It's a pretty breezy afternoon, but at least it's warm air that we're dealing with
10:44
So on our satellite radar, as you saw in our live picture, and hopefully as you've seen, if you've spent some time outside today, we're looking at very nice clear skies
10:51
We had some overnight rain really late last night into very early this morning
10:56
but now we're dry for quite some time. Now we do have a cold front that's just moved through, so the next few days are a bit cooler
11:03
but at least we have this area of high pressure that's going to really keep us dry through the end of the week
11:09
So Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, most of Friday is going to be clear skies, lots of sunshine and dry conditions
11:17
The next time we have a chance of rain, it's going to be really late Friday into Saturday morning
11:21
Hopefully most of our Saturday will stay dry. We'll get a better idea as the models come together over the next few days
11:27
But right now, dry except late Friday into Saturday morning. Lows tonight, pretty mild, 53 degrees for New York City, 50 out on Long Island
11:35
We're looking at 47 for Hartford, 44 for Poughkeepsie. And then our highs tomorrow
11:40
You know, we are cooling down. Like I said, the cold fronts move through, but still nice, still above average
11:45
We're looking at temperatures in the mid-70s, 74 for New York, mid-60s out in Long Island
11:50
and low 70s up in the Hudson Valley. We really stay there for the next few days
11:55
Highs just in the mid to low 70s. Again, sunshine all the way through until Friday night where we have a chance of some
12:01
rain coming through late at night into Saturday morning. and then staying in the upper 60s
12:07
All right, Liv, thanks. I call that a pretty good week. Yes. Thanks so much
12:11
