Newark is home to a large Catholic population. The Archbishop of Newark, Joseph Cardinal Tobin, actually took part in the conclave

And Fox Eye's Stephanie Bertini joins us live from the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart

Stephanie, how are people and your family, your big Italian family, reacting to this news

Natasha, Steve, just after the new Pope was announced to the world, you could hear the bells ringing outside of the cathedral here in Newark

Of course, we made history today. Pope Leo XIV is the very first American pope making history for the United States, for the world, and of course, for Catholics here in the U.S. and beyond

Now, I talked to some people here in Newark, Catholics who came by the cathedral right after the news, and a lot of people happy, a lot of people surprised. Here's some of what they said

I've been talking to them on the phone, on FaceTime, and getting updates

Just overjoyed over there in Italy. So much joy today. And we heard right there in St. Peter's Square the chanting, Viva y Papa

The translation is, Long live the Pope. You know, my aunt, she specifically said congratulations to you, to the team, to the United States

because we now have an American Pope. Of course, we know he's also a Peruvian citizen, as we've been reporting

And of course, 69 years old, he could be around for a long time

His message today, one of unity. a lot of people resonating with that from Newark across the world. And of course

my family in Italy also said that was an important message. A lot of belief that he will sort of
