New oversized garbage bins to prevent rats

along their streets. They put these in today. There were regular dumpsters here before

and when those regular dumpsters went in, the rats went down. The new oversized European-style

bins are part of the citywide effort to reduce rats and look very familiar to those visiting

a problem keeping rats out, and in fact, they won't have a problem keeping people out either

because, as you can see, these doors are locked, and the only way to get into them, it takes a special device

DSNY says their pilot program getting trash into bins and off-city streets

reduced reported rat sightings by 60%, and these bins are expected to improve those results
