Date set for conclave to elect next pope: Vatican

A couple of minutes ago we were discussing the movie The Conclave

There's breaking news out of the Vatican. They just announced that a conclave to elect the successor to Pope Francis will start on Wednesday, May 7th

That's next week. Meanwhile, the Sistine Chapel is now closed to the public

Eligible members of the Catholic Church's College of Cardinals are now gathered to begin the secretive process next week

Now, the goal of the centuries-old tradition is to protect the vote from outside interference

It ends once a successor has been chosen. They need a two-third majority vote

Once they have that, it will be signaled by a plume of white smoke rising from the chapel chimney

Well, the Catholic faithful are now visiting the tomb of Pope Francis

The visit started early yesterday morning, a day after his funeral. The white tomb sits in St. Mary Major Basilica in Rome

A replica of the late pontiff pectoral cross is on the wall above it Visitors say how much this means to them So being able to see the Pope in his tombstone today it was really beautiful I thought it was amazing that he

wanted to be buried here in this basilica. Out of all of the ones, he chose this one. So I thought

that was really amazing. It's really humbling to be able to be here considering I'm from California

So yes, it was very amazing to be here. It's a big difference because most popes are

entombed inside St. Peter's Cathedral there in Vatican City, and he wanted to be where more

common folks were. And so that's why a lot of people are honored to be able to walk by the tomb

which opened on the second of nine days of the official mourning period for the Catholic Church

Yeah, and also that single coffin as well, rather than the trio. Right, exactly
