Appeal trial over 2020 teacher's beheading opens in France
Jan 26, 2026
An appeal trial opened in Paris on Monday for four men convicted over the 2020 beheading of schoolteacher Samuel Paty, which shocked France. Paty, 47, was murdered by an 18-year-old Islamist radical for showing cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed in class. His attacker, Abdoullakh Anzorov, was killed in a police shootout. In December 2024, eight individuals were found guilty of fostering the climate of hatred leading to Paty’s death. Our journalist Claire Paccalin has the latest from the Paris court.
