In Iran, students staged anti-government protests at several universities in the capital, Tehran.These were the first major rallies since last month’s brutal crackdown by the authorities, which reportedly left thousands dead. The unrest initially broke out in December over a severe economic crisis and the collapse of the Iranian currency, before escalating into mass anti-government demonstrations. The crackdown prompted the United States president to threaten military intervention, although the focus of those threats later shifted to Iran’s nuclear programme. Nick Rushworth has more.
