Hello, I'm Dwight Norris of Fishing at Work
0:04
And today we're going to talk about what I said I was going to do, but I've chosen not to
0:10
And that is to purchase an inflatable fishing kayak. Now you're probably wondering why I said and boasted about getting an inflatable fishing kayak
0:21
so I can go out in the water because it's hot weather and the fish are going deeper, which is
0:26
a reality and having the wearer fall to think that I could get everything going and
0:33
pumped up and out there and having a good fishing time and getting back in time and
0:38
it kind of seems a little you know far-fetched for say and you know what if you
0:45
were thinking that you were right I was pushing the limits I had to test it I had
0:51
to and didn't really test it but I went through the theory and did my research and
0:56
looked at what people that I knew were doing it and how long it took them to do things and all the
1:01
other things I was totally not thinking about to actually get this done and it
1:07
just reduces the level of enjoyment of fishing down to what I believe is that's
1:15
too low now there are different types of inflatable cash you can get big ones
1:21
small ones there are single persons there are two-person ones for tall
1:26
me, there are hard show ones, there's a mirage, but right now I'm focusing on the
1:33
applicable ones. Every boat has a possibility of being used, but in my current
1:38
situation I commute to work either by a bus or a bike and then I work in the city
1:46
like an actual you know, there's skyscrapers and stuff and there's a few blocks
1:51
from there, there's a river full of fish and it's only it only takes
1:56
10 minutes to get there. So thinking about that, there's a reality that they say, and in practice
2:06
it takes about five minutes to pump up an inflatable kayak, which is fantastic. Theoretically
2:12
that will leave you in my current situation about 25 and 30 minutes of fishing. But there were so
2:20
many other things to think about, which I'll be describing more so on my
2:26
that process go fishing at work in an extra section and I'm actually thinking about
2:31
doing a video series of those that go into death this being one of those things
2:36
that I'll need to go into death about when you can use a boat when you go fishing at
2:42
work depending on a situation obviously it's easier if you have a car it's easier if you
2:46
can lock up a boat of some sort or if we can roll one out on your own given time
2:51
with maybe electric and you have all your stuff together and you don't have to
2:56
around. So I actually made a list of things all those work about why this is a
3:06
problem. So first of all, self-bailing. I was looking at and I was like self-bailing
3:15
I was like, why would you put a self-bailing kayak? And I was like, oh yes, if you're
3:22
going to do all the work of rowing with a paddle, You're going to need drip rings to make sure the water doesn't roll down your arms and get you wet
3:33
So that goes into another thought. Hmm. I have to wear, I have to switch into clothing
3:39
That's a whole different subject. And I'm going to get wet. There's that problem
3:44
Also, there might be water that gets inside of your inflatable kayak and then you're sitting in it
3:50
Also, not fun. Maybe you should wear some trunks when you go fishing
3:56
Hmm, seems like more time. Then there's the fact that you're doing paddling instead of using a motor. That is an expenditure of energy that you don't want to actually do. Walking to a place or biking to a place is enough energy for most people and they want to make this whole fishing network thing really easy. So last thing you want to do is start sweating and then you finish
4:26
pushing and you still swaying What if it 90 degrees outside and you out in a hot blazing sun it hitting you from above It reflecting off the water and hitting you from below You get that nice double tanne everybody wants except you don want it right now
4:41
And you're sweating and you're nasty. And you start to stink. And then you have to think, oh God, I got to go back to work
4:47
I got to get this thing, you know, broken down, put my backpack, it weighs like 40 pounds
4:53
Crazy. And I'm expected not to stink. You know, they have to look into other features, you know, give some handiwipes or something
5:01
I'll find a shower somewhere. More time, more time, more time, more effort, more money
5:08
Not good for us. So that was one problem that does gove into many other problems
5:15
That I just as an culmination came to a blatant no to all of this
5:23
I'll go through all of them just to be complete. Next one is, yes, the pre and post prep time
5:35
So let's go through the step by step. So you have it in a playable kayak. Great
5:41
What you need if you say you're walking or biking or taking a bus or some of the mode of transportation
5:48
that isn't your own vehicle that you own like a car or a truck or whatever like that
5:55
can just throw in it in the back seat. So you have to think about it. It's usually an
6:00
inflatable kayak one to two persons. It's in a way between 30 and 40 pounds and it
6:09
may be put in a certain way like a Cevlar slash Coleman Colorado to one or two
6:16
person kayak. The head those are nice. You can wear them as backpacks but it's still
6:22
30 to 40 pounds on your back and it's kind of of unwieldy and you might be carrying something else like a briefcase or
6:28
or your gym clothes or whatever else you want to do some other day but obviously
6:33
that day you're gonna go fishing so you're probably not gonna use gym clothes and then they you can also use as a handbag so it's this weighty and you if you're
6:42
trying to be discreet that's a problem and then you think about all the other
6:47
things you need to bring with it you have you to paddle because you're
6:51
obviously not gonna bring a marine battery and a men coda 40 pounds
6:55
thrust troll and motor with you. Probably not the most discreet thing to do unless you're
7:01
going to lock it up outside, which is not an advisable thing to do in the city. Maybe where you are
7:07
it's a possibility. But for me, no. So there's that. And then you have to think about, oh, wait
7:15
I can't go there in my dress clothes. Maybe I'm wearing a suit. Maybe I'm wearing some khaki pants
7:20
in a college shirt. Don't want to get that wet. Can't trust those drip rings on the, on the
7:25
those paddles. Not good. So, okay, maybe I can change into my clothes when I leave in the
7:32
bathroom in about three minutes. I can pop on a nice pair of swim trunks and a shirt and boom
7:37
I'm out there. And if anybody asks, I can tell them the truth, I'm going fishing, or are you
7:42
not telling the truth and tell them going for a swim at the Y? I don't know. You can come up
7:47
your own solution or you can ask me and we can, you know, come up with a good solution to your
7:54
problem and besides clothing trying to remember this off the top of my head you have
8:02
your fishing gear what you have in your nice little backpack lures rod and reel
8:08
and you know the basics for what you want to fish that day as I said before you
8:12
probably want to choose something specific want to fish with worms want to fish
8:16
with a spinner bait I want to fish with a grub etc etc
8:20
choose something for where you're going to fish and how you're going to fish it so
8:24
you're probably going to use a boat, you're going to go to deeper water, and you want to
8:28
fish a Carolina rig or just put on maybe a nice little live worm or some other live bait
8:36
That's cool. And you have to prepare for that as well. And then you have to get all this stuff and take it to the river, a lake, or wherever it's near you
8:46
For me, you know, that's 10-minute walk of all that stuff with me. Multiple bags
8:51
One not easy to do If it hot weather it gonna make me sweat If there people around they like what the heck is Dwight doing With two bags It looks like he carrying around an army pack It been listed Anyway that not a good either So that the pretty part and you get there and you have to
9:14
roll it all out, get it all prepped, you have to pump it up. You have, oh yeah, you have the pump with you
9:20
A two-way action pump. They're usually very light, but they're usually large. I'm talking like one to two feet
9:27
across and it's like a one or two foot square box generally that's the space that's
9:33
pretty big you know that's the width of your your backpack you know not easy to hide that's
9:38
something else you have to take with you oh it's the worst I thought um then you have to bump
9:45
it up then you have to get all your stuff together then you have to make sure your clothes are
9:49
and right and you have to um put that all into the bag the stuff that you aren't using your
9:55
good clothes you know keeping fold Polded permanent pressed and put them in the dry bag and everything you need and go out fishing and then probably by that time you've wasted a number 10 the 15 minutes on top of that leaving with less than 20 minutes to go fishing which is not optimal and then when you take those 15 and 20 minutes you come back you're like crap
10:20
Here we go again pull out the pump deflate the available kayak
10:26
find some random tree to hide behind or maybe you're lucky and there's a
10:30
porta potty there and or a restaurant facility and you can change it back into your
10:36
dress clothes or do that when you go back to office depending on what kind of job
10:40
you're you're working in and get all your your stuff packed up into those
10:46
bags again and drag them back to work filling one tired frustrated maybe
10:54
you caught some fish that's good you did with you said you're going to do you went fishing on a water with a boat but you only had a very small
11:02
amount of time and it just wasn't worth all the effort so that's a reason why i'm starting to think
11:13
that maybe i shouldn't go through all of these but i'll speed it up so there's the weight
11:18
i talked about the weight it's a 30 or 40 pound bag back and forth not good
11:26
the size, it's gangly, it's like a rectangular shape, it's wider than your body, it doesn't look like a backpack, it can't be discrete, almost, even the several that's built like a backpack isn't that discrete
11:42
Only real discreet thing I can find is a fishing backpack, like the one made by spider wire, and it has four nice little medium-sized Plano style boxes on the bottom, on the top, it has no like a nice little foiled
11:56
refrigerated section where you can put your lunch and you can do your shoreline
12:00
fishing no problem and as far as anyone else knows you just have a backpack
12:07
then there's all the accessories I was talking about the pump the paddles
12:12
the fishing gear your extra clothes so you can you can go in there and uh
12:21
your dry bag and hopefully don't want to bring anything else like I'm in code of trawling motor where a hummingbird radar
12:30
Mm-mm-mm, I'll leave that for the weekend. I talked about changing clothes
12:36
And I also talked about less time fishing. Obviously, this is horrible, and I'm sorry for stoking your interest
12:47
about using an inflatable kayak in my situation. But let's talk about the situations where this is possible
12:55
possible. And the fact is the other situations you probably don't even need to use an inflatable
13:01
kayak, which means you can save time inflating, unless you own like a very small car. But let's say
13:09
first and foremost, you own the car and you go to work. You can put a kayak, a hard shell
13:15
you can put a soft, a inflatable kayak inside of it, or better yet, you can put your hard bottom boat
13:22
a John boat, a regular boat, whatever thing, whatever like floats and just lock it to a tree for the day
13:29
You know, use a very good lock. Maybe get some nice permission at the lake to put it on their property Maybe talk to the local the boat house to say hey can I lock my boat up at your boat house on this lake or this river
13:44
I actually did that today at the Charles River Community Boating Center and they told me not possible, but they run their own business there
13:53
They rent their stuff out, only their stuff in there. They don't let any other boats park there, but you know, it's worth a try
14:00
I try. So if you're going to rent their canoes, even though they don't open up to 1 or 3 p.m
14:08
based on what time it's season is. Not very optimal for lunchtime fishing, but it's after lunch
14:14
But it's still an option. Not everybody has that option. So the car is definitely the most functional thing if you want to get out in the boat
14:23
because you can take it with you in the car, on top of the car
14:27
behind the car, or at the lake itself. And if you're somewhere where you can actually
14:34
keep a boat at the place you're going to fish and let's lock it up. That could be anywhere. If I had to lock up my boat to a tree, since it's where I currently work and fish at is a state park, technically, I can't have anything locked up to a tree because one, it'll be vandalized, and two, the park rangers will unlock it and put it into their truck and take it home
15:04
I'm pretty sure they don't donate it or destroy it. They're not really into wasting a good product
15:12
More likely they'll find a good home somewhere else. That's not me
15:16
Once I have it registered with the state, or it's big enough to be registered with the state
15:20
and then they'll contact me, maybe pay a fine. It didn't tell me to pick it up
15:24
Either way, they're going to make some money. What other way would be good
15:32
Yes, I think those are only two ways. The boat either needs to be on your vehicle or it needs to be at the location
15:43
That's what this has to happen if you want to use a boat. So whether you choose an inflatable canoe or you want to go out and see, you know
15:54
inflatable sea kayak or you just want to do your local river, you can get a John boat, or
16:00
you can get something even cooler, which is called a port-a-boat, which is a full
16:04
building boat and it's been around for a long time. It's really cool. It has sizes
16:11
between 8 and 14. It's C rated. People use it all time. It holds up to a side of a surfboard
16:18
That's tied to your roof. And people think you're a servant probably. Not fishing. Or you just leave it in a trailer that you make yourself
16:26
But maybe you're really cool and you actually own a boat and you actually work near where your boat is
16:33
and you can go to your boat and take it out fishing or just cruising you know have a
16:40
nice little lunchtime cruise I even take some friends out with you yes make it a
16:46
social event so that's basically why I have to say about getting in a playable
16:55
fishing kayak and how I'm not gonna be able to do that in my current situation
17:00
because where I currently work doesn't allow me to keep my boat in the water because the land is owned by the state
17:11
I also don't drive my car to work because it's a city and parking per day is like $30 and per month is like $300 and that's just not worth it and honestly I don't like driving in the city
17:25
It's very fresh to me. So you have the same problem I do
17:30
You can think about getting a kayak or something like that or maybe renting one of the one from the local facilities
17:38
There probably is a rental place nearby hopefully have better hours than I do and if not hopefully don't work in a city and you're able to use your own
17:47
fishing boats hopefully have boats more than one is better and you can discount in the water whatever you want to even if you didn't even think about it now I'm telling you to think about it
17:59
get in your boat and go fishing so it's Dwight Norris Fishing Network hoping that you can get on your
18:06
boat somewhere somehow hopefully at lunchtime and go fishing
