Hello! Today we're going to talk about the best way to catch a fish in the river. Stay tuned
0:20
So, the best reason or way to catch a fish in the river is to really focus on
0:29
what's going on. I just accidentally clicked on a different type of view here so don't be dismayed
0:38
There are different things going on in each river that you're looking at, particularly mine here
0:44
in Boston. And you have to remember that the fish act a certain way in rivers instead of in a lake
0:53
or pond or something where the water is stagnant. The water is always flowing at different rates of
1:00
speed depending on if the river is skinny or if it's wide. And also each river has its own speed
1:09
and water clarity as well and what's in the water and how much structure it has on it. But
1:16
But the most important thing to think about is how are fish going to get out of the current
1:25
There is almost no fish that likes to sit in a current and work its butt off just to stay where it is
1:33
It's a fruitless activity. Would you stand in front of a wind machine that's blowing at you and try to fight it like this forever
1:43
No, that doesn't make any sense. Obviously you would go to the side of a building where the wind isn't blowing so you can get out
1:49
Kind of like when you're a blizzard. So the fish are doing the same thing in the river
1:53
So you have to think about this when you're looking for places to fish. So in the Charles River here, there are several places where that happens
2:02
The river is slower at certain points because there's, I believe, 10 plus dams which slow the water down and speed it up
2:13
and the last one is right here in Watertown and from there it actually
2:19
picks up speed as it goes down and slows down around curves and in the curves
2:24
there's structure as well where it slows down this is because of the cut
2:29
that the actual speed and direction of the river is going so you'll have deep
2:36
cuts kind of dug into the river and these are places where fish will
2:42
congregate where they can take a rest they can find a spot to ambush bait or
2:49
they can go up to our spotting grounds like the herring do every year. So let's
2:54
look a little closer at these locations because a lot of people want to hear you
3:02
know things about oh what's the best lure what's the best technique what's the
3:08
best rig but sometimes it's as simple as knowing where the fish will be most of
3:16
the time and with majority of fish on river you want to find the best way to
3:21
catch fish on the river you have to know where the fish are first then you can make your presentation your presentation with the rig, your live bait, the way
3:29
you position your boat, how quiet you are, you worry about things about water
3:34
clarity and how much sun is hitting it or what kind of bait fish are around the
3:39
area what's the local forage etc etc but if you don't know where the fish are all
3:45
that doesn't matter because if you can't find the fish you can't do anything to
3:50
make them bite to make them take action so first find the fish that's what we're
3:58
gonna do here. So I'll keep it at the speed for a little bit. So right here is the dam
4:13
It picks up speed rapidly because it's skinny here and as soon as it opens up it
4:19
picks up it slows down speed. So there's a lot of fish that do not like to hang
4:25
around here and if they do they hang on structure overhanging trees, logs, rocks
4:32
around the corner and any of the bins. This is one of the first major bins. Doesn't
4:41
look like much of a bin but it's enough to actually slow the water down here and
4:46
you'll find plenty of fish sitting here. Why? Well it's something you can't see and
4:53
guess what it is? it's lots and lots of lily pads and lily pads don't like being
4:59
in a heavy current so you know if there's a mass of lily pads or overhanging
5:05
trees that haven been blown away from the current that where fish are there are tons of bass bluegill perch that lined up along these weed beds They hide in here They spawn in here
5:18
And the other fish is roaming the shoreline here right on the edge, waiting for one foolish fish
5:25
to pop out, and they snatch it up. And if you're in a boat, that's exactly where you want to make
5:30
your presentation with your lure. And if you're even if you have some topware lures those could
5:36
work well if they're more or less weightless like a frog. You can work it right along this last
5:42
inner edge here. Just hit but a nice crankbait or a spinnerbait along this edge is fantastic
5:51
And if you just want to catch some smaller fish with your children if you're fishing with them
5:55
cool little beetle spinner no I'm talking about it's like a about two
6:01
inches long has a little spinner on top you can even use it about the spinner or
6:04
like a crappy jig or just a white curly tail grub and it's worked out along the
6:09
shoreline and in most places that have features like this you're going to be
6:14
catching some fish real quick but you can work it from the shoreline as well
6:18
there are places usually where you can get access to the water like right here
6:24
and there's probably holes in here somewhere you can actually hit the inside and but not so much the
6:31
outside which isn't very cool but further down you can get to those areas but you see here the
6:35
the um the lily pad stopped and why is that because the curve is over this is a in the current again
6:43
not cool for fish fish don't want to be there so the next place you hit official will hang around
6:48
is right here and guess what the Yacht Club slows it down and the next thing you know you see lily
6:54
pads again so here's a key indicator this is obviously something to think about where the
7:00
water slows down there's growth there's plant growth either algae or lily pads or you'll see
7:09
that there's trees that have fallen in the water and they haven't blown away the current hasn't
7:14
taking them and that means the water is slower there and where the water is
7:17
slower there are fish there because fish don't like to work against the current
7:21
they like to relax and wait for the fish to come to them that's a smart fish
7:28
save energy and eat easy you know looks more fantastic look next spot we got a
7:36
little curve here boom huge mass of lily pads all up in the boat ramps too
7:42
they probably should clean this up but no not for everybody. If you notice over here you would think
7:49
oh there's a little hole here and stuff. There's probably a piece of movement here but there
7:55
should be some fish here as well. You know why isn't there really pads there? That's because
7:59
water is moving right through here. It's found in exit path but it gets constricted which actually
8:04
speeds up the water here and pushes it through which doesn't allow much of this kind of growth
8:11
there's some overhaving trees you might find some fish here but not great so as you've seen here already the curves
8:20
are where you will find slower water on the uh we want to call this the back side of the curve is where the water is going to
8:29
slow down right there because this because it goes this way the uh just like you're driving like a race car or something like nascar
8:40
It's not able to carry the curve. It has to make an A-turn out with a nest curve
8:46
It has to go around the curve smooth. It has to cut off at the edge. But it's not able to cut back in because it would lose control and spin out
8:53
So it goes to the outside. The water here is going around the corner and going to the outside
8:59
Which means it's slower right here. Great place to try and look for fish
9:04
So you keep looking for places like that. Look at that. There's no growth here at all
9:08
at all it's going too fast this corner is constricted at the bridge now i also know that
9:14
there's a little bit of a hole here too because of the digging of the uh the the um the bridge
9:19
abutment but it's not curvy enough so it's not much growth this looks like growth i think it's
9:27
actually land here's the next curve where is it going to go it's the opposite therefore the slower
9:34
area is going to be right here. But the river is getting wider which means there's more water
9:39
movement and a little harder for the water to be stopped. But still this is a good spot right here
9:48
Actually I think... I'm going through some of those taps. Um yes I've got some fish over here
9:56
and a lot of people why do I not see a fish right here it's not a curve but behind this
10:06
is actually a little it's not a pond it's actually connected to the river these little
10:11
cutaways and it goes back to right about here and it about five feet of water and it usually covered in lily pads but it almost not moving at all And it a nice place to rest and it also definitely a spotting ground You can see the little kettle dents in it
10:32
And that's where your smaller fish that are being born and the small fry from bass or catfish or anything else will hang out so you don't get eaten by some other fish or even your own family
10:46
and I'll let you know there's even people like Greg Miner from a local fishing guide for the
10:56
Charles River he has it right on his videos right on the TV show that he was on for on the water
11:01
and he's fishing right under this thing and he catches like three bass right there just hitting
11:06
there and these are like you know two pounders they're obviously sitting under the bridge
11:09
waiting for an easy meal and hanging out in a slow area of the river taking a break
11:18
i see lots of people sit here and they'll cast out over here they'll cast over there
11:24
they'll cast right there and they'll catch jack because it's in the middle of the river it's
11:28
moving way too fast and you can see your your bait that's going to do do do do do do getting
11:33
taken down the river and you know maybe you'll get a passerby or maybe a striped
11:40
asser chasing out the herring and it's going crazy maybe you'll get a lone
11:44
catfish just hanging out looking sniffing around for something smelly but other
11:49
than that it's gonna be hard hard to catch anything and a lot of people just
11:53
think there's no fishing here or the fishing's not good or fishing's bad but
11:58
more or less they don't know exactly the best way to catch a fish on a river
12:05
which is what we're talking about now so I want to spend too much time you know
12:09
here there are some cool things like this is a it's like a u-turn right here
12:16
this whole area is pretty awesome and the closer you get to the ocean the less it's
12:25
going to be but there's some cool things like the Storal Lagoon. It's a little
12:30
pathway here and this is actually a park that's run by Boston and that little
12:36
community rowing place. We can get a boat or you can learn how to sail and this is
12:43
all protective from the river flow. It slows down to a halt. It kind of tries to
12:50
blow in here and right to the edge there's some nice lily pads here and
12:56
there's some really good fishing right here on these edges and over here you'll
13:05
see me in my previous videos spending a lot of time in this corner and in this
13:12
corner there's lots of rocks there's lots of overhanging trees there's logs in the
13:19
water. There's lily pads. There's places to hide for the small fish. There's places to ambush for
13:23
the big fish. There's a blowhole here to the main river where the fish will come in and out as they
13:28
please to go to deeper water if it gets too hot during the summer. There's just lots of movement
13:33
of fish and bait fish and it's fantastic. It's a great place to be. And as you can see there's growth
13:40
There's stuff all the way through here but those pots back there are better than around here
13:46
Another good spot is right here. There's lots of, um, what's this called? These docks. And around and under these is great. It's kind of shallow. I'm talking like four feet or less. But there's this fish just hanging out here, taking a break. And, you know, the other side of the river has other things too. There's lots of bridges going over the water. There's lots of pilings, lots of places to hide, lots of places to tuck away, and lots of places to ambush fish that are going around
14:16
Here's the Florida C. It's really deep here for, I mean, it's like 15 feet, which is pretty ridiculous for this little alleyway right here
14:25
But, tomorrow or some other day, I'm going to go here. It's iced over right now. Hopefully not so much
14:33
I'm going to get something a little sharp, a little poking, bang the ice, and see if I can't make a hole right here or along this lower section where I can actually reach the water
14:42
because the ramp actually goes up as you go out here it's like you can see it's a little taller
14:47
right there it's it's like 10 feet down but here it's like two or three and right here it's like an
14:54
inch and I can get on the water and I can sit somewhere safe and do some ice fishing which is
14:59
the I think it's the best way to go ice fishing if the if you know the fish are right below you
15:03
because you don't have to worry about falling to the ice you don't have to worry about how
15:07
So if you take the ices, you don't have to dig that much. And you have something strong and supportive to do it on
15:13
And you can easily get out of the water. You don't have to be in the middle and say
15:17
oh man, I have to get the ice picks in case I need to drag myself out. I can bring all the kind of gear
15:22
I have to get the tent. I have to get the super auger. I have to get the special flaggy things all over the place No you can just get a couple spots right around the same area and get your ice fishing done So let get out of here This is down where I used to live
15:37
I actually lived right around here somewhere when I grew up here as a kid and I knew that
15:43
the fishing was fantastic. This is the Rappahannock. It's a really muddy river and there's lots
15:47
of catfish there and some bass as well. It goes right up to like Fredericksburg. You
15:52
You know, there's a place like Stafford and this Quantico Marine Base. If you've heard of that, and there's D.C. right here
15:59
You know, boom. And this is the Patonate River coming out of there. And this is the Chesapeake Bay, and we all know about the Chesapeake Bay
16:06
Fantastic fishing. And there's tons and tons of, like, rivers, bays, sounds, like, working their way into the Chesapeake Bay
16:16
York River, James River. This is even, like, a little cutaway. the Rappahannock and the Potomac. And there's even cool things like there's
16:27
Fishing Bay and Fishing Creek. So obviously you want to check those places
16:31
out. If they are known enough to be called Fishing Bay or Fishing Creek, try them out
16:38
But as you can see here, let's go... oh I know over there too well
16:44
to wrap a hammock here. A little further up. Just tap a hammock. You can even see from here
16:54
that the water is muddy. But there's these little flats here where the fish can take a break. They can roll up in here for a while
17:04
And it's not safe to go in there like walking but you can take a nice little flat bottom boat and get into that shallow water
17:12
and get access to those fish. And there's a bridge here. It's really wide, but there's lots of cutaways that aren't really marked
17:19
If you look closer, you can see all the access to slower water
17:24
Right here at Cat Point Creek. Let me guess. Hmm. There's catfish in this section
17:29
Lots of catfish. And this muddy water meanders back and forth, back and forth, back and forth
17:37
All the way to a bay. Hmm. Now look at this, there's a little corner right here where it swerves this way
17:48
Guess what? It cut out this section from the speed of the river
17:52
It got cut out and left this right here, which is Mulberry Island, which is all mudflats
18:03
Man, what could be up in here? I could only guess. You can get lost in this labyrinth of rivers and streams
18:14
I don't know how you can call this an island. And then, just roll out to the beach, you can get lost
18:20
Go west, get the beach right back out to have a hannock again
18:27
But as you can see, there's lots of places you can go on a river where the water slows down
18:36
tempted to go out in the middle and cast you know your line right down to this
18:41
deep water to see if there's something like a Loch Ness monster down there
18:45
ready to bite your your giant hunk of your can of worms or your your own
18:50
chicken liver or whatever you're trying to use for catfish you might catch a big
18:55
blue down there you might but that's a lot of water to cover stick to the places
19:02
where it's easier for the fish to save energy. Simple. That's all you need to think about
19:10
Once you get there, you can try all the cool stuff you have in your rod and all that, you know
19:16
all that stuff. Whatever you want to buy, whatever you want to use, whatever technique you have
19:21
but stick to places where the river slows down. Yeah, and that's pretty much all you need to know about the best way to catch a fish on
19:37
the rover. If you want to learn more, please go down below to the bottom
19:42
You'll see some nice playlists about different things, beach fishing, childhood fishing, fishing
