there's opposition among Republican
0:02
lawmakers to one of the benefits cuts
0:05
proposals for federal employees and it
0:07
may put it in jeopardy Here are the
0:09
details Hello everyone I'm Ian Smith
0:12
with fedsmith.com Thank you for joining
0:14
me wanted to bring you a quick video
0:16
update about um some interesting news
0:20
that could definitely impact the one of
0:24
the pension cut proposal or benefits
0:26
cuts proposals for federal employees
0:28
that's going on in the House right now
0:30
As you might recall Congressman Mike
0:32
Turner Republican from Ohio came out in
0:36
opposition to one of the proposed
0:38
benefits cuts for federal employees that
0:40
was put forth by the House Oversight
0:42
Committee and he brought this up when it
0:45
was being deliberated in the markup
0:48
session back on April 30th That's when
0:50
the committee was uh looking at all of
0:53
the the package of the proposed cuts and
0:56
they did ultimately advance all of them
0:58
out of the markup session that day But
1:00
Turner said during that hearing quote I
1:03
believe that making changes to pension
1:05
retirement benefits in the middle of
1:06
someone's employment is wrong changing
1:08
the rules especially once someone's
1:10
already in been in been invested is
1:13
wrong And he was referring to the
1:16
proposal that would increase the amount
1:18
that federal employees have to pay into
1:21
their retirement under FURs Um it would
1:24
bring it up to 4.4% for some federal
1:26
employees who are currently paying less
1:28
I'm not going to get into all the
1:30
details of that proposal or or the other
1:32
proposals that were included in in this
1:34
package of cuts of proposed cuts Um but
1:37
I will include links um in the
1:39
description to uh some other videos and
1:42
articles I've done about this if you'd
1:44
like more information But Turner came
1:46
out just this week and reiterated his
1:49
opposition to this particular proposal
1:51
He told the Dayton Daily News on
1:53
Thursday quote "It's a very basic
1:56
American principle that if you go to
1:57
work every day and earn benefits that
1:59
those earned benefits should not be
2:01
changed midame I believe it has to
2:04
change." And he also made it clear that
2:06
if this proposal were to remain in in
2:08
the final bill he would vote against it
2:11
on the House floor And remember this
2:13
legislation is still working its way
2:15
through the legislative process Um its
2:18
latest iteration was it went before the
2:22
House Budget Committee and as a matter
2:26
of fact that was held today the day I'm
2:28
recording this on May 16th And um this
2:32
is the bill that's being coined the big
2:34
beautiful bill and it failed to advance
2:36
out of that committee And the committee
2:39
is set to reconvene deliberations on
2:42
this coming Sunday at 10 p.m Quick aside
2:45
there are other Republicans who
2:47
apparently agree though with Turner Uh
2:50
one of them is Congressman Don Bacon a
2:52
Republican from Nebraska
2:54
He said in remarks on Thursday quote "We
2:57
should not be changing federal employee
2:59
pensions for those who are already
3:00
serving For new folks the change is fine
3:03
If you want to reduce employee pensions
3:06
for those already serving then you
3:07
better start with all of our
3:09
congressional pensions." Politico
3:11
reported that Bacon is hoping to modify
3:13
this proposal to prevent the ability to
3:15
make changes to the pensions of federal
3:17
employees who are currently in the
3:20
He also said that he's open to
3:22
negotiating for a threshold where
3:25
employees with five years of service or
3:27
less get included in the pension
3:30
reform Politico also reported that
3:33
according to Congressman Steven Lynch
3:36
Democrat from Massachusetts that there
3:38
could be approximately nine Republicans
3:41
who would vote along with Democrats in
3:43
opposing the pension plan in a House
3:46
floor vote The bottom line here is that
3:48
this particular proposal that would
3:50
raise pension contributions for some
3:52
federal employees appears to be in
3:54
jeopardy It's going to be interesting to
3:56
see what impact it has on the
3:58
legislation as a whole and and if this
4:01
proposal makes it into um final
4:04
legislation It sounds like there's
4:05
enough Republicans in opposition to it
4:08
that at a minimum this proposal is
4:11
probably going to change if not be
4:13
stripped from the over from the broader
4:16
budget bill as a whole Fedsmith.com will
