Hey ladies and gentlemen, this is Carmine Sabia for Explain America

And Merrick Garland just got put on the hot seat, folks. Before we get started, please make sure you like, comment, share, and subscribe

Those little things really help us out and they help our channel continue to grow
0:17
So Merrick Garland was confronted by reporters and they actually asked him some really tough
0:21
questions which shocked me. And Merrick, he was kind of dancing around
0:26
You know, consider this. This is a man who now serves as Attorney General, who is in charge of the Department
0:33
of Justice, that is prosecuting the man who passed him over for a seat on the Supreme Court
0:39
I'm not saying he's got any bitterness towards Trump, but I mean I think a lot of people
0:44
would if they were in Merrick Garland's position. So it's an interesting position to have him in
0:48
Garland, however, he always knows what to say to make it sound benign and like everything's
0:54
going normal and according to plan. I want you to listen to what he says and then we'll talk about it
1:00
You have an historical image of a former president of the United States
1:04
The defendant has been calling your prosecutors names, Republicans in Congress, some of them
1:10
have been talking about weaponization of the justice system. When did you find out the special counsel was headed down this track
1:16
And why did you choose not to stop him as was in your power
1:21
So as you know, I can't talk about the particulars of this or any other ongoing criminal matter
1:29
As I said when I appointed Mr. Smith, I did so because it underscores the Justice Department's
1:37
commitment to both independence and accountability. Mr. Smith is a veteran career prosecutor
1:46
He has assembled a group of experienced and talented prosecutors and agents who share
1:56
his commitment to integrity and the rule of law. Any questions about this matter will have to be answered by their filings in court
2:04
One quick follow up, Mr. Attorney General. Experts in extremism had feared there would be unrest in Miami this week
2:12
Some people are saying it's because the Justice Department has been so assertive in prosecuting
2:16
rioters on January 6th that we have not seen a repeat of that violence
2:20
Do you agree with that assessment? All I can say is we live in a democracy
2:25
These kind of matters are adjudicated through the judicial system. The Justice Department will be vigilant to ensure that there are no threats of violence
2:35
or actual violence. Can you give the American public a very clear sense of what exactly your role was in the
2:42
indictment process, just so people can understand what that role is? And then secondarily, given the historic and extraordinary nature of the case, explain
2:52
to people if you would, why this was the best and most appropriate step that was taken and
2:59
why there were no other alternatives? I'm trying to remember the first question. Exactly
3:06
Yes, so my role has been completely consistent with the regulations that set forth responsibilities
3:11
to the Attorney General under the special counsel regulations. And I followed those regulations
3:18
With respect to the second question, this again is asking for particulars and I'm not
3:22
going to be able to comment. All of the comments on this will have to come in filings in court
3:29
Now you notice Garland never says he didn't know that Trump was going to be prosecuted
3:33
He never says that. He was asked when he knew and he didn't answer that
3:38
He just kept praising Jack Smith. You know, Jack Smith, who has kind of a shady history when it comes to political donations
3:44
him and his family. But there it is. There's Merrick Garland's answers
3:49
I think that he could have and should have stepped in here to stop this prosecution
3:55
It's so, it just feels so politicized to so many people and I don't see it doing anything
4:00
other than causing great damage to our republic. I want to know what you guys think about what Garland said, so please let me know in the comments
4:08
Also, make sure you like, share and subscribe. That stuff really helps us out
