some really bad news from the Supreme Court of the United States, particularly from that
0:10
court's conservative majority. Folks, please make sure before we start the video that you like and you share and you subscribe

So Joe Biden is getting signals from the Supreme Court that they're prepared to strike down
0:39
his student loan debt forgiveness program. Now what he did was he used the HEROES Act, which is an act that is supposed to be used
0:49
in times of national emergency and it can postpone or cancel debt for the students
0:55
And what happened was during the COVID pandemic, both the administrations of Donald Trump
1:00
and Joe Biden kept postponing student loan payments. Now we don't know why he's still postponing student loan payments because everybody's
1:09
pretty much back to work. I don't know anybody who's out of work right now because of the COVID pandemic
1:14
So there doesn't seem to be a reason to keep postponing these, but he doesn't want to just
1:19
postpone them. He wants to cancel $10,000 in student debt for all borrowers across the board if they
1:26
make under $125,000 a year. But if they received a Pell Grant, meaning that they're low income, he will cancel up
1:34
to $20,000 of their student loan debt. It's a huge legislative giveaway
1:41
And when it was struck down last year by a judge, you know, the judge said the court is not blind to what's going on to the current political division in our country
1:49
And it's fundamental to the survival of our Republic that the separation of powers as
1:53
outlined in our constitution be preserved. And having interpreted the HEROES Act, the court holds it does not provide clear congressional
2:01
authorization for the program proposed by the secretary. All that means is they've overstepped
2:08
You have to go to Congress for something like this. You can't just use your executive pen in an emergency act and give away billions of dollars
2:17
you know. And so what a lot of people are saying is, well, then also what happens to the people
2:22
who already paid off their student loans? What happens to them? You just tell them tough luck, thanks for paying, get over it
2:29
It's a total unfair thing. And what it is, is it's buying votes
2:33
But unfortunately, the Republicans are in a catch 22 here. If the court strikes it down, Joe Biden marches in to the 2024 election, says you have to
2:43
elect me and you have to elect Democrats in the Senate and House so you can get student
2:48
loan forgiveness. And the Republicans, he's going to say they their court is the one that struck it down
2:53
Republican states are the ones who sued to stop this. Now, of course, the Republicans are being fiscally responsible
2:59
We understand that if you keep giving away money like this, you're going to crash the economy
3:03
You're going to cause more inflation. You're seeing the results of it now
3:07
But people don't get that. People see I'm going to get $10,000 taken off my debt
3:13
I'm going to get $20,000 taken off my debt. And that's all they see. And that actually will hurt us in elections
3:18
And we've seen it happen with the giveaway on the stimulus check, which also contributed
3:23
to inflation. So, you know, it's a catch 22 for Republicans right now
3:28
But it's the right thing for the country for this to be struck down. Guys, thank you again for joining us here at Explain America
