Hey ladies and gentlemen, this is Carmine Sabia for Explain America, and the Liberal
0:04
News Network, NBC and MSNBC have made a drastic change to the lineup that ends an absolute
0:11
era for them of their news programming. Before we get started, please make sure you like, comment, share and subscribe
0:19
Those little things really help us out, and they really help our channel continue to grow
0:25
So the news came on Sunday when NBC News anchor Chuck Todd of Meet the Press, who hosts their
0:32
Sunday show every Sunday for almost a decade, announced that he would be stepping aside
0:39
and that a new host, Kristen Welker, would be taking his place
0:44
Now of course, Todd says this is all of his own volition, that he wishes the show well
0:50
that you know, if it's Sunday, it's Meet the Press, you know, the whole line, everything
0:54
But it actually, there could be a bigger problem at work here, there could be more
0:58
behind the scenes play at work here, and it affects not only NBC, but MSNBC as well
1:05
Let's take a look at Chuck Todd making the announcement. Welcome back
1:09
I have a personal announcement. While today is not my final show, this is going to be my final summer here at Meet the Press
1:15
It's been an amazing, nearly decade-long run. I'm pretty, really proud of what this team and I have built over the last decade, and
1:22
frankly, the last 15 plus years that I've been here at NBC, which also includes my time
1:26
as political director. I've loved so much of this job, helping to explain America to Washington and explain
1:32
Washington to America. When I took over Meet the Press, it was a Sunday show that had a lot of people questioning
1:37
whether it could still have a place in the modern media space. Well, I think we've answered that question and then some
1:42
Now that all sounds well and good, but rumors have persisted for months, actually years
1:47
that Todd's ratings were just horrible, and that a lot of MSNBC and NBC programming, news
1:53
programming, was actually starting to tank in the ratings. A lot of this has to do with Donald Trump no longer being in office
2:01
That was their number one punching bag. It was their number one story every week
2:04
If you count how many times they still say Trump's name, desperate to get some traction
2:08
off his name, it's actually ridiculous. There could be more at work behind the scenes here
2:15
Now Todd says he's going to stay on and he's going to be part of the NBC News crew
2:19
He's going to do more long-form journalism. He's going to do special programming, be a guest on certain programs, but this does not
2:26
bode well for the future of NBC and NBC News and the Meet the Press program in general
2:31
Look, news, especially network news, has been suffering in this new age of instant on-demand
2:38
news that you get on the internet. Cable News feels that every week when it goes look at its ratings, except for Fox News
2:44
Fox News has been the only one that's been able to withstand this storm
2:48
So to me, I believe there's more to the Todd leaving story than meets the eye, and I think
2:53
we're going to find out about it in the coming days and weeks. And I think you're going to see that it's actually a whole landscape change, not just
3:00
one host change. Folks, I want to thank you again for joining us here today
3:05
Again, my name's Carmine Sabia. This is Explain America. We love you guys
3:09
God bless you. Take care, everybody
