Hey everybody, this is Carmine Sabia for Explain America, and we finally have word from Mitch McConnell about his political future and retirement plans
0:09
We're gonna get to it right here, right now. But before we get started, please make sure you like, comment, share, and subscribe
0:16
Those little things are really important to us, and they really make a difference. We really do appreciate it
0:22
So Mitch McConnell, you guys saw this week, or you should have seen this week
0:26
that he was having a press conference, and he just froze. Just froze in front of a group of people. Now, a lot of doctors have been on TV, they've offered their unsolicited medical advice about what they believe happened
0:39
But of course, nobody can actually know medically what happened until and if Mitch McConnell sees a doctor on his own, which I pray he does
0:48
That being said, before I get to his announcement, let's take a look at that scene again
0:53
The story we're following closely. Senate Minority Leader, the Republican Mitch McConnell, says he is fine after a truly unnerving moment on Capitol Hill, on camera this afternoon
1:04
McConnell stopped speaking for some 30 seconds, right in the middle of remarks, at his regularly scheduled news conference. Here is that moment
1:13
After finishing the NDA this week, it's been good bipartisan cooperation and a string of
1:44
Senator, are you good? Mitch? Okay, Mitch. Anything else you want to say? I'm sure it's good back here
1:52
Do you want to say anything else to the press? Go ahead, John
1:58
I'll take it back. Let's go back to you. Go ahead, John
2:04
Quite a concerning moment there, seen as Manu Raju is on Capitol Hill. He was there as it was happening
2:09
And Manu, I understand you spoke to the senator himself afterwards. What did he say to you
2:16
Yeah, he didn't really get into the details about what happened. I tried to ask him about that very unnerving moment that alarmed his colleagues that sent Senator McConnell away from his weekly press conference
2:28
He walked over to his office, which is a short walk from where that press conference was
2:32
And then he later returned and answered questions from reporters like me when I asked him about this and whether he could continue to do his job. He indicated he could
2:40
That's very unfortunate and it's very scary. A lot of people were saying Mitch McConnell should retire right now
2:46
Which is interesting because a lot of those same people did not support the idea of Dianne Feinstein retiring right now
2:53
But I digress. In my opinion, they should both retire right now. There seems to be an issue here that goes beyond what normal people face when they're younger
3:04
And this happens when you get older. It's a shame, but it happens to some people. It happens to all of us
3:10
You can tell, even at my age, you can tell that things aren't exactly the same as they were
3:16
So as you get older and older, different things happen. So there's no shame in that. And I think McConnell needs to realize that and step aside
3:25
Alas, his announcement today was that he will not step aside. He intends to continue his term
3:31
Now keep in mind, Mitch McConnell is 81 years old right now in 2023
3:38
His term ends on January 3rd, 2027. Add four years to that, he's 85
3:45
And he has not said what he will do in the next election. He was asked about it
3:51
He didn't say, no, I won't run for re-election. Or yes, I will run for re-election
3:56
And I don't know if these people in D.C. believe they're immortal. I don't know if they believe they can just go on forever
4:02
I mean, you saw it with the late, great Ruth Bader Ginsburg. You saw it with, you're seeing it with Dianne Feinstein
4:08
You're seeing it with Mitch McConnell. It's not cool. It's not right
4:12
I think there needs to be generational change in Washington, D.C., in both parties
4:18
There needs to be generational change. Until that happens, we have people who maybe don't have the best cognitive ability leading the country
4:26
But I want to know what you guys think. So let me know in the comments. Is Mitch doing the right thing? Or should he step aside now
4:34
Please let me know about Feinstein. And of course, who could forget Joe Biden, right
4:39
So let me know about all that in the comments. Please remember to like, share, and subscribe as well
4:43
