The new BMW M3 is a top car for all sorts of reasons, as you can see
0:15
But one of which is its new drift yser system, which can be accessed by scrolling through the car's M settings menu, then by simply clicking on activate
0:26
To get the best results, you'll need to switch all the M3's safety systems off
0:34
dial its 10-stage traction control system down to zero, and make damn sure that there's no-one else around
0:42
A private piece of land like the track at Landau would work a treat
0:47
And then, well, you do the drifting, if you can, and the system tells you if you're any good or not
0:55
Well, that's the theory, at any rate. Right, I'm sure you'll have read about this
1:03
or even seen some videos about it by now, but if you don't know, the M3 has a new drift mode control system
1:14
everything on it. It's got 10-stage traction control, we know that. But it's also got a drift yser
1:20
And basically it measures how far your drift is, what angle you get to how long it takes and then it gives you a star rating as well So obviously you switch everything off I mean completely everything and then you just start
1:38
drifting in it, and then as soon as you stop drifting, it detects, and then all these numbers
1:42
come up over there. So let's give it a whirl. It's his second gear. Big change of direction there
1:54
Another big change of direction there. Ah, OK
2:06
So, that was a... It's given me four and a half styles for that drift
2:13
which was 166 yards long at an angle of 22.2 degrees. Why can't I get five stars for that
2:24
What on earth are you supposed to do to get a five-star rating? I don't know
2:29
Drift yser or not, this thing goes sideways beautifully. But the fact that it's got this drift yser on it
2:38
I suspect that could mean that you might see one or two brand new M3s and M4s
2:45
because the M4's got this system on it as well, buried quite deep in hedges across the countryside over the next few months
2:55
The drift yser system seems to give you the best marks for getting the car into the biggest angle of slide not necessarily rewarding you for doing the longest or the fastest slides which is a bit weird
3:10
A decent bit of transition work mid-slide also seems to meet with the system's approval
3:16
and ensures that you get good marks. These techniques are of course absolutely vital when honing your M3 driving techniques
3:25
on the damper sections of the B4388. Only joking. OK
3:40
So that's a series of direction changes. And I think that's what this drift yser likes the most
3:47
because you get... I mean, at one point there, I was almost on the lock stops
3:53
Which way was it? yeah through through here i was almost on the lock stops there and then you go almost on the
3:59
lock stops there but i'm only in second gear so it's not there's nothing especially heroic about
4:04
that there's a much faster fourth gear calling out onto the back straight which i'm now going to
4:10
stick it sideways through and just see what rating it gives me then so i give it a bum
4:19
I mean that 80 miles an hour I drifting out there and it only given me four stars for an 84 mile an hour drift Sorry I doing over 80 miles an hour but I only get four stars
4:42
Okay, I'll try again through a different corner, try and get a bit more angle onto it
4:54
Right, what's that? Oh, go away, that's three and a half styles it's given me now
4:59
You know why? It's because the drift angle is only 18.6 degrees
5:04
Whereas when I'm doing it in second gear through the really nudgey bit, that's 22.2 degrees
5:10
So that's all about the drift angle. It's not about the drift speed, it's not about the drift skill, it's all about the drift angle
5:18
It's basically rating you higher the closer you get to actually spinning it
5:25
So there you go. That's the new M3's drift yser, er, ysed
5:33
It's an amusing new piece of tech for sure, but for heaven's sake, make sure you use it responsibly
5:40
So don't say you haven't been warned
