The Ford Mustang Mach-E GT: a new kind of electrified Mustang

The Mustang name is one of the crown jewels in Ford's long back catalogue of hugely significant

cars. When most of us say the word Mustang, we think of the joy of the open road. A car with a

life-affirming sense of style that appeals to so many people. An inclusive, outgoing, fun-loving

character. Since 2019, there's been a new kind of Mustang, the Mach-E, available in high-performance

GT trim. As the name implies, it's an EV. To find out if that old Mustang spirit remains

we're taking it on a drive onto some of Evo's favourite roads

we start our journey here in the Trafford area of Manchester why because just down the road was

once Ford's very first production plant outside of the North American continent opened in 1911

the car it made another icon the Model T the world first mass motor vehicle By the 1930s Ford needed a much larger site and opened a new factory down in Dagenham just outside of London After that this Ford site took on a second life as an

armaments factory in the Second World War. It became a centre of Rolls-Royce Merlin aero engine

production eventually making nearly a thousand of them a month and thereby a significant contribution

to the Allied victory. Today, only a simple blue plaque commemorates both the Ford and

aero engine history of the site in an area that for many people is symbolised by a certain

red-themed football stadium just down the road. It's a sense of history that's perfectly

juxtaposed with the cutting-edge technology found within the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT

Instead of a large pushrod V8 and a manual transmission, we have an electric motor offering

480 brake horsepower, MagneRide suspension capable of ysing inputs up to 1000 times

a second and something called Untame Plus mode. The future has arrived, let's take a

step forward in advanced driver assistance systems, allowing hands-off, eyes-on driving on designated motorways, classified by Ford as Blue Zones, of which 95% of the UK's motorway

network is part of. It makes a relatively straightforward commute from A to B a more

relaxing journey. The Mach-E breaks the convention of the EV crossover with a sloping roofline and pronounced

haunches giving it a more dynamic look. The GT model builds on that with its own styling

kit including a honeycomb front grille and 20 exclusive alloys shod with a bespoke Pirelli P0 tyre The GT model benefits from Ford Performance sport seats which offer a snug embrace plenty of support and comfort

for longer drives. This is a hushed, refined place to be, an ideal vantage point to admire

this glorious scenery. a low centre of gravity thanks to the location of the battery pack. The Mackie GT feels agile

and secure on these roads, helped by accurate steering that allows the driver to position

the car where they want it. The Brembo brakes are particularly effective, although that's

no surprise given the four-pot calipers used front and rear and the 385mm discs. There

are four driving modes to choose from and while whisper seemed appropriate on the streets

of Trafford, I'm using Untame now. The Mustang Mach-E GT is rewarding to drive, versatile and easy to own. It's a new kind
