If you're visiting Hurst Green and don't fancy the 9 mile Tolkien Trail then maybe you'd prefer the walk around Sandrock which is about 3 miles instead. Popular with locals and relatively unknown to visitors it's a great route.

0:02
so we're on the gravel track leading
0:06
from shy Lane towards Sandrock at H
0:09
green it's a lovely morning this is a
0:12
great walk around in a big circle from
0:17
the uh from the village from H green
0:20
it's probably between two and 3 miles
0:24
long so a lot of it
0:26
is um gravel like this timeart road that
0:30
we've just walked up and then we'll get
0:33
to this Junction here and turn right and
0:35
it becomes more of an unmade path that
0:37
leads us down to the uh the
0:41
river where the dogs can have a swim and
0:45
you'll see why it's called Sandrock when
0:48
we get down
0:49
there so we've just turned right off the
0:51
gravel track and now we're just on the
0:56
the foot path that takes us down towards
0:58
Sandrock
1:01
so you can see it gets a bit muddy so if
1:02
you're coming up here for a walk I'd
1:04
suggest you put something on your feet
1:06
that aren't your best Jimmy chews or
1:10
your towny trainers cuz you're going to
1:12
wreck them it's a bit better in the
1:15
summer but uh even then because of all
1:18
these trees it can stay dump and be a
1:20
bit
1:21
muddy if you've got dogs it's a great
1:24
place for them great walk for them they
1:26
can run off the lead you just got to be
1:28
careful as we got fields on either side
1:31
of the track and uh often there can be
1:34
livestock in them but other than that
1:36
it's uh a really good spot to have a a
1:39
run round for
1:41
them so we're just approaching the river
1:45
now at Sandrock this is a quite a
1:48
popular route for people that live
1:50
locally but it's um it's less well known
1:53
for people that are visiting the
1:56
area most people that that come around
2:00
here and walk generally do the Tolkien
2:02
Trail which goes out the other side of
2:05
the village and is much longer it's
2:07
about 9 miles long um so it's really a
2:09
full day of a job but if if you're up
2:11
here and you want to shter walk then you
2:13
know this is ideal it's generally pretty
2:15
quiet you might get the odd person uh
2:18
running the occasional cyclist or
2:20
somebody on a horse but um more often
2:24
than not it's um it's pretty
2:27
quiet so here we are we just crossed
2:30
the river we came from that direction up
2:33
there that takes us back towards shy
2:36
Lane and we'll see the river down there
2:41
and you'll get an idea as to why it's
2:43
called sand rock because of the the um
2:48
the Sandstone that the river's carved
2:51
its way through well I say River it's
2:53
more like a a big
2:55
stream really but it's a great place my
2:58
dogs they love it it up here that's why
3:00
they've gone charging off there's a bit
3:02
of a a natural pool area down there
3:06
let's just take a a look see if we can
3:08
get a Clos look at the at the The Rock
3:12
on the side of the river so you'll see
3:13
it's all very um Sandstone is
3:19
sandstone it can get quite flooded
3:22
during the winter and as you can see
3:25
it's um it's advisable to have something
3:27
decent on your feet she going to get a
3:32
squelchy so the dogs have gone in for
3:34
the morning
3:35
bath they'll all start barking at me to
3:38
throw stones in for
3:40
them but if you if you're up here with
3:43
dogs and you enjoy water this is a great
3:45
place great place for to go have a
3:48
paddle go on in you go go on
3:52
then go on get
3:56
in can see how much the
4:10
so now the dogs have had their bath
4:13
we'll carry on along the foot path and
4:15
this path will bring us out opposite the
4:18
Village Hall in h
4:20
grain so you may depending on which way
4:24
you choose to do this walk you might
4:26
want to park your car on the village
4:27
hall and do it in the opposite direction
4:31
to the way that that I've done it so
4:33
you'll come down this path and go that
4:36
way the way we've
4:39
come but either way it's uh it's a great
4:43
place so you can start up there and do
4:45
the 3M Walkin
4:48
reverse just remember to bring your dog
4:51
if you've got
4:56
one so this is
4:58
Sandrock
5:02
known to the locals but not often
5:05
visited by people from outside the
5:14
[Applause]
5:24
[Applause]
5:28
area
5:30
come on this way come on
5:33
dogs come
5:35
up so there's the entrance to the walk
5:38
just down that guinel there and those
5:41
Gates that's the entrance to stonia
5:44
college which uh is literally 5 minutes
5:47
walk
5:49
away there's a village we're just going
5:51
to head down in this
5:56
direction the old arms houses
6:00
that were removed from up on the fell
6:03
many years ago and uh reconstructed
6:07
Stone by Stone in the in the village
6:10
here it's a village
6:13
hall just coming up on the left so if
6:16
you're visiting this is where you can
6:18
park your
6:21
car so it's an ideal walk
6:24
for
6:26
Village we do um often have functions on
6:30
there and it's available to hire for
6:33
parties and uh and weddings and other
6:36
activities depending on what you need to
6:39
do and just going up on the left is the
6:42
Bailey arms
6:44
Pub just reopened after being closed
6:47
for almost 3
6:50
years the hazards of running a pub in a
6:55
rural location I
6:57
suppose so hopefully that'll uh be
7:01
successful so you'll be able to go in
7:03
there for a drink and something to eat
7:06
when you visit the area they do have
7:08
accommodation there but I don't know
7:09
whether they'll be um making the rooms
7:12
available so it's open for drinks and
7:17
snacks and then if you head down that
7:21
road there that's the Dane and that
7:23
takes you in a big circle back around to
7:26
uh the start of the Walk that we've just
7:28
done
7:30
so we're now heading down the
7:33
dean there's the P behind us the
7:38
[Music]
7:41
baile so for us we're coming towards the
7:43
end of our walk maybe about another half
7:45
a mile or
7:55
so oh and here we
7:57
are this is is where our walk
8:02
started at this Junction
8:04
here so if you carry Straight
8:07
on to the next Junction on your
8:10
right and that takes you along the track
8:15
where we started off turn through the
8:17
gravel track
8:20
eventually and we're
8:23
on as you can
8:25
see we're on shy
8:27
Lane and you can probably just see the
8:30
village in the distance so we
8:33
want all the way
8:38
around
8:40
there and back up that
8:42
hill which is why I'm out of
8:45
breath there's the old school
8:50
hall now you have it that's the sand
8:52
rock Walk So hopefully you'll enjoy it
