Spaniel training in hot weather
Jul 13, 2022
If you need to train your spaniel when the weather is hot then you should consider what you do and the time of day that you do it. Your spaniel can become overheated if you get this wrong and you could make him unwell.

so the summer's a really great time to
0:03
get out with your dogs and you know it's
0:06
a good time to do some training but um
0:09
particularly with spaniels you need to
0:10
be careful if
0:12
if you're going to do stuff like hunting
0:14
because they can get hot very quickly
0:18
and start to blow
0:20
and you know this will
0:22
often just make your dog
0:24
pace itself and slow down which
0:27
you know if you look into in
0:29
competitions you don't want your dog to
0:31
be um
0:32
to be sort of looking after its pace you
0:34
want it to be going full pelt so you
0:37
need to be careful in the summer when
0:39
the weather's warm particularly if
0:40
you're doing hunting go out
0:43
early morning
0:44
late evening
0:46
when things have cooled off and
0:48
keep the sessions to a minimum
0:51
summer's a good time for spending
0:53
just some time out walking
0:56
keeping your dog fit letting them have a
0:58
good charge around like this so you're
1:00
not putting them under any pressure
1:02
they're exploring but you're still
1:04
keeping them um you know under
1:06
reasonable control you've got to try and
1:09
keep them fit and you know a bit of free
1:11
time playing around is
1:13
not going to do them any harm if if
1:15
they're well trained you can soon iron
1:17
out any little
1:18
creases that appear
1:20
just from there from running free
1:24
and it's a good time to get them
1:26
involved with water as well if you've
1:28
got a young dog
1:29
and there's not been near water
1:32
then you can let them run around like
1:34
this
1:35
get nice and warm and then when you do
1:37
get near some water the appeal of it is
1:39
so much better for them you know
1:42
yourself when you're hot
1:43
if you get near some water it's very
1:45
tempting to uh to jump in
1:47
and cool off
1:49
and of course you can do other bits of
1:51
training such as
1:53
some retriever training
1:55
sitting and staying
1:57
um basic lead work
1:59
and other things that uh that you might
2:02
want to do
2:02
with their with your puppies if it's a
2:05
young job dog you can do a lot of
2:06
socializing and take them to different
2:09
places such as you know this sort of
2:11
place up in the forest or to the beach
2:14
or around town
2:16
so you know make the most make the most
2:18
of the opportunities but don't push the
2:20
hunting train too much because
2:22
you know as i've said they can get
2:24
really hot and bothered and um
2:28
we could even end up with uh with heat
2:30
stroke so you need to be to be careful
2:32
with particularly hunting
2:38
but it's great just to get out not
2:40
raining
2:41
and
2:42
let your dogs charge around just to
2:45
burn up some of that
2:46
mental and physical energy
2:49
but um otherwise you wouldn't get the
2:51
chance to
2:52
to work off at this time of year
2:57
so take it easy
2:59
and
3:00
enjoy spending some time with you with
3:03
your hands come on
3:05
betty nimrod
3:07

3:21
