About a year ago, we showed the Netflix hit series- The Queen’s Gambit to the kids we train at our Chess academy in Makoko (The largest floating slum in the world). They were deeply inspired by the lead character Beth Harmon, an orphan girl who went on to become world champion. It was a story most of them could relate to.
The girls came to me afterwards and asked if they could make their own Chess movie as a re-enactment of the Queen’s gambit, I told them we didn’t have all of the resources and equipment to bring it to life, but they reminded me that it was possible to do great things from a small place and they were gonna use all the resources in their own community to make it a reality.
One of our tutors volunteered to record them. We left the entire creative direction to the kids and they created this masterpiece in two days.
I’m in absolute awe of their courage and brilliance and I think it’s important to share this with the world. Talent is universal, but opportunity isn’t. Here’s to bridging the opportunity gap for more girls by empowering them with education and helping them believe that their dreams are valid.
