not all bmx riders are small and skinny people okay there's a handful of bmx riders who weigh
0:06
over 200 pounds maybe even closer to 300 pounds and they're still able to ride the bike
0:11
sup es they're still able to learn tricks they're still able to have fun and a lot of people
0:16
use it as a way to lose weight in a really fun way we have a lot of bike school members who got
0:21
a bike to lose weight and ride with their kids and so we have someone in the discord named gunner
0:26
and he is searching for a new BMX bike. Gunnar says that he is looking to buy a complete to get
0:32
back into BMX. He rode as a kid. He's six foot two, about 320 pounds, and he found four options
0:38
that are pretty good for him. So here's the deal. If you are around that weight and you're looking
0:43
to get into BMX, I just want to run through some tips for you and some things you need to look for
0:47
in a BMX bike because the reality is even me, like I weigh 220 pounds, I break a lot of parts
0:54
and a good reason for that is my weight. Parts are designed to withstand a certain amount of
1:00
stress and a certain amount of pressure and when you have more weight going down on the bike
1:04
things start to bend and things start to break. I had a bigger issue with high tensile steel than
1:09
my friends because they were a lot smaller than me and so if you're a bigger rider, I'm gonna break
1:13
down the things you need to look for in a complete bike and help you understand why these things are
1:17
important so let's get right into it. The biggest thing here is aftermarket parts. Aftermarket parts
1:23
are so much better than the stock parts that you going to find on 90 of the BMX bikes If we look at something like a Kink Curb this bike is very low quality It high tensile steel Everything mass produced and
1:36
there's not a lot of attention to detail, extra strength going into it. There's just not a lot of
1:40
extras into this bike. But if we look at something like the Kink Williams, it's going to have some
1:46
higher end aftermarket parts. Now the biggest difference here is obviously, aside from the
1:51
aftermarket parts is obviously the price. The Williams is going to cost a lot more than the
1:56
cheaper kink option, but it's going to come with a lot more aftermarket parts. And so these
2:00
aftermarket parts are actually exactly what professionals ride and what high-end riders
2:05
ride. These aftermarket parts are designed to withstand bigger drops, bigger riding, heavier
2:10
people. And so that's why it's just so important that if you are a heavier rider to get the best
2:17
quality bike that you can afford. Now, I'm not telling you guys to go and spend $1,500 on a
2:23
custom BMX bike or $1,300 on a Soundwave. If you can afford it, that's the way to go. Build a custom
2:29
bike, get a We The People Envy, get a Sunday Soundwave, something like that. But a lot of people
2:33
can't, especially if you're just getting the bike to lose some weight and to chill as a hobby thing
2:38
You don't need to be super serious about it, and I don't want you guys to buy a really expensive bike
2:42
and not end up riding it very much. But I want you to look at your budget realistically
2:47
and buy the highest quality bike that you can afford. I put together a free bike recommendation form
2:52
where you just tell me some information about yourself and I recommend the top three bikes that are perfect for you The link for that in the description But that is the most important thing okay So if your budget is you going to want to find a bike that has full
3:06
Kermali, double wall rims, and as many aftermarket parts as possible. For a heavier rider, I would
3:11
recommend staying away from single wall rims. Single wall rims are awful. They're going to
3:16
definitely bend when you bunny hop, when you spin, like stay far away from single wall rims. And then
3:22
obviously high tensile steel. The less high tensile steel, the better. High tensile steel is 1020
3:27
material where Chromali is 4130. It's like, I don't know, it's a lot stronger. Chromali is a lot
3:34
stronger than high tensile steel and typically what you're going to see with Chromali is it snapping
3:38
instead of bending. I've bent many high tensile steel frames because of my weight and the way that
3:43
I impacted the bike and I think sometimes when I was younger I would have been much better off with
3:47
a chromoly frame or a chromoly bike instead of a high tensile steel bike. I got in some pretty bad
3:52
situations with crashes, my bike giving out on me and me getting hurt. And it was because that that
3:57
was weaker material and ultimately I was too heavy for it. And so I really urge you to take this
4:02
seriously. If you're looking for a bike and you want to ride and you want to do tricks, you really
4:06
want to get something that lasts for you. Okay. So the best thing to do, here's what I would do if
4:11
I were you. I would sit down and I would look at my monies. Okay. How much monies do I have? How
4:16
how much monies can I afford to spend on a BMX bike without getting a divorce, without making my wife mad
4:22
whatever, okay? Sit down look at that and then go to my free bike recommendation fill that out and put in your budget as the highest budget I send you those three bikes that are perfect for you and then you can kind of look
4:36
through those three. So then you're going from like 90 bike options to three options. That's
4:40
what I would do. If you don't want to use my recommendation, which would be silly, that's fine
4:45
you just go to Dan's Comp or go to any website where you would buy BMX bikes and filter it by
4:50
price. And look for those things at the higher end. But I also urge you, typically, okay
4:56
Typically, the bikes at that price point are going to be higher quality, but there are some
5:01
bikes out there that are like $600, but really should be $300 or they're $300 quality
5:08
And that's where bike reviews come in. Okay. You want to find those bikes at that price point
5:13
watch some reviews, see how good they actually are for the price, make sure that it's a good value
5:18
and then pull the trigger on it. Okay. Best thing you can do, sort by your budget
5:22
find the bikes that you like in that budget, do a little more research to make sure that they're
5:27
worth that price, and then you are good. But I really urge you to look for full chromoly
5:33
double wall rims, and as many aftermarket parts as possible. A 510 chain is going to be better
5:38
than a 410 chain. A half link chain that comes on the Sprosa Novus is going to be even better
5:42
than a 510 chain. An alloy sprocket is going to be better than a steel sprocket that would come on
5:48
low quality cult. There's just lots of things like that that you need to consider. If you have any
5:53
questions about BMX, join the discord so you can ask questions just like Gunner and get them
5:58
answered on this YouTube channel. We'll see you guys in the next video
