And welcome to another edition of Small Business Friday

Today's spotlight, girl power hockey apparel. This story begins back in 2015 when the owner's middle daughter came to them and said she didn't want to take dance classes no more
0:13
Say suggested softball, volleyball, horseback riding, you know, the activities that are perceived as more feminine
0:19
But then they went to their nephew's hockey game. And she looked up and said, I want to do that, which she went on to do
0:26
Problem was finding clothes that weren't cheap, weren't vinyl, which proved to be
0:29
a problem that they could not solve until they did it themselves. And girl power hockey apparel
0:34
was born. They found the best materials, created powerful designs, and made a commitment to growing
0:40
the girls' game and the awareness around the girls' game. With clothing like joggers
0:45
beanies, shirts, and hoodies, girl power hockey apparel has everything your female hockey
0:50
star needs to look the part off the ice. And they're not just about shirts and hoodies for
0:54
their hockey girls and women, but also about growing the female hockey game, sharing news stories
0:59
focusing on heroes, inspirational figures of the game, and most importantly, providing a place for them to shine
1:05
So if you're trying to get your girl in the game, visit girl-hyphenpower.com
1:10
That's girl with a U-hyphen power.com, and help your girl step her game up
1:17
All right, Ryan, speaking of step in there. Games up. Those female athletes involved
1:22
That little girl grew up to be Sidney Crosby. Right? Off and rolling
1:30
Well, speaking of stepping their game up, our Lions are going to have to do just that
1:34
especially defensively, as they travel to New England, to Foxborough, to take on the New England Patriots, Bill Belichick
1:43
and the former head coach of the Detroit Lions, Matt Patricia. This should be an interesting contest, Ryan, as the Lions defense is just playing awful
1:51
allowing 165 plus yards a game on the ground at over 5.5 yards per carry, which ranks dead last in the league
2:00
And the Pats, they got a pretty good one-two punch at the running back position
2:05
So this should be interesting, even with the whole third string quarterback and Bailey Zappy
2:09
taking over because Mack Jones are still not sure. His ankle, low ankle sprain, but he did throw some passes, but they're not expecting him to start
2:17
Bailey Zappi is going to be getting his first start of the year for the Pats
2:21
which should give some hope to the Lions fans out there and trying to find a way to pull on a flat-out upset here as the Lions are three and a half point dogs
2:28
but that running game is no joke in New England, and our running defense is terrible
2:33
So you hope what the lines are able to do since Bailey Zappy is back at quarterback
2:39
is just load up the box and then make their running backs who aren't great
2:43
No, they got I'm Andre Stevenson over there, and who's the other running back
2:48
Damien Harris? Damien Harris, there he is. Feels like he's been there for 10 years
2:54
So it's not like it's a two-headed monster at running back, right
2:57
Like, you should be able to relatively and reasonably stop those two gentlemen
3:03
especially if you have a rookie quarterback back there. And a rookie quarterback who's, you know, it's not Kenny Pickett, right
3:10
It's not some guy that was drafted in the first round or even the first three rounds
3:13
I think Zappi was probably a sixth or sixth-or-six- or seventh-round draft pick coming out of Western Kentucky
3:19
I guess your kind of fear would be that Zappi looked pretty good against the Packers' defense
3:24
And the Packers have a much better defense than what the Lions do. The Packers also, of course, weren't preparing to play Bailey Zappy, and the Lions have an entire week to prepare for what Zappi brings to the table and hopefully for what he's not bringing to the table, which should be a whole heck of a lot
3:42
The Patriots game is a game that I thought the Lions were going to win anyway, even if the Patriots did have Mack Jones, even if they had Brian Hoyer, and now with Zappi
3:52
So for the Lions, I think you just keep the game playing and you keep the defense simple. you make Bailey Zappy beat you because what the Patriots don't really have is weapons
4:01
Jacoby Myers is a pretty good receiver and they spent a whole bunch of money on their
4:06
tight ends but their tight ends, none of them are any good. So it's not a team like the Seahawks
4:11
last week where even though you have Gino Smith their quarterback they have D Metcalfe And they have Tyler Lockett and they have these guys that can hurt you Excuse me And a sudden they have those guys that can end up hurting you
4:25
The Patriots just don't have that. So if I'm the Lions, if I'm Aaron Glenn, this is going to be my simplest game plan that I've had all year
4:33
I am going to stack the box. I am not going to let you beat me by running the football
4:38
If you're going to beat me, you're going to have to throw it. and if that's what happens, I guess that's just what ends up happening
4:44
But that's how I would approach it from a defensive side. And I would force Matt Patricia to try and put up 35 points on you because the Lions
4:56
and you're going to get to some of the injuries in a second, I'm sure. The Lions, we haven't seen them have a problem scoring points all year
5:03
and I don't expect that it happens in this game. Yeah, I agree with you
5:07
It's a brilliant plan to stack the box because, like you said, As far as past catching weapons, the Pats have a whole bunch of two slash three wide receivers
5:18
Meyer, you said, Aguilar, Devante Parker, these are all the number two or number three guy
5:23
They don't have the number one. They just don't. And their tight ends have absolutely been disappointing
5:28
I thought their tight ends would be a much better mix in this offense than they have been since coming over to New England
5:34
And it just hasn't happened. The running game, while you want to joke about it, they're really not a joke
5:39
I mean, they had 150 plus yards on 30 plus carries against Green Bay
5:43
who has definitely a better defense than we do. But like you said, they were preparing for a different quarterback, a different scenario
5:50
and the paths were very smart about what to do with Zappi when they put him in
5:54
His passes, the ones that were complete and good, came out of play action
5:58
So they were still fearing the run that they were able to do. If it was just a straight drop back and you had all the personnel out and no running back there
6:06
he wasn't completing anything, not anything more than two yards anyway. So your logic is absolutely sound
6:12
For the Lions, I mean, we're still offensively missing a whole bunch of people
6:17
We've already heard basically that DeAndre Swift is not going to be playing in this game
6:21
The idea is to hold them out through the bye week, which is next week, and have him come back fully healthy
6:26
That might be the plan with Amman Ross St. Brown as well. He has not practiced yet, and they're not sure if he's going to be playing or not
6:33
I would not expect it at this point. I think they're going to do the same thing. I think they should do the same thing that they're doing with
6:39
Swift and let him rest. Let him get healthy and get fully healthy after another week off after this one to where he can
6:45
come back and be himself because when he's himself, he is extremely dangerous
6:50
So it's all about the other guys stepping up. Hock apparently is a little bit banged up after this past week
6:55
He hasn't practiced very much. We've seen it with Reynolds and Chark as well. So it's not going to be all hands on deck as far as the lions are concerned either offensively
7:04
And yes, they have been putting up a lot of points, but they've been putting up a lot of points
7:08
against some terrible defenses. And while the pats aren't a fantastic defense
7:12
they actually are so against the pass. I think they're actually only 26th
7:17
The 19th overall, 26th against the run. It's 11th against the pass
7:21
So that's actually their strength on the defensive side. But there's going to be a different situation
7:26
for these paths coming in with the Lions who, I don't know if the Pats know who to scheme for
7:32
wide receiver-wise, because we don't even know for sure who's going to be in the game for the Lions
7:36
when it comes to wide receivers. I mean, if the pads are 26 against the run, that's how the Lions score all their points anyway
7:43
Maybe not how you score, because I know Goff had four touchdown passes last game
7:47
But they're moving the ball on the ground. For the most part, they're not really moving it through the air too much
7:54
And if you are the Lions, last week I thought they were going to be
7:59
it was going to be tough on offense without their weapons. I know the Seahawks have a worse defense than what the Patriots do
8:04
But it showed as long as their offensive line was able to get that. push and was able to keep the pocket clean they were able to move the ball down the
8:12
field and the golf was able to put a few of those passes in the end zone they had
8:17
some play where Hawkinson was just wide open and then the other touchdown passes
8:21
give credit to Ben Johnson and his you kind of his scheme down there in the red
8:26
zone because while you might not have been overly impressed with any of golf actual like passes on his touchdown passes because it pretty wide open to some of those guys that a testament to the scheme right you want to get
8:40
your guys wide open you don't want to have your quarterback having to make those
8:44
Patrick Mahomes type throws where it has to be in the specific spotter and it's not going to be
8:49
a completion so I think that that's something that the Lions can do and then what
8:54
the Lions are going to have to get better at obviously is just when the
8:59
Patriots do get in the red zone because they're going to get in the red zone. You have to force them to kick field goals
9:04
The Lions haven't really been able to have anybody kick field goals all year
9:09
They were the last going into the Seahawk game in like Red Zone touchdowns allowed
9:15
Like the percentage of times the opponent has gone in the red zone and scored a touchdown. The Seahawks game certainly didn't change any of that because there was a whole lot of touchdowns scored by the Seattle Seahawks
9:26
So when you're down there, you have to go. force the Patriots to at least kick a field goal
9:32
We talk a lot about the bend and don't break defense with Michigan State, which is just break
9:36
and break some more, which seems like that's what the Lions philosophy is as well
9:41
But it's like you really, you really need that to come to fruition
9:45
I'm not asking the Lions to hold the Patriots to under 200 total yards, but you just
9:50
you can't let them get to 30, 31 points. Like you got to keep them 27 to like at max 30
9:58
So that way you give your offense a chance to go out and win the game for you because I don't think the defense will
10:03
We just need to see more stops. And I think the lines are getting a break this week with Zappi behind center
10:08
And it gives them a better chance than they've had all year to hopefully get some stops and then get this thing sort of back on the right track and go two and three headed into the by week
10:21
Yeah. And preparing for Zappi, I would think might be a little easier for Dan Campbell because he knows him
10:28
coached him in the senior bowl last year. I spoke very highly of him, talking about how high his
10:33
intelligence is, how quickly he picks up an offense, how composed he is, all that stuff. But I wonder
10:37
from that time working together if maybe he picked them on some tendencies of ways to
10:41
rattlesappy and help the Lions defense maybe get some success where they haven't really had much
10:47
at all this year. Yeah, I think it's a great point about the Senior Bowl and Dan Campbell
10:53
and the Lions staff as a whole. It wasn't just Dan Campbell down there coaching those guys
10:59
The Lions were able to take their, essentially their entire coaching staff
11:03
And they coach the guys at the Senior Bowl. They got a great look at Zappi, obviously
11:07
And there was a reason, I guess, that they decided not to draft him
11:12
or any quarterback for that matter. And hopefully they can kind of exploit and show us what that reason was on Sunday
11:19
Yeah. And speaking of exploiting and showing, I think the Packers did a little bit of that in this past game against the Patriots
11:26
where they have their one-two punch at running back as well, which Jamal Williams used to be a part of with Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon
11:33
And we can take Aaron Jones out because if you want to make comparisons, we'll put Swift as more of the Aaron Jones style
11:38
We'll do the comparison of Williams and A.J. Dylan, because that's who's going to be playing for us, as Swift is not going to be playing
11:45
So with just looking at what he did, A.J. Dylan had 73 yards on 17 carries
11:50
It's pretty good numbers there for. split back and if Williams can duplicate that if he can have about 80 yards rushing on the same
11:58
number of carries it will definitely open things up for the passing game to attack as well and even
12:04
be able to utilize a play action if the running game is actually doing what it has pretty much done
12:09
so far all year which has been extremely dangerous whether swift is in the lineup or not it's just
12:15
it's the patriots it's bill bellichick the man is just a ridiculous genius when it comes to
12:21
teaming and planning and taking away your strongest suit and making you look foolish in the
12:27
process. And so it just worries me when we're going up against someone of that ilk with a defense
12:32
as bad as ours and an offense as banged up as ours. I'm not worried. We beat the Patriots
12:39
and we had Matt Patricia as our head coach. Anything is possible. One of the few wins we got in the
12:44
Matt Patricia era That was at home This is in Gillette And I was at the last time the Lions were at Gillette It was like a 34 to 9 beat down It was embarrassing It was like 2014 something like that It a different animal having to go on the road
12:58
obviously. You don't have your fans behind you, and there's not going to be many Lions fans in Gillette. I promise that it's going to be packed full of Patriots fans. Even if there are
13:05
a few Lions fans there, they're not going to be heard. Not over the Patriots fans out there
13:09
Those people love their team, just like ours, love our team. And I just, it's going to be a lot for
13:15
Dan Campbell to get that road win. And we just have so many things going against us in this game
13:19
It's just, it's hard to be optimistic going in, except for the fact that the Patriots defense
13:25
is not the Patriots defense of old. And we should have the advantage offensively, even with some of the guys out that are
13:32
we've mentioned. I'm telling you right now and our fans listening, if Matt Patricia puts up 35 points
13:38
and beats us, I'm not going to come in next Monday either. Man, why people do this
13:45
I can't handle that. How is it Matt Patricia doing it? How is it Matt Patricia doing it
13:51
He's the de facto one. You think he's actually calling plays? I do
13:56
I think that's why the Patriots suck. They ain't been good. Another thing, we've got to have Hawk involved
14:03
because it's another thing that we've seen so far throughout the year is that tight ends
14:06
have been a bit of a problem for the Patriots. Mark Andrews gave the Patriots trouble a couple weeks ago
14:11
Obviously, we're talking more of the better tight ends of football. But I think so is Hawk when he's on his game
14:15
And so especially with St. Brown possibly not being most likely not being in the game
14:21
Hock has got to ball out, continue what he did last week, and give this offense chances to move the ball down the field
14:27
and utilize his size, his strength to help that happen. And with it seemingly being a weak point of the Patriots defense, I would expect Dan Campbell to exploit that
14:37
and see another big game from Hockinson. Yeah, it just really depends on how banged up he is, but he's certainly going to get the targets to do it
14:45
All right, now, and I don't know if this matters. Yeah. I don't know if this matters or not, Ryan
14:51
but the Patriots are going to be wearing some throwback uniforms based on the ones they wore in the 80s, early 90s
14:56
It's the Pat Patriot logo with the white face mask and all that, and the Pats are nine and three when they're wearing those throwback uniforms
15:04
Was that the cool red ones? Yeah, I think they're wearing, I don't know if they're going to be wearing the red
15:08
Is that era, but it's like the white and blue, I think. I don't think they're wearing red for, like, at home
15:13
I'm not sure. Oh. Nope. The red ones are cooler. Advantage lines
15:18
All right. So we're looking at here a Pat's line of minus three and 45 and a half
15:25
So how are you feeling frogish? You can jump on this one where you want to go. I would definitely take the over
15:31
The lions are four and oh in overs this year. And as far as the spread goes, I would take
15:38
I think I would take the lions. I think both these teams are just bad. And I think the lions can outright win this game
15:43
so I will take the three and a half to add on to the lion's score
15:48
The lions and Dan Campbell have been pretty good when they're the underdog. They've done their job as far as the spread is concerned
15:54
They did not do their job last week when they were the favorites. But I think I'm with you
15:59
I think the 45 and a half needs to be higher, especially if the lions put up 30 in their own right
16:05
And I think they will. And I think the three and a half, that hook makes it a little nicer to pick the lions
16:10
Because if it was just flat out three, it's kind of harder. It might be a flat-out push, but I think the lions can be inside of a field goal on this one
16:17
and it should be a close game, hopefully. Should be a good game, hopefully
16:21
And I hope you're right. I hope the lions get a flat-out victory, but I can't pick that yet, not with the defense being as bad as they've been
16:28
I need to see a little more something out of the defense to pull their weight
16:32
I know we don't really have the horses to pull their weight yet, and that's what more drafts
16:36
and more free agents off-signings, off-season signings will bring. But I think they can keep this one close and stay inside that three and a half
16:43
half. I think they'll flat out win, but I would certainly take the point. I know you just
16:48
Hey, Ryan Griffin here. Thank you so much for watching today's episode of Griffin and Bats
