The Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts

Aug 3, 2025

Join me as I explore the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Norman Rockwell was an illustrator who painted the front cover of over 300 issues of the Saturday Evening Post. He also painted portraits of several key American leaders of the 20th Century, including a portrait of JFK. Some of his most famous work is on display here in Stockbridge, including the original oil painting of his triple self portrait. Norman Rockwell was fascinated by electricity (as many of his era were) and there's a wonderfully optimistic and nostalgic gallery dedicated to his work, commissioned by GE, to promote the use of electric lights in the home. I also enjoyed the temporary exhibition of works by Walter Wick, which was on throughout the summer of 2025. I'd never heard of Wick before - from Berkshire Country, MA, Wick is a photo illustrator. He makes these wonderful models and then photographs them, creating unusually lifelike, yet impossible, scenes. The gift shop and gardens are great to explore too. In the gardens, there's a sculpture trail with lots of work by Norman Rockwell's son (who also narrates the video in the basement gallery), and you can even visit Norman Rockwell's studio, which was relocated to the museum site from its original location on the main street of Stockbridge.
