0:00
hi my name is Dom Robinson and this is my deep wreck diver Channel today's video is from one of the best Dives I
0:07
did last year we were 50 Mi out in the middle of the English Channel but conditions were fantastic not just on
0:14
the surface but underwater the visibility was incredible we had dolphins on the decompression stop and
0:20
to cap it all we recovered this which is the maker plat from the SS Hans Yensen a
0:27
Danish ship sunk in 19 16 by a German submarine and missing ever since so I
0:35
really hope that you enjoyed today's video if you don't please tell me why in the comments if you do that would be
0:41
great as well as always feel free to like subscribe turn on your
0:46
notifications but I've got a particular message today for my mate Andy who I hope is watching this he said I'd never
0:54
do this but I do want to tell you Andy you never loved me
1:00
anyway enough of that and on with the video this is a sat out 50 Mi offshore
1:06
middle of the English Channel you see it's a glorious day everyone's on the boat getting themselves ready getting
1:12
kitted up and getting ready to go in there's a skipper uh that's Ben this
1:19
is his boat Size Matters part of the uh excellent inde deep team fast forward a
1:24
couple of minutes you can see people are even more prepared I'm good back about
1:30
to get in part of the first pair you'll see I've got my uh my scooter on my lap there all ready to go and uh this is
1:38
where things probably start to go wrong because unbeknown to me the clip that holds it together Has Come Undone just
1:45
to give you an example of how easy this is to do you can see there comes off really really easily and once it's done
1:52
there's nothing really other than a bit of friction or water pressure holding the scooter together I'm sure I don't
1:58
need to point out to anyone the getting sea waterer in there would be a spectacularly bad idea anyway I've got
2:05
no idea that that clip Has Come Undone so here I am uh standing up and about to
2:11
follow the first diver into the water and as I do that my scooter falls
2:17
apart right in front of me it's incredible I'm incredibly lucky that it doesn't fall into the water that you
2:24
know I'm lucky that I'm not a bit further ahead on the left but all I can do is basically drag in the remnants of
2:30
my scooter back into the boat and then try and figure out what happens next no one on the boat has ever seen anything
2:37
like this happen before poor old Freya she's the crew she's uh she's utterly uh
2:43
astounded and I guess confused you know this isn't part of the uh the standard crew briefing for for anyone so she does
2:51
what any sensible person does she calls a skipper Ben comes over now he's uh
2:56
he's not seen this before either he's also obviously concerned about the the diver who's got uh in the water in front
3:02
of me so once he's conf confirmed that the diver's okay he asks me what I I
3:07
want to happen I guess uh a couple of different options I could uh I could
3:13
have just got in the water and left the scooter uh that would have been probably the easiest thing to do but um I am
3:20
really Keen to get my scooter on this dive because I uh I know how good conditions are going to be so um I
3:26
figure the scooters uh came apart pretty easily uh it's got to be pretty easy to put back together again and I know Ben
3:32
is a really talented competent bloke so uh so what I'm doing now is I'm I'm standing up wearing all my gear uh still
3:39
with all my stages on still with my rebreather on and I'm trying to explain to Ben how to put together the uh the
3:45
scooter he's never used one of these scooters before he's never done it before so actually he's doing he's doing
3:51
a really good job here um apart from one small problem I realize at this point is
3:56
that he's put it together upside down so the uh the video should be on the same
4:02
side as the the handle that I'm holding on and as you can see they're they're they're opposite each other I haven't
4:08
realized this yet so I'm continuing to uh explain to Ben what he needs to do about the strap how it needs to uh to go
4:16
uh onto the scooter and uh you know how it's going to reach the clip and how it's going to be uh clipped together so
4:22
absolutely fair play to Ben he's he's doing that really nicely and it's all it's all coming together it's all
4:27
looking really good I kind of wish I had a a stopwatch um just to time how
4:33
quickly Ben has done this considering how little he knows about the scooter and how quickly he's sorting it all out
4:39
it is uh it's really really impressive um I'm obviously sitting here just Keen
4:45
as anything for him to get on with it so I can get it back and uh there you go he says it's all done it's all good to go
4:51
and I think at this point I've just realized that it's uh it's 180° out and
4:56
he's going to need to take it apart and uh and do it all over again so I've just uh pointed that out to him and uh he's
5:03
he's cracking on with it and once again you know it's a real um testimony to to
5:08
you know what a great bloke Ben is and also you know I guess how good he is at
5:14
these kind of things despite being a relatively young person they uh him and
5:19
his Oppo James they look after all the boats that in deep of got they look after the uh the gas systems uh all the
5:27
the nitrox and triix uh blend facilities and they look after obviously all the
5:32
different parts of uh the engines and all those kind of things so you can see you know Ben is is really cracking on
5:38
with this he's got it back together again he's uh well he's flipped it round first of all he's got it back together
5:44
again he's putting the clip back on it and uh any moment now it's going to be
5:49
ready for me to uh to to give it to me and ready for me to get back in the water so even you know something that
5:55
was potentially really uh really serious and kind of you know challenging has uh
6:01
has been overcome really quickly and uh great news for me because I I want my scooter uh for the dive and there it is
6:08
you can see Ben's uh Ben's got it back together again he's he's bringing it over I'm just mentioning to him I want
6:13
the crotch uh I want that on my crotch U which he's doing he's giving it to me
6:19
and uh I'm I'm ready to go back in again so it's just a case of of Ben moving bo
6:24
back around to uh to to the shot we we haven't drifted very far it's it's pretty slack on the site there isn't
6:30
very much wind and so there I am on the back of the lift all ready to go within
6:36
a really short space of time so uh really impressive I have to say though
6:41
uh I've been standing up in my gear for a lot longer than I would uh I would be happy with so I'm I'm really Keen to get
6:48
back in the water and you can see Ben's obviously motoring a bit there because he wants uh he wants me to get in with
6:53
uh with the other diver who's gone in ahead of me and uh is no doubt sitting there confused and wondering uh
6:59
wondering where I am so that's uh that's a thing on everyone's agenda so fast
7:05
forward a little bit and you can see the shots just coming in on the left hand side I get a shout from fer and uh I'm
7:12
going to be in the water there I go and uh all ready to crack on with the dive no worse for my uh for my slightly
7:19
shocking experience with the scooter you may ask whether I was a bit concerned
7:25
about whether the uh the scooter would leak once I got in the water um I guess that was kind of slightly on my mind at
7:31
this point um but I know that the dive extra scooters are really good and I I
7:37
did actually watch Ben putting it together relatively closely so um I'm I'm pretty confident that he's he's
7:43
managed it it's not a difficult thing to do and so uh you know it's great news I'm in the water Scooter's working you
7:50
can see there that I'm I'm gunning it down and the uh the next item on my agenda is to get to the bottom and the
7:56
reason I'm so Keen to do that is because uh this is is the second dive that we've done on this wreck the first one was was
8:03
mindblowing as well and I know how good it's going to be when we get down there
8:09
so I just I just want to get on with it we we know that this uh this wreck is
8:14
doesn't have a name we thought at this point that we had a name we thought it was a wck called the made of spai which
8:20
which seemed to fit everything we knew about it and therefore what we were doing was we were going down to have another look and see if we could find
8:26
something to uh to confirm that name spai is actually an island in Greece and
8:32
it's uh Ben's family have got connections to that area so he was he was particularly Keen to uh that we try
8:39
and find something it's also a relatively common name for uh for Greek
8:44
ships the one that we thought it was was built in 1921 and sunk very shortly afterwards
8:51
following a collision in in 1924 so quite unusual wasn't a war wreck
8:58
um but um we we were fairly certain that we' found it because the dimensions the cargo the location everything was was
9:05
pretty much spot on so um but we needed that definitive proof as you've probably
9:10
seen I've uh I've turned on the the video camera and the video lights on my scooter which means that I'm going to be
9:17
able to show you video from the from the front of the scooter Now by and large
9:22
that's better quality than the stuff I get off my uh off the power lens cameras mounted on my head so I'll be I'll be
9:29
using the video off the front of the scooter except for points like uh like now where I'm going to start using my
9:35
hands to do things so uh here I am at the bottom of the uh of the shot and uh
9:41
as people who watched my other videos will know that's the moment to um to put the strobes on the line you've obviously
9:48
seen that I've already gone past the uh the strobe left by the first diver you can also just about see the uh the wreck
9:54
start below me there and it is it is looking really good so uh that's it my
10:00
strobes are coming out there they are the double strobe that I like to use and uh they're both going to go on the line
10:06
there be clipped on and uh that'll help me find my way back arguably not needed
10:11
on this dive but uh because the visibility is so good because the wreck is is so linear you know so intact that
10:18
it's easy to navigate around but obviously it's our protocol and uh so you know you follow it just in case you
10:25
need it right there we go I'm back on the uh on the scooter and and you can see me there heading down to the bottom
10:31
of the shot line now I was part of the first pair in and my job was actually to
10:36
uh to tie the waer onto the wreck so even though uh the other di is already
10:42
down here I still need to complete my part of the job so here I am coming up to the uh to the shotline you see that
10:48
blue bit of rope that is the waer so it's it's a thin piece of rope but it's
10:54
enough to hold the the shot into the wreck and as you can see I'm wrapping it around a big piece of
10:59
of metal there uh back around to the um to the to the shotline that that grapple
11:05
and then I'm going to tie it through the top of there and it'll be a bow line come the end of the dive the uh the
11:11
skipper will be able to uh put a bit of uh Power on the engine and basically uh
11:17
when he tries to lift the uh the shot up that will snap that waser and uh and then it will come free of the wreck so
11:24
I've done my roll the uh the shot Line's not going to come off the wreck so I'm back on my scooter to back and have a
11:29
look around and as you can see there is uh there's that winch it's clearly a
11:34
colier um there is coal everywhere you can see the outline of the holds um
11:40
really clearly there um you can see they're full of coal and uh oh there's a couple of
11:46
crayfish for those who like things there's there's a ladder that would have gone in and out of the hold and uh and
11:52
what I'm doing now is I'm making my way forward to to the bridge and the bow the shot is just uh just behind the engine
11:59
this is actually the uh the engine underneath all of this stuff here um as
12:04
I say this is my second dive on on this wreck so I've I've got my bearings really quickly uh beautiful port hole in
12:12
in front of me there um and uh you know you can see just how intact this wreck
12:18
is whole load more coal and a big Conger reel down in there fact congal
12:24
everywhere I think we're probably into double figures already so I'm just having a good look around this bit of
12:29
the wreck um you know just really I guess trying to find out a bit more
12:35
about it now this uh this hole here this is the the hatch where coal would be
12:40
loaded in for the wreck and you see there up in front of me is a binnacle but something else has caught my eye and
12:47
uh and flipp to the power lens now you can see me reaching in to pull it out it's uh it's a square shape clearly
12:54
brass bring it out and uh and as soon as I look at it I mean that is that is
13:00
bingo you know there is no doubt whatsoever what I've just found there you could see the N you could see the
13:05
year on it you could see 1914 you can see Engineers you can see a whole load of stuff I've been on the wreck less
13:12
than a couple of minutes and uh I found a maker's plate and and given where it is you know the engine's buried so this
13:18
has got to be the uh the ship's maker plate so I know instantly that what I've
13:24
done is found something that is going to identify this wreck we have uh we we've solve the mystery you know my heart is
13:30
going like an absolute rate of knots I've obviously you know I've had all that drama on the surface with the scooter falling apart and uh and I've
13:38
got underwater and almost instantly really that's what it seems anyway I
13:43
found a big old maker plate and uh that's going to go in my bag it's going to get clipped to me and I'm going to
13:49
bring that around with me for the rest of the dive keeping it nice and safe and sound because um I don't want to lose that that's uh that's the mystery solved
13:56
and and as soon as we get that to the surface we will know exactly uh exactly what this ship is so I'm I'm really
14:03
really chuffed at this point if nothing else happens on this dive I it's all been worthwhile it's been worth the sort
14:10
three or so hours to get out into the middle of the channel it's been worth nearly flooding my scooter nearly nearly
14:16
nearly losing it um it's h it's all great because you know frankly I love this kind of stuff so boom it's in the
14:23
bag back on me and uh yeah I'm going to pick up the scooter again and I'm going toh carry on with the rest of the
14:30
dive and as you can see there this is the uh this is the bridge area so I've just changed to my uh scooter Cam and
14:37
you probably saw I spotted something interesting there so I'm going in for the kill again and uh there's all sorts
14:43
of bits of broken plate and stuff around here there's that toilet obviously to the left and I just pull it out and you
14:48
can see there slightly disappointed that it's not a bit more intact but it it is a uh a kind of uh I don't know a large
14:55
plate or something like that um on the first dive I did find
15:00
a a Terin dish I guess you'd call it uh completely intact unfortunately no
15:06
shipping line markings or anything on it which is a bit disappointing anyway uh I'm on the move
15:13
again there's another diver to my left hand side uh I've just told him that
15:18
I've uh I found the maker plates um he's obviously very pleased for
15:23
me but there you go he's uh he's having he's having a look around so uh so here
15:29
I am cracking on now one of the things we uh we we thought on the first dive is we thought that some of the super
15:35
structure might have fallen off the side onto the seabed so this is what I'm doing now just uh just having a look
15:40
over onto the seabed and see if there's anything there and uh unfortunately as you can see there isn't there's just uh
15:47
lots of fish and lots of sand um great visibility loads of ambient light but
15:53
but nothing really to uh to see down there um it's always worth doing this I think with X just having a look over the
16:00
side you never know what what uh what might have fallen down but there you go I've I've had enough of that clearly and
16:06
there's the edge of the wreck you can see standing up uh really tall and it's it's one of the uh one of the kind of
16:13
unique things about this wreck not completely unique but certainly very rare is that it is almost it's upright
16:19
and intact most wrecks in the English Channel um collapse and fall down and uh
16:26
therefore all all that's left that's kind of upright is is the uh the boilers the um the engines sometimes the bow
16:34
sometimes the stern but um very rare that you get the complete shape of a ship which is what we've got on the
16:40
wreck so I'm I'm back basically where I was uh on the bridge area forward to the
16:46
towards the Bowers to my right towards the sterners to my left and what I'm doing is I'm just having a really good
16:52
look around this area obviously I found the uh the maker plate which you'd
16:57
expect to be on the bridge so maybe other stuff has fallen Fallen to the rear uh I can't see anything although
17:04
you know you can see there's another I guess uh there would have been a hatch or something there looking down into
17:10
what seems to be a coal bunker the engine is this area off to my left hand
17:15
side um completely covered in debris uh and those kind of
17:21
things um the reason I've not been using my uh my GoPro for this bit of the dive as you can see I just corrected the the
17:27
GoPro there it's it's it's kind of slightly kicked back so the uh the GoPro footage of this bit of the dive is is a
17:34
bit rubbish but there's loads of Port holes uh around here um if if Port Hol
17:39
are a thing this would definitely be a wreck to come and find one uh I'm not particularly interested in them but um
17:47
not least cuz you know almost all these Dives we do the recks are covered in them so this is this is the area after
17:53
of the engine um you know nothing nothing in here but you can see the kind
17:59
of decking down there that would have surrounded the engine you can see there's an oil box in fact there's two
18:04
oil boxes there there's kind of rectangular brass rectangular objects um
18:09
once again they they're associated with engines and there's another oil box so the engine's directly underneath where I
18:15
am at the moment and uh you know you just can't see it unfortunately oil boxes are used they would have been
18:22
filled with with oil obviously and then the oil travels from the oil box down to different parts of the engine that would
18:29
that would need lubricating and I think they these engines did use a lot of oil so they would have um that would have
18:35
been you know a regular task for the crew and everything another congal there you know there is there's just tons of
18:41
them all over this wreck in fact there's there's loads and loads of marine life I we've seen seen all sorts of things and
18:47
uh a few people sometimes comment on my videos are crayfish there bottom right hand side uh there you go you can see it
18:54
uh where you get one you always get lots more so there will be more around edible crab there
18:59
in in the hole and uh English Channel wrecks are covered in uh in marine life
19:05
they are uh absolute nurseries for uh for all sorts of marine life so um you
19:12
know great great for a healthy sea and all those kind of stuff and and also great if you fancy a crab or a lobster
19:17
for your dinner then uh there's there's normally one to be had um that's not what I'm looking for at the moment I'm
19:24
just looking for rather interesting artifacts and as you can see I'm taking my time
19:29
uh I have dived this wreck before as I think I've mentioned so I have been to the bow I did go to Stern on the first
19:35
dive so what I'm just doing now is is just taking my time and having a good look around um taking you know not
19:42
rushing things just you know sometimes things are slightly buried or only partially visible so um you know you
19:49
need to take the time to get your eye in and just to see if if there's anything there's that that binnacle that I saw
19:55
earlier on um and there's the uh all that big where all those congal are on
20:00
the left hand side that was where the the maker plate came out of so uh I'm just going back to another look at the
20:07
binnacle that's that's not a complete binnacle there's no uh Compass Bowl in there I don't know where that is I
20:13
didn't see it um and and the obviously I think the the stand of the compass ball
20:18
the the binnacle for this would have been made probably of uh probably of wood and therefore that's why it's not
20:24
there anymore it's rotted away um and and I'm just pulling it out to have a look at it not particularly interesting
20:31
um so I'm just going to going to leave it there it's obviously got something else stuck to it as well so uh
20:37
interesting but um not really worthy of of much further
20:42
attention so uh back on back on the scooter you can see the gopro's kicked up again so that's hence no GoPro
20:49
footage um it it is a problem with this setup is the GoPro is does easily get
20:55
knocked and therefore you end up with the um with kind of really rubbish footage so you got to got to stay on top
21:01
of it at this moment in time I'm more concentrating on the wreck than I am on anything else there's that toilet again
21:06
so this is the bridge area we've now moved forward of the bridge this is the uh the number two hold um as you can see
21:13
the the starboard side of it off to my right and I this is in this ho is where I found that um terine dish on the first
21:21
dive so I'm going I'm having a good look in here just to see if there's anything else in
21:26
here um you know my kind of suspicion is that stuff has fallen into here you know
21:31
part of the bridge perhaps um part of the galley if that um that uh terine
21:38
dish was there and this is this is where the terine dish was so I'm having a good look around and just seeing if there's
21:43
anything uh anything else in here and uh uh I haven't really found anything so
21:50
I'm going to move forward and uh the reason I'm moving forward is cu obviously the uh the Bell May well be up
21:58
here I did have a really good look for the Bell on the first dive so I'm pretty
22:03
convinced that if uh if it was there I would have found it but you know you never know this is the the forward Mast
22:11
um just broken off off to my left hand side there um masts obviously you know
22:17
potential location for a bell I I did spend a long time on the first dive looking looking around that Mast uh
22:24
didn't find anything and and this is me going forward again up to the bow and you can see there's someone else up here
22:29
as well um having a look for it everybody knows the Bell didn't come up on on the first dive nobody found it so
22:36
so this is absolutely you know what this diver is looking at uh somebody's found a bit a port hole window there that
22:42
they've they've brought out and put up on the wreck um but but no sign of uh no
22:47
sign of very much else obviously bow area as well often find lamp lockers so
22:52
you know there may well be brass lights and stuff in there someone's off the front of the bow uh my money's on that
22:59
bean Rick he he loves a good bow photo so um that's probably what he's doing in
23:06
the bow on this is really lovely it does stand up quite uh tall once again people who've watched my other videos will know
23:12
that I uh I like to pose for photos for Rick so um that's uh that's what I'm
23:18
going to do now um and you can see part of the bow has rotted away but but if I shine my video lights on the bow that
23:26
and and Rick takes a photo from a bit of a distance away that will uh that will look good so so there I am I mean while
23:32
I'm doing this one of the interesting things if you have a look a bit further down the the bow you can see there's actually a big crease in it near the
23:39
bottom and when we saw this on the first dive that that gave us a bit of a that
23:44
added a bit of evidence to our um thought that this might be the ma of SPC eye uh the ma of SP eye was sunk by a
23:52
collision so therefore we thought that may be evidence of the Collision um
23:57
actually the the H Yensen was was sunk by a a German sub submarine the ub-1 18
24:04
a very uh prolific submarine sunk over a 100 ships and uh on this day in
24:11
particular it sunk four vessels of which the Hans Yensen was one in fact the
24:16
survivors from the first vessel it sunk got onto another vessel that vessel was
24:23
it was then sunk by the ub-1 18 and while they were um evacuating waiting
24:28
from um or while they were getting off the that ship that was being sunk they
24:34
were able to watch the H Yensen being boarded and then uh the crew of the the
24:39
ub-1 18 sticking um explosive charges in the bottom of the the H Yensen and and
24:45
they blew out the bottom and and that's what ultimately sunk it so um you know incredible period of History where a
24:51
single submarine can sync four ships in a in a day and three of those four ships
24:57
were were decent size ships you know 2,000 tons that kind of things so uh you know makes a makes quite a big uh impact
25:04
on the war effort I'd have thought so um this is me here still uh you know I'm having a look on the seabed there I am
25:12
posing you know if Rick's still around there's the anchor he is so uh so Rick's still around so I'm still posing I'm
25:17
also looking inside uh inside the hull there you know maybe there's a a lamp Locker maybe there's uh the bells
25:23
falling in there who knows I'm just having taking my time having a good look around so uh no casualties on the Hans
25:29
Yensen was the good idea was was a good news no casualties on either of the other other two wrecks either so um
25:35
although it was a bad day for for shipping it was a good day for uh for human beings so you know that that side
25:42
of this story is is quite nice so uh you know often the wrecks that we dive have
25:48
got loss of life associated with them but uh but not today so the other di is cleared off so uh I'm just coming in and
25:54
having look at checking see if they've missed anything this is right at the front of the bow now so so the bow is
26:01
off to my left hand side the hold that you can see on the right is is the number one hold and you know as I've as
26:07
I've said you know what I'm doing is having a really good look in and around here just to see if there's anything but
26:13
there isn't all there is is lots of coal and and rotten um rotten beams and everything and there's you know you see
26:19
there's more divers clearly the the Bowers attracted other people as well so everyone's everyone's coming for a look
26:25
I think that's probably Rick on my right hand side he's some body else who has a big double video light setup like me um
26:33
people often ask why don't we why why why don't we use strobes um I mean I don't use strobes because I'm doing
26:38
videoing so video lights Mak sense um I think for Rick he doesn't tend to use
26:43
strobes either not least because um it's you just you take lots of photos and
26:50
then you uh you find the ones that that work best so this is back in between number one and number two holes um this
26:57
is the m P again you can see there's some sort of fixing just on the top of it there uh I don't know what what would
27:04
have gone on there um but doesn't look like it's the Bell that's for certain so
27:10
uh having a good look around here no Bell and uh uh that's disappointing but
27:16
I know that we've I know that we've got a name for this wreck because I know as soon as we get on the uh get on the
27:21
internet and uh search using the uh the details on the maker plate We Will We
27:26
Will name the wreck and uh and that's exactly what happened we we identified it within about uh 5 minutes of getting
27:32
mobile phone signal so uh it's incredible what information is available on the internet um and it's incredible
27:38
how easy it is to identify stuff if you've if you've got a maker plate so um they are uh they are wonderful things
27:46
and and you know lots of people will say actually finding a makers plate is better than finding a bell I'm not sure
27:53
I agree with them but um it's still pretty awesome finding uh finding one and and for me
27:58
uh this was actually the third one that I found this year so uh you know incredible and uh you know I've I've
28:06
never found any before so um it was it was really nice and I've got all three up on my wall next to each other memory
28:13
of a of a great year and two of those three were uh were able to identify the
28:18
reck as well so if you've not watched my my video about the SS Lucent that was one of the uh the maker plates that was
28:25
an engine makers plate and my other uh video uh sorry the other maker plate was off a
28:30
Rec called the clan McNab had been identified but um finding the maker
28:35
plate was obviously particularly nice and you can see what I found there is I found a bottle so um that's quite
28:41
interesting having a quick look at it and uh I have a quick look and uh at this moment in time I've seen there's a
28:48
cork in the top and I'm like wow I've got a bottle that's um that's not been cked what I uh what I don't realize is
28:53
actually the bottom has completely gone out of it so when I'm when I'm looking into it I'm looking inside and going wow
28:58
that is really clear the reason it's really clear is it's completely full of seawater so
29:04
um you bit uh bit foolish by me you see I'm still carrying it at the moment and
29:10
I don't realize for another minute or two that it's uh that it's uh it's not as exciting as I as I as I thought have
29:17
found um bottles on other reck um with the corks in um most of the time
29:23
obviously the the seawater has managed to get through the cork it's either rotted it or or pushed it in or whatever
29:30
um and and therefore you know the contents are all spoiled on one very memorable occasion we found a bottle of
29:36
champagne off a wreck in uh near the lizard and uh we it hadn't the seawater
29:43
hadn't got it inside it so it was um you know the as pure as the day it went down
29:49
the only thing was that um that champagne it would appear does not age very well so 100 odd year old champagne
29:57
uh tastes a awful and I would I would recommend strongly against drinking it
30:02
so anyway that's that's a bit of a digression you can see I'm I'm back in the area of the engine there's the
30:08
binnacle off the right hand side and and obviously the place that I found the maker plate um you know I'm just kind of
30:15
really I guess kicking the ass out of looking in this area um but it would it would actually be
30:23
really nice to see the engine it's it's under all that stuff to my left but it's just so buried I guess most of the super
30:30
structure has fallen in on top of the engine and and that's why we can't see it um but somewhere under there is
30:38
probably an engine maker plate um but but we're not finding it today I think
30:43
we probably the wreck needs to deteriorate a lot more before before it will that will open up and uh and
30:49
somebody gets a chance of finding that so uh yeah I'm just taking taking
30:55
the time and having a good look around but realistically I'm I'm kind of I can't have that long
31:01
left on this dive so the other advantage to being here is is obviously it's quite close to the uh the shotline and the
31:07
shotline as we uh as I make it clear on my other videos is is my way home so
31:13
it's not a bad place to be near the shot and uh you just taking my time looking
31:18
at a an area of the wreck where there's all sorts of interesting bits and pieces to find I mean it is I'm loving this
31:25
dive because of the visibility because of the ambient light because obviously the makers plate but also because it is
31:32
a wreck that is so um intact and it's that's such for us
31:39
anyway in the UK such a rarity I know people in places like the uh the black
31:44
SE sorry the uh Baltic and I know in you know the great lakes and everything they
31:50
they get used to diving wrecks that are um that are really intact just don't get
31:56
that in in the English Channel in the UK I think it's more you get it in the North Sea but I've I don't really do
32:02
much diving over there so um I I'm used to Rex being flat and broken so this is
32:08
a real a real pleasure and uh I'm I'm making the most out of it not least
32:13
because I'm unlikely ever to come back here again if I'm coming 50 mil out
32:18
there's a whole load of other wrecks around here that need diving and so I'm going to do those before I before I do
32:24
this one so uh I'm I'm making the most of it my my uh well almost certainly be
32:29
my last dive on the uh on a Hans Yensen but it is a cker and uh I'd strongly
32:36
recommend it if anybody else fancies Nate odd me to dive on a completely intact shipwreck and uh you know one
32:43
with it with an interesting story somewhere around here of course are those other wrecks that I mentioned the other two that were sunk by ub-1 18 on
32:50
the same day and also they're made of spet I so um none of those have been found so there's there's a whole load
32:56
more exploration that needs to to be done out here around here and uh you know I guess I'll be trying to do it
33:03
trying to find a few of those other wrecks but you know if other people do it it'd be great you know the more of
33:09
these Mysteries that get solved uh the better I uh I just love it so uh really
33:17
close to the uh to the shotline now after the engine uh this is another cargo hold here uh you can see there
33:24
there's there's you know more coal this is probably the number three hold uh this would have had four holds um
33:30
another diver off to my left hand side there and uh all the sort of bits and
33:35
pieces that have that have fallen down uh there's that winch saw right at the beginning of the dive uh another diver
33:43
and uh another the rear Mast there not not particularly interesting there wouldn't be a bell on that one so uh no
33:49
point spending much time there's a big Ling um fisherman would be extremely happy if he caught that Ling I'm sure
33:56
it's obviously never seen a diver before it's been really chilled another crayfish uh some sort of rainbow Rass or
34:03
whatever there beautiful colored colored fish there's you know just tons of these things down here um and uh yeah I'm I'm
34:12
kind of getting really close to the to the end of my dive admiring that Ling
34:19
totally chilled really really um relaxed there's another diver uh that's my mate
34:25
Paul he's he's been on a a few of the videos he's got a he's got a lovely helmet like me and he's got his power
34:31
lens M mounted on it so he'll know that have some decent footage of the this dive as
34:37
well uh yeah there's the edge of that number three cargo hold and there is the
34:42
there's a shot line with a diver starting head head up that's uh that's Jace he's uh this was his first dive on
34:49
this wreck I know he had a he had an absolute cker he uh I'm going to beat
34:55
him up and I'm going to go up and I'm grabbing my strobe and that's the uh the end of my end of my bottom time then
35:02
there's my double strobes hanging on uh you tell they're mine they got my green tape on it I've still got my bottle with
35:08
me uh haven't quite twigged that it's uh that it's that I'm wasting my time because the bottom is has completely
35:15
come out of it at this moment in time I'm still thinking that I'm going to be drinking more champagne on the surface or something I don't know but um
35:22
anyway uh there I am I'm I've got my strobes and uh I'm bidding farewell to
35:28
the H Yensen and uh I'm accelerating up the uh up the uh up the shot line
35:33
heading for the uh the lazy shot so one of the things I like to do is to get off the bottom really quickly
35:40
and I do tend to uh accelerate you know go up really quickly the first well it
35:46
depends on the depth really but the first 25% of the bottom I guess um and
35:52
there you go you can see there's a shotline there some other people's strobes and here I go uh heading up
35:59
there you can see I'm venting from the loop getting rid of all the gas that's how come there's a load of bubbles
36:04
surrounding around me and you can see just how beautiful the conditions are look at the um look at the bless of the
36:10
water really unusual you know normally the our Dives everything is green but today everything is blue which is just
36:17
uh just wonderful and uh here here here I come up I'm I'm going to cut it fairly
36:23
soon uh cut to the uh show you a bit of My Deco and then I'm going to finish up with the dolphins but at the moment just
36:30
just to you know marvel at how wonderful the uh the vi is how how clear the water
36:36
is and you know how fantastic conditions are so you see they're looking down the uh down the shotline at all those
36:42
strobes just see see how clear it is um that's me starting to uh I've turning my
36:49
torch off I'm now going to fast forward a bit so I've taken my lazy tag I'm I'm
36:54
above the um uh the cross for the for the lazy shot and you can see what I'm doing
37:00
there is I'm just changing the uh the set point on my uh uh handset on my rebreather so put it up to 1.5 to
37:06
accelerate The Deco and I'm just going to do the same thing on my uh my Shear water for my Standalone so that's going
37:13
to go up to 1.5 as well obviously this will uh just make sure that my uh if if
37:18
there's a problem with the decompression calculation on my um rebreather it'll uh it'll have the same uh understanding of
37:26
what my decompression obligation still is so the other item other thing I need to do is just sort out my scooter and
37:32
you can see here this is me I'm on my decompression and there you can see a diver below me near the uh near the the
37:39
PRC and where the lazy shot joins the main shot uh we're waiting for someone to release it I'm I'm at my Deco stop so
37:46
I'm just tidying up my uh scooter folding all the arms in and then I'll clip it off on my Reb brether I don't
37:52
need it during The Deco and it'll just uh it'll just be kind of out of the way keeping everything uh as tidy as
37:58
possible having said that I did then take my uh I did then use the scooter to
38:05
to take this bit of video these are all the this is after we've released the lazy shot we're all decompressing and
38:10
then hopefully you can see that we got buzzed by Dolphins I turned the parall lenss off by then so this uh I didn't
38:17
get any any video from uh any head mounted video so this is all this is all off the GoPro but you can see there I
38:24
mean that's it's just wonderful when you see Dolphins uh you know this close and
38:30
they're clearly inquisitive they're clearly coming around to have a look at us they clearly want to know what's going on uh you can see there they
38:36
they're popping up for for a breath of air but but the three of them still down staying with us and having a good look
38:42
around and then they uh they head off into the Gloom and uh I've got no more
38:47
video after this which is a real pity but it was a an incredible special incredibly special moment I'm going to
38:54
finish up though with h with a few more of Rick's photos this first one is him looking up the uh
39:00
up the lazy shot showing all the divers above him and uh and you know shows how
39:05
cracking the water is next one is our uh our return journey home always pleased
39:12
to see this when you get to the surface great team at inep who allow us to do this kind of diving penultimate photo
39:18
shows the entire team the people who made this happen actually no freyer on this photo I think she took it but she
39:25
was a really important part of it as well so anyway hope you've enjoyed this
39:30
video and uh I hope you'll uh you'll watch some more of mine okay thank you
