0:00
so I thought I'd use this format to
0:02
share with you some really exciting news
0:04
about my diving plans for this weekend
0:07
those of you who watch some of my other
0:08
videos will know that we have a long
0:10
running project to go and find the US
0:12
Coast Guard tamper now the great news is
0:16
that we're off this weekend to have
0:17
another go at looking at at it for it
0:19
and we got a new Fresh Target so um I'm
0:22
going to tell you all about that uh in a
0:25
bit but before I do that I just want to
0:27
let you know a couple of other things
0:28
that I'm going to talk about first thing
0:30
is to uh let you know what my two videos
0:33
that I'm going to produce this uh this
0:34
week are the first one is I'm going to
0:36
do an unboxing for this beautiful little
0:39
Ora torch d710 you may have seen me
0:42
using it on the Scala dive that I uh
0:44
that I've just finished but um yeah I'm
0:46
really excited going to do an unboxing
0:48
video and there's an opportunity in that
0:50
uh to win that not that particular one
0:53
but an identical one um so anyway more
0:55
details about that uh in a bit and the
0:59
other thing I'm going to talk about is
1:00
my third uh video this week which is
1:03
going to be uh a dive on the glass wck
1:06
the glass wck is actually proper name is
1:08
a Charwood very famous local dive around
1:11
here it's uh it was a iron hold sailing
1:14
ship sunk in the 19th century absolutely
1:17
ladened with as you might imagine glass
1:19
so uh anyway more about that once again
1:22
further on in this podcast before I I
1:25
crack on though and tell you about the
1:26
tamper dive I just want to say uh some
1:28
thank yous and the first first thing I
1:30
want to do is say thank you to the
1:31
people who've gone to the buy me a
1:33
coffee website and handed over some of
1:35
their hard-earned cash um I I just I
1:38
really appreciate that it's a lovely
1:40
thing to do and um I'll use it obviously
1:42
to to to fund my diving uh uh diving
1:46
Expeditions and obviously the content
1:47
from that will come on this channel and
1:49
you get to be able to see it so so
1:51
particularly want to say thank you to
1:52
Eric stot and Eric I love all the
1:54
questions you asked me on my channel
1:56
that's absolutely brilliant thank you
1:58
Patrick bird once again really love
2:00
those photos that you sent me from uh
2:02
from diving in the Great Lakes really
2:04
appreciate that thank you very much and
2:06
Frankie cheu um once again another big
2:08
thank you to you as well my friend so um
2:11
that's brilliant the other people I'd
2:13
like to thank is basically everybody who
2:14
watches my channel everybody who's
2:16
subscribed everyone who's liked everyone
2:19
who's shared everyone who's commented
2:20
whatever you've done because um it's
2:22
just been incredible we've you know it's
2:25
I've gone over 9,000 subscribers
2:26
yesterday I've gone over uh 9,000
2:30
uh sorry 900,000 views on my videos and
2:34
I've gone over a 100,000 hours of of
2:36
watch watching you know people watching
2:38
my videos I mean those numbers are just
2:40
mindboggling and when I started this I
2:42
had nowhere no idea that I was going to
2:44
get any anywhere close to those things
2:46
so all of you have made that happen so
2:48
so thank you very much when you're doing
2:50
this when you're making a video you've
2:52
got no idea if anybody's going to watch
2:53
it or not and uh to to get those kind of
2:56
numbers to see all the comments and all
2:58
those sorts things just just is
3:00
incredible for my own validation and uh
3:02
you know makes me want to carry on doing
3:04
it frankly so um so thank you very much
3:07
to all of you so that's a picture of the
3:09
US Coast Guard tamper and that's the
3:12
vessel that we're going to look for this
3:13
weekend we've had loads of goes at
3:16
looking for it we've dived all sorts of
3:17
marks and if you have a look at some of
3:19
my videos the one about the LCT for
3:22
instance that was uh when we were
3:24
looking for the Tampa we found we found
3:25
that instead and there's a whole load of
3:27
other ones so it's it's a Target that
3:30
we've been searching for for ages and
3:32
when I say we've been searching for it
3:34
it's actually the Gasper dive team which
3:37
is basically centered around Steve and
3:39
Barbara Mortimer they've found loads and
3:42
loads of recks around the UK barbs is a
3:44
fabulous researcher Steve brings a team
3:46
together we all get we're lucky enough
3:48
to be part of the team um so that's it's
3:51
Gasper's dive team we're looking for the
3:53
looking for the Tempa this is our third
3:55
or maybe fourth year in a row when we've
3:57
been looking for it so what is the
3:59
tamper right the Tampa was a US Coast
4:02
Guard vessel that was sunk on the 26th
4:05
of September 1918 by the German
4:08
submarine UB 91 it's uh I think
4:12
surprising to many of us that the US
4:14
Coast Guard were actually here in the uh
4:17
in the UK protecting convoys uh
4:20
escorting them trying to SN German
4:22
submarines whereas I guess most people
4:24
would assume that would be a job for the
4:26
Navy but the US Coast Guard didn't feel
4:29
that at the time so they had they had
4:31
tamper over here and when Tampa went
4:33
down she went down with 111 members of
4:36
the Coast Guard on board four US Navy
4:39
guys and then 16 passengers 11 of whom
4:42
were Brits and five of whom were
4:44
civilians and this was a huge loss of
4:46
life at the time it was even more than
4:48
we on the Jacob Jones uh the United
4:51
States ship Jacob Jones if you've not
4:52
seen my video on that I I definitely
4:54
recommend it so it was a really seminal
4:57
moment for for quite a Young Nation at
4:59
the time so the US Coast Guard have
5:02
always kept a vessel called tamper in
5:05
service ever since and you can go on
5:07
their website you can see they're really
5:08
proud of their history they they
5:10
consider this a really important part of
5:13
of it so um but nobody's been able to
5:15
find it so we're going to going and have
5:17
another look for it and you go yeah
5:20
great obviously you dive loads of
5:21
targets um you know yeah fantastic well
5:25
this time uh Barbara who's our
5:27
researcher is really really confident
5:30
that she's found it she's gone away and
5:32
looked at the primary archives again
5:35
she's realized that that the searches
5:38
that have been done in the past
5:39
including by uh by us and the gasparatos
5:42
um have not looked in the right area so
5:45
she's looking for she's looking for
5:47
something and she thinks she's found it
5:49
now because the tamper was quite small
5:51
and the torpedo that hit it was so big
5:54
there's not going to be very much of it
5:55
left so it was only 60 M long the
5:58
torpedoed supposedly blew it in half
6:01
that was a report from the Germans so
6:02
therefore we're looking for a relatively
6:04
small wreck that's in at least two
6:07
pieces so um and we know it's a long way
6:10
out so this is going to be 90 95 M deep
6:13
uh and 50 odd miles away from Shore so
6:15
it's going to be it's going to be a
6:17
really big dive and those are the kind
6:19
of Dives that we've been doing in the in
6:20
the past while we're looking for it so
6:23
uh you know it's it's it's I'm really
6:27
excited by it because you know barbar so
6:30
confident that she's found it this time
6:32
um and um you know we found so many
6:34
other interesting things while we we
6:36
we've looked for the tamper in the past
6:37
and obviously if we do find the tamper
6:40
it is going to be an absolutely amazing
6:42
achievement and almost certainly we'll
6:44
make uh headlines around the world
6:46
certainly I would imagine in the United
6:48
States so um that is this weekend's plan
6:51
and um obviously um you know we're in
6:54
that cycle now um it's Monday um we're
6:59
going to meet up there on Friday we've
7:01
got an Airbnb booked then it'll be an
7:03
early start on Saturday and another
7:05
early start on Sunday uh if we find it
7:07
we might dive it twice and if we don't
7:09
find it we're we're probably going to
7:11
have a go another Target but um so we're
7:13
all planning we're all waiting and
7:15
obviously the key thing we need now is
7:18
confirmation from the skipper that the
7:20
weather's okay we're diving with a guy
7:22
called Chris low and his boat Atlantic
7:24
diver now he is uh it's out of new on
7:28
the North Coast of Devon um he is the
7:31
guy who has done everything out of new
7:33
for the past 20 odd years 20 30 years
7:36
he's um a fisherman by background his
7:38
son's a fisherman he's absolutely
7:40
steeped in the local uh conditions so if
7:43
anybody is going to get us on it it is
7:45
going to be Chris and if anybody's going
7:46
to make the right call about the weather
7:48
and all those kind of things it's going
7:49
to be Chris so um now often with this
7:53
kind of diving people don't um don't you
7:56
know publicize what they're going to do
7:57
people don't put it out there but um
8:00
I've spoken to Steve and Barbs about
8:01
this and they're very happy for me to do
8:03
this podcast and to tell you that we're
8:04
going to go and look for it all being
8:07
well this weekend so what I'd like you
8:09
all to do please is is is whatever you
8:11
do if you keep your fingers crossed if
8:13
you say a prayer um if you um I don't
8:16
know sacrifice animals whatever it is
8:18
you do if you could do it please for
8:20
this weekend so uh so we get the weather
8:22
and and we get on that Mark that is a
8:24
tamper it would be absolutely amazing um
8:28
so yeah thank you very much and keep
8:30
everything crossed so that's the first
8:32
thing I wanted to talk to you about on
8:34
this uh on this podcast so the second
8:36
thing I wanted to talk to you about is
8:39
the unboxing video that I'm going to do
8:40
on Friday now those of you who watched
8:43
my recent dive on the Scala will see
8:44
that I had one of these things down
8:46
there with me these little orcatorch
8:49
d710s um guy very kindly sent me them I
8:52
sent me one to kind of do an unboxing
8:54
video on now I actually had one already
8:56
because I love orcatorch stuff so um you
8:59
know really really happy to kind of give
9:01
my um seal of approval to uh you know
9:05
products that I use um and and that I
9:07
find good so um he's actually sent me
9:09
this though so this is a brand new one
9:12
and I'm going to do an unboxing video on
9:14
that one and um I'm not going to use it
9:17
what I'm going to do is offer uh
9:19
somebody the opportunity to win this
9:22
orcatorch um and that'll be a part of
9:25
the video on Friday will be how you can
9:27
win this so uh yeah uh stay tuned and
9:30
you know good luck hopefully uh you well
9:32
somebody some lucky person is going to
9:34
get one of those little orcatorch d710s
9:37
um and if you want what I've done is
9:39
I've put in the chat um a link to to
9:41
where you can go on to the website for
9:43
the guy who sells these things and
9:44
there's actually a voucher on there as
9:46
well so uh he knocked going to knock 20
9:48
quid off for people who watch um this
9:51
channel so uh it's got to be a good
9:53
thing I guess so uh the third thing I
9:56
said I was going to talk to you about
9:57
was the Charwood also known uh around
10:01
here as the glass wreck it's uh out by
10:03
the Edon Lighthouse so not super far out
10:06
not super deep 60 M really really well
10:09
dived and the reason it's been really
10:11
well dived is because obviously that
10:12
that 60 m is a great depth for people
10:15
who are uh starting to get into
10:16
technical diving it's also it's only
10:19
sort of 13 or 14 miles out so it's quite
10:21
close as well so you don't need to do a
10:23
massive day out to go and dive there and
10:26
in the past I've even combined a dive on
10:28
that for a technical dive with a dive on
10:30
on a nearby Reef called hand deep for um
10:34
for some recreational divers as well so
10:36
it's it's a lovely dive and the thing
10:38
about it is the reason it's it's called
10:41
The Glass wreck is because it was
10:42
carrying glass from uh somewhere on the
10:45
conent I think to Chile now it wasn't
10:47
particularly expensive glass you know
10:49
this isn't Waterford Crystal or anything
10:50
like this this is fairly uh cheap
10:53
everyday everyday glass in fact uh
10:55
here's an example of one of the things
10:57
that I found on it in the past that's a
11:00
kind of decanter I guess you know wine
11:02
maybe or pork or something like that
11:03
would have uh would have had in it and
11:05
there's a there's a stopper for it so
11:07
obviously that's uh oops a nice thing to
11:09
have and you also get kind of lots of
11:12
other bits and pieces you know these
11:13
kind of things as well so um loads of
11:16
nice bits and pieces on on the childwood
11:18
and uh on its day when conditions are
11:20
right it can be an absolutely wonderful
11:22
dive so that is the uh the dive that I'm
11:24
going to produce and publish on Sunday
11:27
so hopefully you found this podcast
11:29
interesting my plan is to do more of
11:32
these probably on a Monday and I'll I'll
11:35
be covering a whole raft of things in
11:36
them um like this one maybe talk about
11:39
my my diving plans maybe not just for
11:42
the week ahead but for also um the year
11:45
ahead so I think probably what I'll do
11:46
next Monday is talk you to you about the
11:48
trips that I've got planned but I'm also
11:50
going to use it uh these podcasts to
11:52
have kind of General discussions about
11:53
things so I get I get lots of kind of
11:56
comments in the feedback uh sorry feed I
11:58
get lots of comments people saying
12:00
things like you know how did you get
12:01
into technical diving um you know what
12:04
was your path um you know what's your
12:06
background so I'll maybe cover a bit of
12:08
those kind of things I'll also uh talk
12:11
you know about my thoughts on on a few
12:12
different things like you know how um if
12:15
you want to get into rebreathers what
12:16
you should do uh maybe talk about some
12:18
safety stuff uh a bit about the mindset
12:21
those kind of things and uh just some
12:24
general thoughts on uh on the diving
12:26
industry so that's what I'm going to
12:27
hope to do with these podcasts different
12:29
format to to the videos that I normally
12:32
do uh I hope you all uh you enjoy them I
12:36
hope you find they work for you I mean
12:38
obviously what I would love to do as
12:39
always is get your comments tell me you
12:42
know what you want me to talk about tell
12:43
me what you'd like to hear more about or
12:45
less about uh and as always please you
12:47
know uh if you could support me by
12:49
giving me a like or uh sharing it those
12:52
kind of things are just really super
12:53
helpful so uh so thank you very much and
12:57
uh fingers crossed for this weekend
