Mathieu van der Poel has been spotted on a new unreleased 2026 Canyon road bike but is it a new canyon aeroad or canyon ultimate? We wade in with our theory. We also dive deeper in to RedBull's aero testing designed to help make pro cyclists Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic even faster in 2026. New carbon road bike wheels from DT Swiss and a new e-road bike from Scott.

What on earth do bubbles, lasers and bats have to do with cycling
0:05
And how could they make Primoz Roglic and Remko Evanapol even quicker in 2026
0:11
Van der Poel has been spotted on a new bike from Canyon, but what actually is it
0:15
And new tech from SRM, Q36.5, DT Swiss and Scott. This is Cycling Weekly, let's get into it
0:23
We'll start with this, a rather blurry screen capture from Matteo van der Poel's autumn training camp in Spain
0:30
But look closely and not all is as it seems. Compared to Fredi Ovette's bike next to him, there's definitely some noticeable differences
0:39
including this Y-shaped cockpit, more tyre clearance and a different seat stay arrangement
0:46
It certainly does look like it could be an all-new Canyon Aeroad
0:50
But as the latest Aeroad CFR only released last summer, is it really time for an update
0:57
One possible theory is that this isn't a new Aeroad at all, and rather a new Ultimate
1:02
which is more likely due an update based on previous timelines. The Aeroad is the go-to race bike for Canyon-sponsored teams on all terrains, it seems
1:11
so the Ultimate in its current guise is losing relevance. Could Canyon's solution be to make it more Aero
1:18
If so, then this raises the question, what of the Aeroad? Well, I reckon it would open the door to go full radical
1:26
Canyon has the know-how from its track and TT bike, so if the Ultimate became the all-rounder race bike
1:32
maybe the Aeroad could go head-to-head with the latest crop of full-on Aero bikes
1:37
such as that Factor prototype and the Colnago Y1RS. We'll keep you updated as and when we see more
1:44
so make sure you're subscribed to the channel and let us know what you think about our theory in the comments below
1:52
From blurry spy shots to a dark tunnel in the depths of the UK
1:56
this is Catsby, a disused railway tunnel that's now used for aerodynamic testing
2:02
Its latest visitors? Dan Bigham, Red Bull Borahansgrohe and Tom from Cycling Weekly
2:09
It's safe to say that Tom wasn't expecting what he saw next
2:12
Out came some bubble machines, chalk spray, and lasers powerful enough to light a cigarette
2:18
all with the aim of validating the CFD, or that's computational fluid dynamics
2:24
that the team has already been doing. This is particle imaging velocimetry
2:30
Velocimetry? Velocimetry. Velocimetry Velocimetry That does sound good but it got a C not an S This is particle imagery velocimetry or PIV So how does it work Well there more to those bubbles than meets the eye
2:45
They're actually helium-filled and meticulously created to be exactly 0.3 millimetres in diameter
2:53
Bigum then repeatedly rode through the bubbles, and thanks to the lasers and eight cameras
2:57
they can then capture the wake behind him and how the air is working. What they then do is compare
3:05
it to their CFD model on the computer to check that it's accurate. Dan Biggum has long said that
3:12
you can't see aero, but maybe he's devised a way in which you can. So why do they have to spray the
3:18
frames I hear you ask? Well the chalk spray was used liberally not only on the bike but also on
3:24
to ensure that what was captured in the images was the actual data and not a reflection
3:31
A hundred runs later and a shed load of ysis and apparently the CFD does check out
3:35
Apparently this is the first in the world of cycling but with Red Bull investing up to 12
3:40
days a month in Catsby Tunnel during the winter it's unlikely to be the last
3:46
You've heard of Q36.5 before, they make some very nice Italian clothing and footwear
3:51
you've heard of SRM, the creators of the first commercial power meter, and together they've come
3:57
up with these. A set of ultra low stack height pedals that contrary to popular belief have nothing
4:04
to do with the power meter. In typical Italian fashion the brand calls their new system revolutionary
4:09
but what's the benefit of low stack height? Well Q36.5 says that these offer the most direct
4:16
pedalling feel ever. Not only that, but this evolutionary leap in pedalling performance
4:21
reduces stack height by over 8mm compared to existing 3-volt pedal and shoe combinations
4:28
which translates into more direct power transfer, a snappier race feel, and the potential for
4:33
improved efficiency in every pedal stroke. Obviously, we haven't been able to validate
4:38
any of this yet, but they should be available to you and I from December 4th for what I imagine
4:44
will be a very high price tag. Oh, and Q36.5, they've been busy
4:49
They've also released their Foul Weather Racing Collection, which has been designed to fill the needs
4:54
of Tom Pidcock and his teammates. This one is called the Rainshell Aero jersey
5:00
aka the condom. That's not my words, that's theirs. So would you wear..
5:05
So would you wear a Johnny-like Pidcock on your rides? Let me know in the comments below
5:14
Right new wheels next and they from wheel giant DT Swiss these aren just any new wheels though because this is a first for the brand they got carbon spokes what this means is that nearly
5:27
everyone is now in agreement well cycling brands anyway they need to offer carbon spoke wheels in
5:33
their lineup to continue to hit those desired weights speaking of weight these weigh in at
5:38
under 1200 grams, are 38mm deep and have been developed to work with the Aero 111 tyre for a
5:45
complete wheel system. You can still load them up with 110kg but rather interestingly they've got
5:51
Vanilla spokes, by far the most popular brand of carbon spokes, but I must admit I sort of thought
5:58
that the delay in DT Swiss releasing a carbon spoked wheel was because they were developing their
6:04
own. Apparently not. The new wheelset certainly looks good right up until you see that the rim
6:09
width is 20mm. Yep, 20. Just 20. Maybe it's a typo first because it is a lot less than other wheels
6:18
in this segment and they cost £2,899 or $3,727. I don't know what planet you'd have to be on to
6:28
buy them at that price. That's obscene. Honestly, if you choose these, then I don't know what you're
6:34
on. Ignore all the brilliant Chinese options if you want, but how can anyone possibly justify
6:40
these ARC 1100s over, let's say, a set of Newman streams? They're the same depth, two millimetres
6:46
wider internals, 100 grams lighter, the same Vanilla carbon spokes, still hooked rims
6:53
They're less than half the price. I'll leave you to do the maths on that one
6:58
now you might remember a few months ago i took my mum on her longest bike ride ever
7:05
if you missed it there's a link up there but spoiler she dropped me on a hill it was mainly
7:12
thanks to this tq systems hpr40 mid-drive motor a small lightweight motor that canyon rather
7:19
cleverly packed into its on-fly endurance well it's just got a competitor because now scott has
7:26
put the same e-bike motor into their own bike. It's called the Fastlane. Scott says that its new
7:32
bike turns mountain passes into gentle hills while combining pure road bike feel, freedom
7:37
and aesthetics with just the right boost of extra power. That's 200 watts, by the way
7:42
I must admit, I do think it looks really good. There's three models. They're all carbon fibre
7:47
The frame fork is certainly really lightweight It 1 kilos which is well up there with all the competition they take three hours to charge to 100 So what do you reckon best looking e yet let me know in the comments below what do you think about the name ed fast lane
8:02
no comment no comment i'd say that's a middling name whether you ride a commuter a road bike a gravel bike or a mountain bike this video has been brought
8:14
to you by the insurance emporium if you're considering getting your bike insured or perhaps
8:19
want to explore another provider, the Insurance Emporium is well worth checking out. They have a
8:24
de facto five-star rating, a Trust Pilot score of excellent, and a FIFO Platinum Trusted Service
8:31
You can cover up to six bikes on one policy, all of which can be protected from things like theft
8:37
loss, or accidental damage. Having anything bad happen to your pride and joy is always painful
8:42
but with an insurance policy, you can at least mitigate some of that heartache by knowing that
8:47
someone has your back. Especially when they offer new for old for life so that you can replace your
8:52
bike with a new one of similar value should it be stolen, lost or accidentally damaged. If you'd
8:58
like to check them out then there's a link down below and there's also details of how to take
9:02
advantage of up to 20% off. Now before we get on to some of the latest news from the Pro Peloton
9:11
I thought I'd draw your attention to this because as you know we review all sorts of stuff over on
9:17
on the Cycling Weekly website, but it's very, very rare that we ever give anything full marks
9:22
Things just aren't that good. Well, it's happened. The new sportful Fiandra Shift jacket
9:28
has scored that elusive five out of five stars. This is particularly good news
9:32
as when it was announced that PFAS materials would be banned, many of us thought that cycling jackets
9:39
were just going to be a lot worse. Apparently not. Politech's Aircore technology has taken it one step further
9:46
and this is a jacket that looks absolutely ideal for well this time of year or early spring. We'll
9:52
probably link to it down in the description below. And we finish with some news from the
9:57
pro peloton. You've probably seen that Premier Tech has said its position as sponsor of Israel
10:01
Premier Tech is untenable even with a name change but you might not have heard the rumours that they
10:08
could be joining Alpsin in place of De Kernig. Now we're not sure how much truth there is behind
10:14
this but it certainly does seem plausible oh and also apparently cube to total energies and the
10:21
lotto intermarche wanty whatever their merge team is called they're apparently going to stick with
10:27
orbea bikes that lotto are currently on there you go that's all you need to know make sure you like
10:32
comment and subscribe and we'll see you next time
