0:00
So you're looking for places to stay in Maui and everywhere that you're looking you're really just
0:04
finding hotels in Maui, Maui resorts, or Maui vacation rentals. But did you know that there
0:10
are actually five other styles of lodging available on Maui? Something for every budget
0:15
something for every lifestyle and experience that you want to have? Well today we are going to talk
0:19
about all of the lodging options, most especially those other five that nobody else is talking about
0:24
So are you ready? Let's go. All right before I dive into all of the types I just want to cover
0:28
briefly what is considered low and high season on Maui. Now you might already know this if you've
0:33
already been researching your vacation to Maui, but I'm going to cover it really briefly in case
0:37
you haven't. So everything is governed by whether it is low season or high season. Pricing can
0:43
fluctuate wildly depending on the type of season that you're in. So for Hawaii, low season is
0:48
typically late August once kids start going back to school up until about mid-December when
0:54
everybody starts taking a break for the holidays with a little caveat for Thanksgiving, which
0:58
would make it a little mini high season and then you can also find it again in the spring after
1:05
spring break so say mid to late april up until late june when kids get out of school again those
1:12
are the low seasons high seasons are going to be christmas or the holiday season so mid-december
1:19
through about mid-january uh you have a tiny tiny tiny little window of some low season in there but
1:26
then you start with all of the Martin Luther King holiday and President's holiday, which actually
1:30
go back up in our considered high season. So high season really kind of goes through spring break
1:35
and then it picks back up again late June through late August or mid-August because that is when
1:41
all the kids are out of school and that's when everybody wants to travel. So just know your
1:45
wet season you're going and then that can help you to gauge what price range you might encounter
1:51
All right, so with that being said, let's go ahead and jump into number one, camping. Now
1:54
there are actually 10 campgrounds available on Maui, but I want to focus on two primary ones
1:59
because they are the ones most talked about and they offer you some really cool options as far
2:04
as camping. But just know I'm going to link it below. You can actually explore other campgrounds
2:09
as well and you might find one that you like better. Okay, the first one I want to talk to
2:13
you about is Waianapanapa. It's a state park. It is over in Hana and it is very close to the beach
2:20
a black sand beach it has lots of hiking it has some food you have all that hana has to offer
2:26
waterfall hikes and things of that nature they actually have some really cool options not only
2:31
can you tent camp but you can also rent a cabin and you can also bring a camper van i'll talk
2:38
about the camper vans in just a minute but let's go ahead and talk about some of the pricing you
2:42
will encounter when you're camping here so like i said this location is right near the beach and
2:47
and you're hiking and you're everything, it's in Hana, so it's not going to be the main beaches
2:52
like crowds that you have on Kaanapali or Wailea. This is going to be a little bit more remote
2:56
And again, the black stand is so cool to see in person and you'd be right next to it
3:02
So if you wanted to tent camp, you can either bring your own if you have a lot of camping that
3:07
you do and you have your own gear, or you can rent gear in Maui and then take it with you to
3:12
the campsite. Now the campsite itself is about $30 and that can accommodate up to 10 people
3:19
Now I did find some evidence also that the state park itself might charge a $5 entry fee for
3:25
non-residents and they might charge you a $10 parking fee. But if you're camping there
3:30
I don't know if that $10 can be part of that $30 that you're paying for camping
3:35
but do make sure that before you go to go and check it out and find out what the situation is
3:40
as far as extra fees go. So that's tent camping. But you also have the option to take to rent a cabin
3:47
Cabins are only $100 per night for non-residents. Now, I know $100 isn't technically cheap
3:53
but for a cabin at an amazing place, I think it's actually pretty reasonable
3:57
especially on Maui. We're not talking luxury cabins with all the amenities
4:01
We're talking more rustic cabins. But it is a unique way to camp on Maui
4:08
in Hana and near all that that has to offer. The other thing that you could do is you can
4:13
actually rent a camper van, like an old style VW camper van or a minivan that has a pop-up roof
4:19
those type of things. You can rent them in Maui and then drive it and stay in this
4:24
campground as well. Now, if you bring your own camper van, the cost for that is $30 per night
4:30
for up to six people. And then plus, of course, the fees for the camper van itself. Also, a lot
4:36
of the state parks require a permit before entry not all of them have fees
4:40
some of them are free but you still need to have a permit so before you head to
4:43
your campground or before you head to Maui make sure you're you're looking at this website which I'll link below to make sure you've got everything that you
4:50
need before you head and start your camping adventure on Maui all right the other campground I want to talk to you about is Hosmer and I apologize to all
4:57
my Hawaiian friends if I am saying that wrong the Hosmer is actually up on the
5:00
the hills of Haleakala. So Hosmer is at a 7,000 foot elevation. So think colder, think more rain
5:08
but also you're on the slopes of Haleakala. So it's still amazingly beautiful and a really fun
5:13
experience. And also when you make a reservation to stay in Hosmer, you actually get your permit
5:18
to be able to watch the sunrise from Haleakala the next morning, which is something that you have
5:24
to have a permit to be able to do. So it's really cool that you can build this into your camping
5:28
experience. One cool thing about Hosmer, if you're staying on the hills of Haleakala
5:32
you're already at a high enough elevation that if you are a stargazer at all, your campground will
5:38
be one amazing stargazing feast because you'll be right up there and be able to see all the most
5:44
amazing Haleakala let me just say if you love stargazing has the best views of deep space So it would be amazing if you got to go there All right let go ahead and move on to hostels Now there are not hundreds of hostels available but there a good handful of hostels available
6:00
if you are looking to save some money. But especially if you are traveling alone or you're traveling with a small group
6:06
and you really enjoy meeting new people and you love being around more people
6:10
because the hostels have environments that foster getting to know other travelers
6:16
You can choose to stay either in a dorm style. So it would be, say, four beds in a room, like bunk beds, or six people in a room
6:25
So six beds. And everything that I looked at had either a female-only room, if you wanted to go in a female-only room
6:31
or they have mixed gender rooms as well. The dorm style are going to be cheaper
6:37
Dorm styles can start anywhere from about 49 to about 70 or so
6:41
depending on which resort you, or which hostel you choose to go to
6:45
And then they also have some private rooms, not all of them, but some of them had private rooms
6:49
It's still a hostel though, so just know it's going to be a smaller room with either two twin beds or perhaps a queen bed
6:56
but you would get privacy for sleeping. But even though you get privacy for sleeping
7:00
it's still a communal bathroom that you would share the bathroom. Now, the number one top rated hostel on Maui was called Hakuna Matata, and it is in Lahaina
7:08
They have both dorm style and private style. They have a communal kitchen as well, so you can cook your meals
7:15
But they also have lots of common spaces so you can meet other people, just relax and read a book or engage in some games with some people
7:23
But it's just a really neat experience if you're the kind of person that really wants to meet other people on your travels
7:28
Oh, one little side note about Hakuna Matata, they also have kayaks, surfboards, stand-up paddleboards, snorkel equipment
7:36
It's all available if you're renting a room there that you can use these things for free. So it is a very, very cost-effective way to stay in Maui
7:43
All right, the next style that I'd like to talk to you about, although it's similar to a hotel or resort, is bed and breakfast
7:51
There are actually quite a few bed and breakfast opportunities available on Maui
7:55
And the difference is they are much smaller homes that maybe have anywhere from five to
8:01
10 rooms that they rent out as a B&B. So they serve you breakfast every morning
8:05
The neat thing about that is it's also great if you love to meet people because at breakfast
8:10
you're going to meet the other lodgers in the house. You're going to meet the hosts. So it is definitely more of an interactive style of vacation where you would be able
8:18
to meet new people and really not be on your own. If you're that kind of person that wants to be around other people, a bed and breakfast might be a perfect choice
8:28
Now, there's one I really want to talk to you about that is the number one rated on Maui, and that is the Old Wailuku Inn in Wailuku
8:35
And this one was built in 1924, and a family runs it now, and they have some amazing breakfast
8:41
It's hot cooked breakfast every morning, and the menu changes every day so you don't have to have the same thing over and over again
8:46
but in addition to that these hosts have gone out of their way to teach people about Maui where to
8:53
go what to see they have tons of recommendations tons of things that they can help you with on your
8:58
vacation so they would be just a really fantastic opportunity for you to stay there if you would
9:03
like to have a B&B experience on Maui. Now in regard to pricing they book up very very quickly
9:09
so it was hard to pinpoint what their low and high season was looking like so I just did a pricing I
9:15
found one little tiny week that was available in a sea of being booked up and that one little tiny
9:20
week was about $2.47 per night and that was in October so that's technically low season so I'm
9:26
guessing their high high season could probably get up into the 350s for possibly even more as we get
9:34
closer to the holiday season but Old Wailuku Inn is an excellent excellent choice. All right one
9:40
other style that I want to talk about before we get into those usual ones that everybody else has
9:45
talking about and that is cruising. Have you considered possibly taking a cruise to the
9:49
islands instead? Cruising actually can have two different ways. You can actually cruise
9:55
in Hawaii. So you start in Honolulu, Oahu, and then you cruise around all, I think it's just
10:01
the four main islands and then you end in Honolulu. Or if you're on the West Coast or you're willing
10:06
to go to the West Coast, they have full round trips that start in either Los Angeles, San Diego
10:11
I believe there's one in San Francisco as well. Let's start there, full round trip
10:16
go around the islands and drop you back in LA or San Diego or San Francisco
10:21
That is another option, another way to go. When you take the price, so for instance
10:27
I found a starting price, I believe it was $1,700 or so, which I know it sounds high
10:32
but bear with me. $1,700 or so for a room with a view. So it'd be a standard room with a window
10:40
view, not a balcony room. So say you did that, say it was two of you. So I think it was around
10:46
$3,500, give or take. If you were to take that and then divide it out over the entire round trip
10:52
time span, which in this case, it was leaving from Los Angeles, going around the Hawaiian
10:57
islands and coming back, it was 15 days. So if you were to divide it out over 15 days
11:02
I think it ended up, and please don't check my math on this. I'm going off of memory. I didn't
11:07
write it down specifically, but it ends up being about $300 a night, $250 or so a night. And that
11:15
includes all of your meals, all of your, most of your entertainment. I mean, you might want to do
11:20
some things when you get to Hawaii, but that is the same price you're going to be paying for a
11:24
hotel or resort. And sometimes even more than that for a hotel or resort in Hawaii. So cruising
11:30
if you looking for the most bang for your buck might just fit the bill And it another way to stay in Hawaii You would just be staying on the ship and then they would dock in Maui and then you can go in and explore Maui So let go back to kind of the main things that everybody else is talking about
11:46
And let's start with Maui vacation rentals. Now, my number one favorite place to go
11:51
for vacation rentals is Airbnb. When I was looking at Airbnb rentals on Maui
11:57
I found tons, all different kinds of price ranges. So the average, they say, for all of the seasons
12:03
low and high seasons, the average is $361. $1 a night. Don't let that fool you though, because I did find some as low as $100 a night
12:11
Granted, you get what you pay for. If you're going to go for $100 a night, then that's totally fine
12:15
You're not going to have maybe as many amenities. You might not be right on the beach, but you can
12:20
absolutely stay for some of them around $100 a night, all the way up to $5.50 or more, depending
12:26
on the season. So if you're there over Christmas, you probably would be spending even more. Also
12:30
the size of the rental. So if you're renting a studio apartment, obviously that's going to be
12:36
cheaper than if you're trying to get a five bedroom house for your whole family. So just
12:40
know that that's where that price range comes in. Also, the amount you see for the price per night
12:47
is not the only rate there is. They also, Airbnbs and all vacation rentals charge service fees and
12:52
cleaning fees. So make sure you, before you book it, you're looking at the grand total before you
13:00
make that commitment because it might be another couple hundred dollars, $300 even
13:05
above what you think the break is going to be. Not to scare you away with that whole
13:09
pricing information, but Airbnbs or vacation rentals in Maui in general are a great option
13:15
because they most likely have plenty of space for as many people as you want to bring. And if it's
13:20
just one or two of you, you most definitely can get a studio or one bedroom. You can also
13:25
vacation rentals aren't just the whole house or the whole apartment. Also, there are people who
13:29
just simply rent a bedroom in their house. So again, back to the people who want to, you want
13:33
to meet other people. You can also, if you're just one or two of you rent a room in somebody's house
13:38
and then you would use their facilities and meet them. And that's an option as well. And that's
13:43
usually a cheaper option, but rentals are in general are very good because you have your own
13:48
space. You can have your own space. It could be as big or as small as you need it to be
13:52
You have a kitchen, so you can save some money by cooking your meals and preparing your meals
13:56
rather than eating out for every single meal. It also is in some really great locations
14:01
They're in the residential areas. So you're with the locals. You're not only with the other tourists
14:07
So it does present a lot of positives if you choose to do a vacation rental in Maui
14:12
Oh, a couple more tips on that. When you are looking at Airbnb, if you've never looked at them before
14:17
what you wanna look for are super hosts or people that have really high ratings
14:24
Typically, don't go for anybody who's brand new and don't have any ratings yet, and definitely don't go for anybody that has any low ratings
14:31
Make sure you're checking them out because there have been scams. Even though Airbnb has been around for a long time now and a lot of people enjoy their services
14:38
including me, I've stayed with Airbnb a ton, there are some people that scam
14:42
So make sure you're reading those reviews and picking the ones that are super hosts
14:45
or chosen stays, the ones that have high ratings, Because it's most likely the case where they're legitimate and you'll have an excellent stay when you go there
14:54
All right And the last style I want to talk about briefly is hotels and resorts
14:58
Now you can go anywhere on YouTube and when you research and find the top 10 hotels and the top 25 resorts and all of those things
15:06
So I'm gonna let the other people explain that and right now
15:10
I just want to cover some of the more unusual ones I thought were pretty cool that I wanted to bring to your attention in case it inspires you on your Maui vacation
15:18
all right so in general hotels and resorts have a wide range of pricing available just as anything
15:23
is on maui so the lowest i saw for maybe a two to three star hotel was about 120 a night in the
15:29
low season and the highest i saw was over a thousand dollars per night at a luxury resort
15:36
so as you can see tons and tons of variety of options now the place i recommend you go when
15:42
when you're pricing out if you want to stay at a hotel or a resort is Google
15:47
hotels only because they actually pull pricing from all over the web so they
15:51
will pull all of the pricing from booking.com and from you know what is
15:57
the other one hotels.com and all of those places so that you can see all of
16:01
the prices in one spot so say you're looking at staying at the Grand Wailea
16:05
Hotel it'll bring a resort it'll bring up that and it'll list all of the pricing
16:10
at all of the different websites so that you can look and see which one you want to book it at and
16:15
find what one is the cheapest one. So I always recommend Google Hotels when you're looking at
16:19
pricing and trying to decide. The other one that I recommend you use is TripAdvisor. So that will
16:25
give you real experiences, real reviews from people who've been there and what they thought
16:30
of that property. So when you're trying to decide, say you've got two hotels and you can't quite
16:34
decide, head over to TripAdvisor and look them up and see what people are actually saying. The other
16:40
thing to do is stay right here on YouTube, look it up on YouTube, because I guarantee any of those
16:44
big hotels or resorts, somebody stayed there and made a video about it. So you can get a lot of
16:49
really great information just by searching on YouTube for that particular hotel or resort
16:54
and maybe even the style of vacation that you're looking for. So Gran Wailea family vacation
17:00
for instance. And by the way, if you haven't seen my other video, which I will link up here
17:04
I cover how professionals plan a vacation to Maui. So how do you choose the best hotel or lodging
17:11
option? How do you get the best price? Kind of what that step-by-step process is because it
17:16
matters. The step-by-step process matters. And again, we'll link that up there so you can go
17:20
take a look at that after you watch this Thank you Okay so there are four resorts that I like to bring to your attention that I thought were unique and special in some way just like I said as inspiration for your Maui vacation The first one is Kula Lodge Now this one is actually in upcountry on the slopes of Haleakala So you are in a rustic style cabin but it is more of a
17:43
it's not cheap. Let's just put it that way. It's going to be more luxurious, like gorgeous beds
17:49
beautiful scenery, but a cabin, like a nice wooden log cabin type of a feel to it. It is considered
17:55
off the grid. No TV, no phone, no AC. So it is if you want to kind of get away from it all and be
18:02
away from people. It is a very small resort. There are only five lodges on the property. So as you
18:09
can imagine, it goes pretty quickly. But if you can get one of those lodges, it is just a remarkable
18:13
experience. You also have a restaurant on site, which is the kind of place that all of the other
18:18
day hikers to Haleakala stop there on their way back. You know, they stop to have mimosas and
18:24
Lobster Benedict, you know, for breakfast when they're coming back down Haleakala, but you would
18:29
be there and have access to all of that. So it's just that cabin type of a feel and away from nature
18:35
and off the grid. It is something really fantastic. And if that sounds like something that would be
18:40
really interesting to you, go ahead and check out that link below. Again, I am not affiliated with
18:44
any of these hotels or resorts, so look around and choose whatever you want to choose. The next one I
18:49
want to talk about is the Paya Paya Paya. I'm murdering that name and I apologize again, but
18:54
the Paya Inn. So Paya or Paya, sorry, is a little town in Maui. It is actually a small historic town
19:02
and this particular inn is in that place. Now Paya Paya, again, sorry, is considered really one of
19:10
the coolest places to stay. It is well on its way, on your way to Haleakala or the Road to Hana
19:15
it's in a great location it's kind of hip so this inn is actually pretty small as far as the number
19:21
of rooms that they have but they do have some open air entrances you have access to a private beach
19:28
and the entire resort has a bali type of architecture to it it's very very cool and kind of
19:34
neat and very luxurious it's with the beach side beachfront rooms and the bali it's a very luxurious
19:43
type of place to be and very hip and cool. At my age, can I say hip? Doesn't that sound strange
19:49
But if that's what you're looking for, this might be an excellent place for you to stay. All right. The next one is my favorite place for families. Now
19:56
it technically is a luxury resort. However, the amenities it has for families cannot be beat. I
20:03
mean, it's just insane. And that is the Grand Wailea Resort. Let me just name some of the cool
20:09
things that they have. So Grand Waila Resort, four water slides, a lazy river, rope swings
20:16
whitewater rapids, a water elevator, a man-made volcano, a huge kids camp, scuba lessons
20:23
daily tours on aquagliders and kayaks and stand-up paddle boards. They have a spa, a fitness center
20:29
their own luau, and eight dining venues. I mean, can you get anything else with this place? It's
20:36
just amazing. If you have a family and this is within your budget to go, I can't imagine a better
20:43
place to stay on Maui. You're going to have a fantastic time. There's so much to do for all of
20:47
the ages in your family, especially if you're also on a family reunion, this would be ideal because
20:51
there's something for everybody. And again, I've linked it below, not affiliated, go take a look if
20:56
it's something you'd like to do. So the next one I want to talk to you about is consider one of the
21:01
top 21 most romantic places in the world by Condé Nast Traveler. So you can bet if you're looking for
21:08
a romantic getaway, honeymooners, anniversary, just anybody wanting a romantic getaway, this is the place to be. Now this one is an adults-only resort, which makes it special in
21:18
and of itself, but it's also a very luxurious resort. They have a treehouse restaurant, so it's
21:25
private beautiful views and amazing amazing food they have three golf courses you get access to
21:32
Wailea Beach but you also get your own personal beach valet somebody to bring your chair and your
21:38
towels and your umbrella and drinks and food and anything that you would want they a valet service
21:43
brings it to you they also have a fleet of Teslas if you want to be able to tour around Wailea and
21:49
go sightseeing a little bit I believe you have to stay in Wailea but still it's available they have
21:54
tropical gardens and waterfalls because they're not right on the beach. They're about 300 feet
21:59
above it. And so you've got a little bit more tropical garden surroundings. They have pools
22:05
with private cabanas and beautiful, gorgeous chaise lounges. And again, the restaurant is
22:13
called the Treehouse. It's up literally in the trees. The other thing they do is they have
22:18
surfing lessons aerial yoga lessons so using those uh silks that hang from the ceiling they
22:24
also have kite boarding lessons and just just so much more so if you're looking for a romantic
22:30
couples type of a retreat or even several couples going this place cannot be beat now as i said
22:37
before if you're planning a vacation to maui be sure to check out this video here and i will link
22:41
it below which will share with you what travel professionals like us do what we do when we're
22:48
planning a vacation because there really is a method to the madness there is certain order that
22:53
is helpful to plan your vacation in and a certain way to find all of the best information so take a
22:58
look at that video if you're interested in that and then if you're still trying to get information
23:02
on things to do in maui take a look at this video which i just did it's all of the unusual interesting
23:09
things to do on maui that nobody else is talking about and other than that i hope you have a
23:13
fantastic vacation to Maui. If we can help, let us know, give us a thumbs up and I'll see you
23:19
on the next video. Take care. Bye-bye
