Good afternoon and welcome to another live really I guess of the learn more and today we are talking
0:10
about tapestry crochet. I am being joined by the fabulous Jade from jaded crafted creations who's
0:16
going to be joining me in a few moments but first and foremost a huge welcome do let me know in the
0:22
comments box where you are watching today or if you're catching up on the replay you can post that
0:28
as well. I would love to know where you all are based. So today we are joining, being joined by
0:34
Jade because she's our featured designer in the Spring Exclusives event. So her pattern today is
0:40
the Boss Babe Wall Hanging. I'm a bit of a fan of Jade generally. So if I start fangirling, I
0:47
apologize. She's a very amazing designer and I need to know more. I don't know about you, but I
0:53
want to learn more all about this tapestry crochet technique so that we can introduce that into our
0:59
skills as a crocheter as well. So I'm just going to add Jade in
1:04
There she is! That was nice of you. How are you? Good, how are you? I am very well. Love it. So we have your beautiful tapestry crochet wall hanging behind you
1:17
I'm sorry, I'm wearing my partner's earbuds in there. A little bit big for me. and I'm also getting over a cold so I apologize if I sound stuffy you're fine don't worry you
1:27
sound amazing I can hear you which is always a bonus um so today I've just explained that we
1:33
want to know more about tapestry crochet generally um and learn some of your top tips and tricks
1:38
because you are shall we say in my mind a prolific tapestry crocheter because a lot of your designs
1:46
feature this technique doesn't it where you're you're talking you know you're using that tapestry
1:50
crochet so can you give us a bit more information about how tapestry crochet what it is and how we
1:56
use it sure um so tapestry crochet is actually it's just single crochet and all you're doing is
2:03
working over um the strand of yarn that you're not using so it's really quite simple it just takes
2:10
um a little bit of practice to get that hold right the tension of your yarn
2:15
yeah but it's actually it's very simple once you get the hang of changing colors which is
2:21
I have a video on my youtube that kind of walks you through all the beginner steps of tapestry
2:27
crochet so if you're interested in learning I would suggest doing that you can make a little
2:32
tree sampler and it'll go through kind of everything and including just like
2:41
changing between one stitch of a color so you don't even finish that it's like a half stitch
2:48
essentially but it'll it'll walk you through all of those things so you get a lot of practice just
2:53
in that one little sampler wonderful so I've linked your youtube channel below where they can
2:58
find that well find your channel and then find that video from you as well which takes someone
3:04
through all of those basics as well so ultimately tapestry crochet is just should we say another way
3:12
of changing color in your work or is it more than that um yeah I think it's another way um
3:21
there's so there's tapestry crochet and then there's I think it's called in
3:27
in Tarsia I don't know if I'm saying that properly um and the only thing I say in Starshiff
3:34
but I don't know what's right okay I just I usually read things very phonetically so
3:39
um in that one instead of carrying the yarn you're dropping the yarn so you're using your
3:46
right side and wrong side and you leave that yarn hanging on your wrong side um so
3:52
I think tapestry crochet is a little bit neater in the fact that you don't have all these ends
3:59
but some people think that the intarsia is cleaner I guess is the way to say it so like I'll show you here you can kind of see
4:13
that yarn that you're carrying in the back right you can see that black poking through
4:18
so if you were doing intarsia you wouldn't see that at all
4:22
so i was just because that was cold so yeah i mean i completely understand where you're coming from
4:27
so with instarsha you'd kind of you just work one color at a time you change color cut the yarn and
4:35
carry on yeah or you can just yeah just leave it hanging and then when you need it again you grab
4:40
it yeah i think that that's a little bit more fiddly so if you're not um like if you're more
4:48
of a beginner um then I would start with um tapestry crochet over in Tarsia
4:56
I would say the opposite but I think it's it's what you're doing because um now obviously when
5:03
I first ever met you before I think we did live on Instagram and I was like well how do you make
5:07
it so neat because the idea of with tapestry crochet you're carrying that both colors all
5:13
the time that's one of you I know what's going to be one of your top top tips is don't wait until
5:18
your first color change work over the secondary color from the beginning isn't it that's right
5:23
yeah you start right from the very first row and you carry it all the way to the last row
5:27
and that just keeps it looking very consistent with that yarn poking through the back
5:31
if you don't do that you'll have this chunk in the middle where you can see the other yarn
5:38
poking through and then on the top and bottoms you might not and it just I don't think it looks
5:43
very consistent I'm very much a perfectionist so I have some issues with that I'm trying to
5:52
let go a little bit is I think yeah perfectionism I think with crochet you have to let it go because
5:59
there's always going to be something that's not quite perfect but I love I mean when you first
6:04
told me that that kind of made more sense to me about the tapestry technique is that just do it
6:09
from the very beginning because I'd done previous tapestry patterns without knowing what they were
6:14
when I first ever was learning I was like this looks awful that's what I thought was my first
6:20
tapestry as well like this is ugly so I think the idea of actually taking that both colors or however many colors you working in that row starting it from the beginning of the pattern until you make that first color change
6:34
really does make a huge difference the other term that people tend to get a bit confused because
6:39
they do lump all of these different color work techniques together would be fair isle which is
6:45
obviously a knitting technique yes um and that is I don't know if that's similar or not it's the
6:52
same as instarsha it's just a different it's similar to instarsha but they have floats behind
6:56
it so okay if you if i am oh i've cleverly uh hung my pattern up you can't see it so fair would be
7:05
oh okay so you see how like this is carried yeah and then just sealed in and kind of neatly hidden
7:12
yeah it just makes you get your color changes exactly the same as you would for any other
7:17
technique this is this is what I would consider as in starsha as opposed to fair isle but it's
7:24
just because people get those you know these terms get bandied around don't they and I do
7:28
yeah knowledge is power so yes for sure yeah so tell me more about today's pattern that's in the
7:36
spring exclusives event if you haven't I'm going to just tell everyone to go and check out the event because obviously you can they can get a copy today which is Friday the 25th of March they can
7:45
grab your copy of the boss babe wall hanging with 50% off using the coupon code that's linked below
7:51
in the description box so tell us more about the inspiration behind today's pattern well um after
8:00
well I kind of created this a little while ago um but right now I'm using it as inspiration to
8:06
just keep me motivated and um keep me uh yeah I guess motivated to just grow my Instagram account
8:17
after I got hacked and now I'm starting all over again and uh yeah just trying to be true to myself
8:25
and uh just just live for me I mean I was doing some research because that's just who I am
8:32
about the term boss babe and it has a lot of negative connotations with being associated with
8:38
lmlmlmlmlm so i actually i really feel that people are kind of taking ownership back
8:45
of that phrase boss babe because i think it's something that a lot of female entrepreneurs
8:52
do want to feel that i am a boss babe i am running my own business i am living my best life
8:59
I think it's something we should be taking back and I love and I don't think like uh in my blog
9:06
post it says this as well but I don't think that it should be limited to just women just females
9:11
um anybody can be a babe anybody can be a boss babe if that's how you identify
9:16
like it it shouldn't just be for women that's yeah baby's a babe yeah right anybody can be a babe
9:26
I like it I like it a lot um but yeah I thought that was kind of when I was looking I was like I
9:32
know what she's done she's taking this world word back she's taking it back and owning it and I love
9:36
I know I felt that there was some negativity around that as well um but I'm just I don't care
9:42
honestly it is an inspirational message and definitely someone like yourself who's running
9:49
a family a household a business everything else you've got going on in your life it is really
9:54
inspirational when you're so successful. Yeah I find I find it inspirational and I hope that other
10:00
people do too and if you if you view it negatively um that's unfortunate I guess but and this pattern
10:07
is not for you then that's okay. Yes it is I like that I like that a lot. So you've got your boss
10:15
babe featuring today but we this is the second pattern you featured in the spring exclusives
10:20
event yeah I am so lucky to have two in this event I've been able to feature you twice
10:27
and I am absolutely and I mean obviously when people saw that pattern initially that you were
10:33
sharing the get naked bath mat I was I was like that like dumbfounded like
10:38
oh that's so sweet thank you I had that idea I think I have had it for like over a year
10:46
and it was your spring exclusives event that really just pushed me to finally do it find the
10:53
right yarn and just create it make it yes definitely I do find that these kind of crochet
11:00
events where we are kind of especially the amount of kind of co-working that we do around these
11:06
events really kind of make stuff and think oh I need to just kind of you know have a rethink and
11:11
up my game a little bit it certainly makes me yeah I think that collaborative of everybody coming
11:16
together and just putting out their best work is really um yeah it's motivating for me again to
11:22
just like kind of up the bar of what I want to create same completely the same and in case anyone
11:29
didn't know there is a pattern bundle available with the spring collection 22
11:34
this collection 2022 there is a link for that in the description as well where you can get all 25
11:43
patterns that were featured in the event i love how you're just so calm and letting me do my
11:47
they're gonna have two of your tapestry crochet patterns in that bundle straight away
11:55
you know incredibly lucky and really for the price of 18 for all of the patterns
12:00
um mine comes in at over 14 for both so i mean you're getting all those patterns
12:08
yes now obviously that that price is only available up until 8 a.m on saturday the 26th
12:15
of march that's gmt but um the bundle will still be available just unfortunately not at that heavily
12:20
discounted rate but even with that price they're still going to get a bit of a bargain with those
12:25
two patterns alone. Yeah, I think so. Yeah. Good. So we've already talked about how they should be
12:30
carrying their work from the absolute beginning. What else do we need to be doing to make our
12:34
tapestry crochet look brilliant? So when you're stitching, you really want to watch that yarn that
12:42
you're carrying. So sometimes it can get loose while you're crocheting and you can have these
12:48
kind of like almost loop of a yarn hanging there And you really just want to what I like to do is your last working stitch of the opposite color um you pinch that stitch and then you pull on that um contrast color yarn and that really help you holding that stitch
13:10
so you're not tightening it too much and then um you're pulling that yarn so that it's nice and
13:16
taut um so you're not having anything peek through it kind of coming through the other end there's
13:21
nothing worse than you turn your work and you're like yeah exactly the biggest tip would be always
13:28
always watch your right side um because that's the one that you're showing off right so if you
13:33
have a couple of loose yarns on your back side or your wrong side no worries right that's that's
13:39
facing the wall so um I just try to be really careful with my with my right side and just make
13:45
sure I don't have anything showing through there so have you ever made um a tapestry design that is
13:51
reversible or is that a whole other level um well actually it I mean it is
13:58
reversible well not really because when you reverse it I mean it still looks pretty good on the back actually yeah I agree wholeheartedly wholeheartedly
14:12
yeah it really does I think if you were doing something that wasn't writing like it was just
14:19
picture or something totally reversible good yeah if you were watching your colors
14:25
would be um like the yarn you're carrying on the side but even that is not really showing through
14:32
so you've done a little edge around it to kind of bury it in as well yeah i always
14:37
um recommend to do a single crochet border around the outside and that just really helps to
14:43
get nice clean edges keep everything all together really ties it all in
14:49
Good. See another little top tip there, just slipped that in without even knowing. So I know that obviously because we're carrying that extra yarn, you're working over additional yarn. Does that affect the gauge of a pattern or do you have to work in a particular way
15:06
it will so um it'll be a little bit thicker than just carrying one strand of yarn so if you were to
15:14
you can use my patterns because everything comes with a chart um comes with written everything out
15:20
you could do it as an intarsia if you wanted to um but that would change your gauge a little bit
15:25
obviously so you're if you were to do it intarsia um it would turn out a little bit smaller than
15:31
this because you're carrying those two strands of yarn all the way but would you say that you
15:37
need to work your stitches more tight than normal uh I'm a fairly loose crocheter but I just I take
15:45
my hook size down so I think for uh an erin yarn like that it's they want you to use like a five
15:51
or five and a half um crochet hook and I use a four to four and a half so you do want it to be
15:58
a little bit tighter I think just so it helps not show as much of that contrast yarn through the
16:04
back so that is quite interesting because I hadn't even thought about having to go down a hook size
16:08
as well um just to kind of make sure that that really is hidden so that's really good um following
16:14
a pattern like your own just kind of you've already written in the gauge based on the hook size and
16:19
that kind of thing as well yeah and really like it's not it's not the end of the world if you
16:24
don't have if you don't meet gauge I know lots of people don't like to make a gauge swatch that's
16:29
totally fine I have that written in my patterns not important like if you just want to start just
16:33
go for it man it might not turn out the exact size as mine but that's okay it's still going to
16:41
be finished and it's still going to have and that is the main thing most definitely so you've
16:46
mentioned that you you do both a written pattern and a graph so is this kind of verging into that
16:52
graphgan style territory um yeah kind of I guess I think it would be like we use the same programs
17:02
probably to create that kind of style um and then the the graphgads they can be made in single
17:09
crochet lots of people do them in corner to corner um but you could you could use the chart for that
17:16
as well if you wanted to I just don't have the instructions written that way no but do you have
17:21
like a like a stitch chart or just a written pattern um so there's a written pattern and then
17:26
there's I didn't even bring it with me but it'll be like it'll it looks like graph paper and it has
17:34
the design on it and it has rows and the stitch numbers and everything so I find it's nice like
17:40
if you're stitching and something's not quite looking right and you're like what is going on
17:45
sometimes it helps to look at the picture and see oh maybe I missed a stitch or I skipped a row or
17:52
I don't know but I find that it's helpful to have them both yeah definitely and for me I
18:00
I don't like pulling out my work unless I really have to so I just kind of mark off as I go along
18:05
like I've done that one done that one done that one that is another big tip of mine would be
18:10
cross everything off as you're going. So sometimes you just like you don't want to stop your hands
18:17
you don't want to stop crocheting, but it's really important, especially if you're working on
18:21
a larger project, like a blanket, like something that's, you know, 100 stitches wide or something
18:28
you really want to pay attention. Because if you make a mistake, and you pull that all back
18:32
it's just it's so sad so i will do like you know it says cc2 mc4 um i'll do the cc2 and cross that
18:44
off i'll maybe do the mc4 and then look at my next um what my next contrast is and maybe only
18:53
cross off my contrast or maybe only my main colors but just making sure that you're you're really
18:59
keeping track and then finish the row you know mark that off yeah don't repeat them because that's
19:06
where it all goes horribly wrong isn't it yes yeah I've had um one of my testers doing the
19:11
the mountain wrap um forgot to cross off a line and redid it and like it just the stitch was
19:19
backwards and she like what is going on the mountains over here and over there all at the same time yeah yeah so that my that a pretty big tip is just keep yourself organized yeah it takes longer obviously like it not just like something where you just
19:35
sit and watch netflix and just crochet your little heart out um yeah i usually have to sit at the
19:41
kitchen table and pay attention to what i'm doing i was um i emailed out to my um news my newsletter
19:48
a couple of might be a week and a half ago and I was kind of saying we kind of crochet for
19:53
different reasons like sometimes you want to just kind of get absorbed into a pattern and not
19:57
absolutely and for me tapestry is the way forward when it comes to getting so involved in a pattern
20:04
that all you can concentrate on is the number of stitches that you're doing yeah yeah um it's not
20:10
something I can work on at night it's something that I'll work on in the morning um through the
20:15
day sometimes but if my brain is too tired I just can't because I'll I'll read my pattern wrong I'll
20:21
miscount stitches and then I the next day you're restarting whatever you did right um so I love to
20:27
have things like right now I'm working on a test project um and that's my evening time project it's
20:35
already um it's a sweater so it's basic repeats and I just you know stitch while I relax so yeah
20:43
it's interesting that we have testers if people want to find something that's going to take their
20:47
mind off of things so feel free that's what that's what I love about testing is I don't
20:54
I don't have to use my brain as much right like the they've already done all that work they've
21:00
already done all the math I'm just I'm just checking it out I'm just making sure that it's
21:04
all good and I just stitch my my test is probably wouldn't agree with that unfortunately but yeah
21:09
In theory, we've worked it all out. That's why we test though, right
21:13
Not everything is, it's not going to be perfect the first time. And that's exactly why we put it out to test so that it's perfect when it's ready
21:21
Yes. So are there any other top tips that we need to know before we go and grab our copy of
21:27
the Boss Babe Wall Hanging Patent? What do we need to know
21:30
One other tip I would suggest for when you're done your wall hanging is to block it
21:37
um I know that that is a step that lots of people feel maybe overwhelmed by or just like oh I just
21:44
want to hang it up I'm done I already stitched it but I promise that it looks so much better
21:50
so much cleaner hang straight when it's blocked I invest in a steamer oh nice blocking so much I
22:01
I hate stuff hanging around. So I don't have to wear it
22:05
I can just steam it and walk away and it'll be dry in 10 minutes and blocked
22:10
Oh, I like that. See, I have a spray bottle and a foam mat and my pins and I measure everything
22:18
Yeah. And what I'm going to be talking about blocking on Tuesday, I think it is
22:24
I've got a pattern that's coming out or being part of a different event on Monday
22:28
And people are able to get a free download for that. but it needs to be blocked
22:33
So I'm going to have a bit of a focus on blocking next week because it is that step that lots of people might skip
22:39
It is. And I think when you're a beginner, like I know I felt overwhelmed when somebody was like
22:44
it needs to be blocked. I'm like, okay, well, I can't make this pattern because I don't know what the heck I'm doing
22:50
But it's something I think, yeah, if you're going to give them a little tutorial on how to do that
22:55
I have a small tutorial on my YouTube as well for how to wet block and how I set my tapestries and blankets and stuff
23:05
It's a little more time consuming than the steamer, obviously. You've still got to do all the other steps
23:13
It's just you don't have to wait too long for it to dry. That's the only joy of it. OK, yeah, I just mine, even in the instructions, I think it says just leave till dry
23:21
But it's usually overnight for me. Yes. I'll see sometimes mine can take like two days, which is really I just haven't got time for that
23:29
I'm just, I'm just very, I like, I just don't have time. I have to get it done. No, I totally understand
23:33
Yeah. Well, I want to say a huge thank you for joining me this afternoon, Jade
23:37
Thank you so much for having me. Oh, you're more than that. And I can't wait until the summer exclusives
23:43
because obviously today is the last day of our spring exclusives. I know that many of us are already moving on to working on our next designs
23:48
for the next exclusive event, which starts on the 1st of June. I can tell you that now already
23:53
Oh, no, it doesn't. Sorry. The 15th of June. That's my fault
23:57
I must update my own brain. And we're going to be having another multitude of amazing designers
24:03
offering some seriously amazing premium designs. Now, if you are watching this on Friday, the 25th of March
24:10
don't forget you can get a copy of Jade's Boss Babe wall hanging for 50% off
24:15
using the coupon code at the Spring Exclusives link. Or you can get yourself a copy of the Spring Exclusives on your $18 today
24:24
and then it's going to go up as of Saturday 26th of March. Oh, that was a lot
24:30
Got it. Well, we checked everything off. So seriously, thank you so much for joining me
24:36
Thank you for having me. If there's so much more I need to pick your brain about, I want to talk about your inspiration at some point as well
24:42
Absolutely. Because I'd like to know what goes on in people's brains. I don't know if you're ready for mine
24:48
That's why I talk to other people, so I don't have to share what goes on in my head. It's a mess up there, I can tell you
24:53
I think you're similar to me where our brains just never stop, right
24:58
Yeah. Yeah, I am literally about to go from here and go to work for this evening
25:03
So that's great. Got to keep busy. Got to keep busy. Well, I'm glad we got to have a nice chat before you go off to work
25:10
Me too. I've really enjoyed it. Thank you, guys, for checking in and watching with us today
25:15
Thanks, everyone. If you're going to go and try some tapestry crochet
25:18
don't forget you can check out Jade's channel where there is a full tutorial on how to make your very own, I think it's a coaster, with a little
25:25
tree on it. Am I right? I mean, it could be a coaster. It's a little square with a tree on it
25:32
So you can get practicing those tapestry crochet techniques. And we'll be back again soon for
25:37
another learn about crochet technique very soon. Yeah, I think maybe next time we could talk about
25:42
like, maybe if you want to start designing tapestry crochet or something. That would be good. Yes
25:47
that's going to be a little bit later in the year, but we'll come back to that most definitely
25:51
Okay. See you soon. Bye
