Pete heg has been through the ringer
0:33
allegations from 20 years ago 10 years
0:36
ago things that have been debunked a
0:40
story about him being abusive to his
0:42
ex-wife that his ex-wife
0:45
denied and axio still printed it after
0:49
she denied it they have tried to
0:51
Cavanaugh this man they've tried to do
0:54
everything to this man they tried to
0:55
Clarence Thomas this man and in the end
0:58
he stands tall we could be just hours
1:01
away from learning if he is confirmed or
1:04
not and I predict of course he will be
1:05
this seems like a slam dunk and I'll
1:07
tell you why because he essentially
1:10
learned his fate when Mitch McConnell
1:13
just last night voted him out of
1:15
committee for a full vote to the Senate
1:17
now they weren't anticipating getting
1:19
the McConnell vote let me explain to you
1:22
what can happen here because this is
1:23
important McConnell voted to get him out
1:26
of the committee my sources are telling
1:28
me however that he can definitely expect
1:30
NOS from marowski and
1:33
Collins McConnell may still be a no in
1:36
the Senate vote that would leave it a
1:38
tie which would be broken by JD Vance
1:41
which would see him confirmed and the
1:43
reason for that might be strategic
1:46
McConnell might be saying I'm not sure
1:48
this guy's going to do a good
1:50
job but if JD Vance breaks the tie then
1:53
this Falls only on the administration
1:55
it's a wise move on McConnell's part a
1:57
seasoned politician but I personally
2:00
think JD Vance is going to obviously
2:02
he's obviously going to break that tie
2:03
that's easy and I believe heg set is
2:06
going to be a stellar Stellar Secretary
2:09
of Defense this is a good man I know
2:11
people that are friends with him this is
2:14
a warrior this is somebody who loves the
2:16
military by the time you watch this
2:18
video he may already be confirmed so I
2:21
want you guys to watch this video about
2:23
the vote and then let me know what you
2:24
think in the comments breaking news this
2:27
afternoon I'm Martha mcallum and this is
2:29
the story breaking right now the Senate
2:32
voting to advance Pete hegs nomination
2:35
for defense secretary there's a couple
2:37
of steps uh that are in um in the in
2:41
between on this as you just heard John
2:43
Roberts mentioning there's this is a
2:45
test vote um we have had word that Lisa
2:49
marowski senator marowski of Alaska will
2:52
be a no but of course it would take at
2:54
least three NOS which it does not sound
2:57
like they have against Pete heg set in
2:59
in um in the senate in order to even
3:03
need the JD Vance as vice president
3:05
tiebreaking vote but it it doesn't sound
3:07
like that's even going to be necessary
3:09
at this point he has cleared the hurdle
3:12
um that is the main hurdle uh before
3:15
this vote for Secretary of Defense I I
3:17
should also mention that we are waiting
3:19
for the swearing in of John Ratcliffe so
3:23
things are starting to move a little bit
3:25
faster today as we see some movement on
3:27
this um and we do expect that we'll see
3:29
a swearing for John Ratcliffe as CIA
3:31
director as you remember he was of
3:34
course the dni Director of National
3:36
Intelligence in the first Trump
3:38
presidency and will have an intelligence
3:40
role as head of CIA in this presidency
3:43
as well we wait for that swearing in and
3:45
also another EO executive order coming
3:47
from the White House so a lot to watch
3:48
this afternoon let's check in with our
3:50
senior National correspondent Aisha hne
3:53
reporting live from Capitol Hill on all
3:55
of this hi Aisha hey Martha well this is
3:57
a big deal for Pete hack the defense
3:59
secretary nominee because this means
4:01
that he may have the 51 votes that he
4:04
needs for final confirmation without the
4:06
help of Vice President JD Vance and
4:09
that's because Mitch McConnell uh came
4:11
forward today and voted yes on clure
4:14
this is overcoming the filibuster to get
4:16
to that final confirmation two senators
4:20
that we expected to vote no voted no on
4:23
clure and that was Susan Collins and
4:25
Lisa marowski and both of them put out
4:27
pretty lengthy statements on X um Susan
4:31
Collins putting her out just a few
4:32
moments ago and they're both pointing to
4:35
a couple of different things they both
4:37
say that they don't believe that hex
4:38
Seth is prepared to manage such an
4:42
enormous um sized uh uh Department like
4:46
the Pentagon and then also pointing to
4:48
those past allegations of infidelity um
4:51
and and they just don't feel comfortable
4:53
uh saying that he's just not ready for
4:55
that role so that's the two senators
4:58
that are out uh Mitch McConnell is in as
5:01
is all as are all the other senators in
5:03
the conference um Roger wicker the armed
5:06
services committee chairman had told me
5:08
right before this vote I'd asked him do
5:10
you think you still have the 50 that was
5:12
when Lisa morowski came out that she was
5:14
a no and he said yes so they walked into
5:18
the room here feeling confident they had
5:20
whipped the votes um for quite some time
5:22
and they knew that they had these votes
5:24
and they would not need JD Vance to come
5:26
in what happens next is a lot lot of
5:30
waiting it's a waiting game because
5:32
Democrats are going to jam the Senate
5:34
again invoke that 30-hour debate Rule
5:36
and we won't see a final confirmation
5:38
vote on hexi until probably late Friday
5:41
night Martha all right
