Hey ladies and gentlemen, this is Carmine Sabia for Explain America and a biographer for former President Obama, his wife Michelle, and the family
0:09
He just laid a bombshell on everybody. And, you know, I think Michelle Obama is going to need to go into hiding after this

0:25
Now we're going to have a little fun with this. So this biographer who spent probably around a decade with the Obamas and around the Obamas
0:33
he talks about the transformation of former President Obama and his wife Michelle
0:38
And there's a particular transformation he's talking about with Michelle that he says really has stunned everyone in her community where she was born and raised
0:48
It's not the Michelle Obama they knew. And there was serious and significant changes that happened to Michelle Obama
0:57
What were those changes? I'm going to let him tell you. When they're living in Hyde Park, you know, in this, you know, fairly modest condominium townhouse, you know, even in 2003, 2004
1:13
the notion that they'd end up later in their lives hanging out with Richard Branson and Jay-Z and Beyoncé and, you know, having a private chef, you know, who unfortunately drowned
1:27
So there's no resemblance between their lives today and who they were 20 years ago
1:35
And when I was doing most of my interviewing across black Chicago in like 2010, 2011, 2012, even then folks could see this sort of desire to hang with celebrities thing building in the White House
1:52
And some of the folks weren't surprised that Barack was going that way
1:59
But they were really painfully upset that Michelle had lost, had seemingly lost her grounding because they viewed her as just the epitome of hardworking, working class, South Side, Chicago, black family
2:24
You know, granted, he's this, you know, multicultural, multiracial creature from another planet, but they couldn't fathom that Michelle, you know, no longer was who she was
2:38
Now, both of his first two girlfriends, Alex McNair and Genevieve Cook, showed me all of their letters from Barack
2:56
Barack throughout the 1980s was a real letter writer. Now, no one has ever seen Barack's letters to Sheila Yeager, his third girlfriend, the woman he lived with in Chicago, 86, 87, 88
3:12
And those letters go on into the Harvard years, 89 to 91
3:19
If the letters to Sheila and Barack, let me think how to say this under the rules
3:28
Barack made it clear to me that he hoped I would never read them, if I can put it that way
3:34
I think if the letters to Sheila ever become public, I think that will be a signal event
3:46
I think the correct thing to say is that those letters would detail just how extremely serious and extremely intense a relationship that was, and that it continued off and on into his Harvard Law School years
4:08
Now, we can all talk about the changes we've seen in the Obamas and changes we've speculated about the Obamas, but to hear it from somebody who was there, it sheds new light on it
4:18
I personally have seen a lot of changes and I suspect a lot of changes and transformations have happened
4:25
But, you know, that's up to the casual observer to decide. I do, however, want to know what you think
4:32
Do you suspect any transformations with Michelle Obama? Do you suspect any changes were made with Michelle Obama
4:39
Let me know in the comments. Also, please remember to like, share, and subscribe because it really helps us out
