guys we just received word that longtime
0:34
Republican senator very popular
0:37
Republican senator Allan Simpson has
0:40
passed away now Senator Simpson was 93
0:44
years old at the time of his
0:46
passing he retired from the senate in
0:49
2010 he received the presidential medal
0:52
of freedom just recently from former
0:55
President Joe Biden and he has a heck of
0:57
a legacy in the Republican party at one
1:00
point he was the minority whip for the
1:03
Republican party so he's a guy who is
1:06
very consequential in American politics
1:09
and we
1:10
know that his family is grieving right
1:12
now that his loved ones that his friends
1:14
are grieving right now and I hope you'll
1:17
join me in
1:19
praying that he rests in peace in heaven
1:22
with God Jesus and the Holy
1:24
Spirit and that he's forgiven of any
1:26
sins he committed through our Lord and
1:29
Savior Jesus Jesus Christ and that our
1:31
Lord and savior bring peace and comfort
1:32
to his family it's always a tragic time
1:35
when someone passes away no matter what
1:37
their age is and this is a tragedy even
1:41
though he's 93 years old and lived a
1:43
great life a full life I would like you
1:45
to watch a little bit about his history
1:48
here it's just a short clip news story
1:50
about you know his life and his passing
1:53
and then please let me know what you
1:54
think in the
1:57
comments former Republican US senator
2:00
Alan Simpson from Wyoming has died his
2:02
family says he struggled to recover from
2:04
a broken hip back in December Simpson
2:06
served three terms as senator from 1979
2:09
to 1997 and was known for his quick wit
2:12
and bridging partisan divides we'll see
2:14
the likes of him anymore he received the
2:17
presidential medal of freedom back in
2:18
2022 from President Biden he was 93
2:22
years old let's turn now to Capitol Hill
2:24
or stay on Capitol Hill where the Senate
2:26
will vote today on a stop Gap funding
2:27
bill to avoid a government shutdown
2:29
Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer now
2:30
says he will vote in favor of the bill
2:32
just dayss after saying he would not
2:34
while the CR bill is very
2:37
bad the potential for a shutdown has
2:41
consequences for
2:42
America that are much much worse I
2:45
believe allowing Donald Trump to take
2:48
even more even much more power via a
2:52
government shutdown is a far worse
2:55
option I want to bring in CBS News
2:58
Congressional correspondent Caitlyn huy
2:59
Burns who's on the hill for us now uh
