Madness In The House — Kevin McCarthy’s Replacement Named

Hey ladies and gentlemen, this is Carmine Sabia for Explain America

History made today as Kevin McCarthy is ousted as the Speaker of the House

but history also made with a new Speaker of the House being named immediately

So McCarthy is the first Speaker in the history of the United States of America to be voted out as Speaker of the House

It's not the first time a vote like this happened. A vote like this happened in 1910, but it failed

This vote, however, was successful and Kevin McCarthy was removed. Now, according to the House rules, a new Speaker, Speaker pro temp, is appointed in his place

That person, Patrick McHenry, Congressman Patrick McHenry, the new Speaker of the House

at least until there is a vote to elect a new Speaker, because there has to be a Speaker of the House

Just for the presidential line of succession, there has to be a Speaker of the House

He was furious in being named the new Speaker, however. Let's take a look at what happened and you'll see what I mean

pursuant to the rule, acts as Speaker pro tem until the election of a new Speaker

and bestows the authorities of the office of Speaker upon the Speaker pro tem to the extent necessary and appropriate to that end

In the opinion of the Chair, prior to proceeding to the election of a Speaker

it would be prudent to first recess for the relative caucus and conferences to meet and discuss the path forward

Accordingly, pursuant to Clause 12A of Rule 1, the Chair declares the House in recess subject to the call of the Chair

that is Congressman Patrick McHenry, a Republican from North Carolina, a close ally of Kevin McCarthy
