We'd love to chat with you guys, hang out, talk, chat a little about today's top stories
0:38
So now, get to the story, right? This is the big story of the day
0:41
House Minority Leader, possibly soon to be Speaker, and California Representative Kevin McCarthy
0:49
has vowed to remove Representative Ilhan Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee
0:55
Now, this is a huge deal. This is a gigantic committee with a lot of power
1:00
There may just be one little hitch in his plan, and we're gonna get to that in just a second
1:05
but he was talking to a group of Jewish Republicans this week in Las Vegas when he made the announcement
1:11
and I actually wanna let you take a look at that. It was done on Saturday. Let's watch the video and see what he has to say
1:18
You know, I made another promise to you last time. There was this Congresswoman, Ilhan Omar
1:24
Boo! That's a rightful boo. I remember what she said about me
1:30
I remember what she said about Israel. Remember what she said about the relationship
1:38
I remember it so much, I promised you last year that as Speaker, she no longer would be on Foreign Affairs
1:45
and I'm keeping that promise now. Woo! Okay, so it sounds great, right
1:54
People think she's anti-Israel. A lot of people feel that way about her
1:57
and we shouldn't assign that one way or the other. We don't know what's in her heart
2:02
but we do know that a lot of people feel that way, especially a lot of Jewish Republicans
2:07
and a lot of just plain Republicans feel that way, and even people who aren't Republicans
2:10
a lot of them feel that way, just with a lot of the past comments she's made
2:14
So it sounds like an easy thing, right? He's the Speaker if he gets that job
2:18
and he's gonna remove her from that committee, right? Not so much
2:23
He can suggest it, he can pressure his caucus, but the Speaker of the House does not have the power
2:29
to remove somebody from a standing committee, and Foreign Affairs is a standing committee
2:35
The only way to actually remove Omar would be through a full vote of the House
2:40
and by a majority of the members of the House voting to remove her
2:44
Now, Republicans have the majority, and if they had the red wave or red tsunami
2:49
or red huge tidal wave that they're gonna have, that would be probably an easy vote to secure
2:55
Omar's not well-liked among a lot of Republicans, so you'd figure that would be pretty simple
3:01
but it is a razor-thin majority. There are a lot of Republicans
3:06
who may not be on board with that, but you have some conservative Democrats
3:10
who may be on board with removing her from that committee. So I would put it at about a 50-50 proposition
3:17
I think he will try it. We don't know where it's gonna land, but I would put it at a 50-50 proposition
3:23
but it's just important to note that he himself by himself does not have the power to do it
3:27
He would need a full vote of the House, and we'll see where that lands
3:31
