0:37
the world of politics is a dirty place
0:40
it's
0:40
dangerous it's
0:43
Cutthroat and often times we are at the
0:46
throats of our enemies right Republican
0:49
verse Democrat Democrat vers Republican
0:53
and we don't often look at the big
0:56
picture right we live in the greatest
0:57
country in the world and I often tell
1:00
people you know if you lined up a 100
1:03
issues most people would agree on 95 of
1:06
them and for some reason we focus on say
1:09
the five issues we don't agree with each
1:11
other on it's a really weird thing and
1:14
so at a time like this you know the
1:16
passing of a senator and she's a
1:19
Democrat I I appeal to people keep her
1:23
family in your
1:24
prayers and to even though she disagreed
1:28
with us on policy you know to pray for
1:30
her to pray for her family and to pray
1:32
for strength for them to get through
1:34
this tough time now she's a Florida
1:36
state senator her name Geraldine
1:39
Thompson and there's a whole report here
1:42
about you know exactly what she did her
1:44
Legacy and a statement from her family
1:47
I'd like you to watch it and then you
1:49
know say a prayer for her and her family
1:51
and let me know what you think in the
1:52
comments learn more we will bring you an
1:55
update on air and online at west.com
2:00
now to the honors pouring in across our
2:03
state this morning we're remembering a
2:04
central Florida political leader and
2:06
Pioneer state senator Geraldine Thompson
2:09
has died after complications from a
2:11
recent surgery and West's bomes and
2:13
takes us to the Orlando Museum that is a
2:15
small part of Thompson's massive
2:21
Legacy we are at the Wells built Museum
2:23
in Paramore and Geraldine Thompson
2:25
actually helped establish this Museum to
2:28
educate people about the cont of black
2:30
people in Orlando Geraldine Thompson
2:33
best known recently at least for being a
2:35
state senator and she won re-election
2:37
just last year her family says that
2:39
Thompson died surrounded by family
2:41
members due to complications from knee
2:43
surgery Thompson started her time in
2:45
public office back in 2006 when voters
2:48
chose her to serve in the state house
2:50
later she moved on to the Senate she was
2:52
a champion of education and trying to
2:54
curb gun violence before she got into
2:57
politics she was a teacher and she spent
2:59
6 years years in Orange County Public
3:00
Schools then went to Valencia College
3:03
where she pioneered an outreach program
3:05
to help low-income students get a higher
3:07
education later she did help found the
3:09
wells built Museum transforming the
3:11
former hotel that housed black Americans
3:13
during segregation into a place of
3:16
learning last night Thompson's Family
3:18
sent us a statement saying quote her
3:20
tireless work in Education Health Care
3:22
and civil rights including her
3:24
leadership to establish the wells built
3:26
Museum of African-American history and
3:28
culture in Orlando reflected her
3:29
unwavering commitment to creating a
3:32
better world for future Generations
3:34
Thompson was 76 years old and her death
3:37
also means that there will have to be a
3:39
special election to fill her seat in the
3:41
state senate but we don't know yet when
3:43
that election will be held covering
3:45
Orange County in Orlando Bob Hazen West
