Chattanooga Tennessee Walking Tour - 4K City Walks and Virtual Walking Tours for Treadmill
Mar 18, 2025
I'm taking a trip back east and I'm going to try to film as many walks as I can fit in. Today we are starting with Chattanooga, TN on the Tennessee River in the SE part of the state. It's a bit overcast, very hot, and very muggy Saturday morning down by the River and Acquarium as we walk around exploring. I hope to do a couple more walks in this great city before I leave. Keep on Steppin' -H

According to the Mayo Clinic, a daily brisk walking routine can help you maintain a healthy weight and lose body fat, reduce stress and tension, improve your mood, and consequently live longer. And it doesn’t have to be hard. You can work your way up to longer and faster walks, alternate walking speeds. Just push yourself a little bit every day and you can see benefits. It’s a simple fat burning cardio exercise and workout.
Apparently, every 2000 steps walked reudces the risk of early death by 8-11%.
My Story: I'm a filmmaker by trade. In 2016, we sold our house to go traveling for the year in Europe. Since I couldn't work there, I decided to start another Youtube Channel. I love walking as a way to explore and this was an easy thing to share. It got popular and I've continued. My goal is to share these treadmill travel videos to help make your work out fun with virtual walks to make the cardio go more quickly.

hello Walkers and welcome to Chattanooga Tennessee
0:09
on the Tennessee River my name is Henry I'll be your proxy Walker today your virtual travel guide
0:15
your co-discoverer and we're gonna find some stuff today this is going to be a lot about
0:20
Discovery and what we can find like I just found this place discovered it
0:27
myself I'm just kidding uh of course so I've never really been around in
0:33
Chattanooga this is a new one for me and I haven't done a whole lot of research other than a quick Wikipedia article
0:41
um and I wanted to squeeze this in before the rain comes and so we're gonna find cool places like this Riverfront
0:48
area and we're just going to explore and see what we find I love this little
0:54
steps here with the waters like a little water park leads down to the river we're
0:59
gonna go just take a quick look at that then we're going to loop around through this market area I saw
1:05
it is currently uh what is it I think it's
1:11
87 degrees Fahrenheit 28 degrees Celsius 87 percent humidity
1:18
I think that's right uh I might have my Fahrenheit wrong I already forgot it uh
1:23
I'm going to talk a little bit more once we get away from these uh this traffic
1:29
we're on the Warren Street Bridge no Market Street Bridge sorry on Market Street that makes more sense
1:36
and over to our right is this really cool
1:41
uh splash park goes down to the Tennessee River
1:47
which is the river on which Chattanooga sits I'm going to give you a few facts here
1:54
in a minute but first I want to thank our patreon supporters you guys I really do appreciate the support got a couple
2:00
new of you new supporters now patrons and I want to say thank you also thank
2:06
you to the folks that have contributed one time uh contributions via Paypal
2:11
it's also very welcome and uh very helpful
2:19
so let's see here we're getting into a pedestrian area which is pretty cool
2:26
this is where the kind of Market or maybe it's a Fair of some sort
2:33
this is the Tennessee Aquarium that's what I looked a little bit like an apartment building from the outside but
2:40
um I have not been in here but I'm kind of interested in going in if you know about the aquarium please let me know in
2:46
the comments section [Music] oh yeah we're gonna go down here
2:51
also to avoid the music and I just wanna
2:57
I think actually we're gonna loop around towards the end sphere
3:03
Cool River culture down here of course [Music] um
3:09
the native people were here first and displaced each other over the centuries
3:17
most recently the Cherokee were here which I think first dated back to 1776.
3:25
here's another Splash Pool oh this is fun man we're
3:31
gonna get up over here hopefully the music will not trigger a
3:37
copyright strength uh I may drop in some of my own just to
3:43
block the algorithm from being upset with me
3:50
also part of the aquarium over here [Music]
4:04
and over there is puckets oh yeah yeah it's a DJI yeah that's the same one yeah
4:10
it's a little tripod stand yep yep it's really handy have a good one
4:18
um is there really know what's going on here let's walk around
4:26
[Music]
4:32
well that's a very popular music so you may have to drop in my own I like
4:38
these little arches over here
4:43
we just did one I'm gonna I'm hoping to do more than one
4:49
walk in Chattanooga so keep an eye out for that it looks like a farmer's market maybe
4:57
with some crafts
5:03
[Music]
5:13
all right now this is also a main drag that drove in on and uh it's got some sort of older
5:20
downtown areas but we're going to save that for another walk we're gonna loop around here
5:33
definitely a lively area
5:38
sorry to Bob and weave I do that I'm easily distracted on these walks but I
5:44
love sharing these little places that we find and little details that like this
5:51
stuff over here these are thermoses and stuff really cool lots of Art
5:57
and crafts and Jewelry snacks
6:04
excuse me
6:12
[Music]
6:18
so you can see how big and massive this aquarium is
6:23
it goes for the whole block about a half block wide and a full block long
6:41
I'm always a little self-conscious about walking around with the Gimbal and the camera
6:46
for some reason I really shouldn't be
6:52
I think that's kind of natural
7:04
it is soupy here 87 humidity I think I said
7:09
and warm maybe this is the main drag I came in on
7:16
um but let's go down to the river and now we'll loop around there's this Riverfront area
7:22
which is pretty cool I love that they have a bike lane too specifically
7:28
bikes it's pretty cool
7:33
now I believe so that's the north side we're looking at north side of the river and I forgot to point out
7:41
maybe we'll do it another time on another walk there's a foot Bridge across the river
7:48
and maybe we'll go over there and check that area out at some point not today
7:53
maybe on Monday I didn't tell you the time of year so it is
7:59
Late July and us here
8:06
um about uh noon right around noon so
8:14
this is what one might expect apparently during the Civil War
8:22
Chattanooga was quite an important Nexus because a lot of
8:28
railroads and Roads came through here as well as the river and it later became an industrial center
8:34
because of that looks like they're going to have a band down here
8:41
Maybe it's awesome look at all this great seating
8:46
wow that's perfect we're gonna be it the population here is about 180 000 I don't remember if I
8:52
mentioned that it's Hamilton County and uh we're actually gonna go to Hamilton
8:58
County Ohio later on this trip which is Cincinnati pretty much
9:04
I mean there's other communities in there of course area around Cincinnati but
9:11
it's the metro area
9:16
there's the bridge that we started where we started it's
9:22
interesting to note that it's a drawbridge I not sure
9:28
I guess the tall Stacks boats maybe that come through here would need a drawbridge
9:36
but that's pretty high and then we can look back you can see sort of a blue Bridge behind
9:43
that is the pedestrian bridge you can see the aquarium
9:48
Center and we're going to walk along the water here because I want to show you this these two riverboats
9:57
which are often referred to as tall Stacks I think in that they were or a paddle wheeler
10:04
I assume these are not steam operated steam operations can be pretty be fairly
10:11
uh fairly dangerous I'm gonna tuck my mic
10:18
in so you might hear some rustling
10:23
may help a little bit with some wind noise
10:32
they're that mist it's not smoke I think it's mist help cool things down although
10:39
usually that's from evaporation and I don't think the evaporation is going
10:45
to be efficient
10:53
it's kind of a neat uh pier and dock out here
11:14
Southern Bells Landing now I'm going to assume here that this isn't actually a
11:19
paddle Whalers maybe just permanently docked there
11:32
's a Riverboat modern version it's probably pretty fun
11:47
what we're going to do is go up here and then we're going to make a left and go back up the hill aways because there's some
11:54
other things in the area seem pretty cool
12:00
I came in to town over this bridge I believe
12:06
I saw at least one baseball stadium minor league team
12:13
foreign
12:41
noticing the colors of the um
12:46
trees they painted I think they paint the base of the trees for insects to help prevent insect
12:52
infestations but it might just be for decoration
12:58
I'm curious about this southern belles Landing
13:05
as soon as it has a shop and tickets
13:10
but it also looks fairly permanently more there's a there's a smaller one on
13:17
the far side so maybe uh
13:24
maybe this excuse me oh there's also a duck tour so these duck boats that are amphibious boats I
13:31
see one up here on the land we saw one in the river earlier when we started
13:37
we'll go check that out hopefully
13:43
maybe we'll uh find a route
13:49
to where I want to go
14:04
normally I would be co-walking meaning I'd be looking at my the map on
14:10
my phone as I walk but now I'm filming with my phone can't really access it I
14:16
think it's a whole new system
14:24
[Music] Chattanooga Ducks
14:30
so I guess you can go in the river and on the streets and
14:35
they give a little tour
14:42
we did one in Dublin Ireland actually
14:49
which is a lot of fun
14:57
I hoping there'd be a stairwell up this hill to the right
15:04
but that's right we get to uh see this little playground
15:17
how's it going man all right good
15:35
I think they were rolling their own cigarettes
15:40
with possible air quotes I did see a guy smoking a crack pipe on the drive-in so
15:45
that was interesting not down here but further up the hill
15:50
unless uh less busy area was interesting
15:57
I assumed it looks like a crack pipe what I know of those
16:03
things
16:14
um I like to talk a little bit about how much I enjoy interacting with you guys in the comment
16:21
section of YouTube it is a surprising
16:27
aspect to me I thought I would just be into the walking
16:32
exploring and that's great love it but I really enjoy hearing from you guys
16:42
uh hearing your feedback and your thoughts and your memories and Corrections get a lot of those
16:49
because I make a lot of mistakes or I leave things out and people suggest other places to go and make requests
16:56
it's great it's great little community and I love it I love hearing that well not hearing but knowing that
17:04
uh viewers are enjoying these so please if you have any thoughts or Corrections
17:11
or memories you want to share please let me know in the comments section
17:16
and I try to respond to all the comments that make it through the
17:22
admittedly quirky YouTube comments
17:27
algorithm filter that's a lot of words but basically that YouTube lets through
17:33
sometimes I go on there and there's four or five comments from months ago
17:40
I have to go and apologize for not responding sooner but I do read them
17:49
Cold Stone Creamery lots of restaurants down here a little further up there are more
17:58
hotels and that sort of thing a lot more Office Buildings it looks like commercial spaces
18:07
normally I like to call out the street names but I'm not really seeing any street signs
18:18
oh here we go coming up on Aquarium Way kind of makes sense
18:30
and then off to the right here is the baseball field and Stadium
18:43
Chi Memorial and then off to the left it's kind of where we were earlier
18:50
with the aquarium we're gonna go up I think
18:56
well there not really anything else up there it's a small minor league team double A
19:02
I believe if you're into baseball uh and so we're going to go back down here and we'll make a right
19:22
big parking garage there's a lot of public parking down here I don't know what the costs are I used
19:28
Park mobile app to park on the street a few blocks away and it was two bucks for an hour and a
19:33
half it's a pretty pretty reasonable honestly
19:40
here's an IMAX theater off to our right
19:49
and this is Aquarium Way and
19:57
run across love the bike Lanes
20:05
here's a hotel this is chestnuts Chestnut Street
20:24
nice and convenient down location
20:30
I don't want to go too far up here because I want to save that for another walk but I do want to go up at least one more
20:35
block there's a Residence Inn
20:42
there's a kind of a spinning over the left here our alleyway
20:47
you may have oh here's a well that's pretty cool too
20:53
it's like a free shuttle system Maybe I like that I like that a lot
21:06
there's a Hilton up here looks like this is a Climbing Gym off to
21:11
our left
21:18
High Point climbing and Fitness [Music] knew it
21:41
I'm gonna go one more block here yeah
21:47
closed course because there's a little Tower over
21:53
there I want to see what that is I think it might be a children's museum
22:00
foreign
22:09
street that we're Crossing on I mean Crossing Chestnut here
22:19
cool they have a bike share system here or bike rental like that too way to go Chattanooga
22:34
sorry bud yeah so Ocean Adventure Wild Kratts
22:41
Creative Discovery Museum I love these things
22:48
these Children's Museums very cool
22:53
they're just like let kids literally discover things right
22:59
just pursue their curiosity ignite their curiosity curiosity it's fantastic
23:05
we're gonna come up here to Fourth and make a left yeah you can see
23:12
people uh enjoying and they look at the playground and
23:17
oh that looks awesome inside climbing
23:24
really Climbing Gym jungle gym kind of place
23:33
well that's interesting
23:42
like the uh right the intersection
23:48
you can see the Tennessee flag over there on that building it's a
23:53
red with a blue circle in the Middle with three white stars I don't really
23:59
know any of the symbolism about all of that
24:15
push the button
24:24
There's A Creative Discovery Museum again
24:39
there we go you can kind of get an idea
24:46
looking around here how hilly this area is along the river
24:52
that way
25:12
it's interesting they've got a a light camera or a security camera over there
25:18
it's above the corner well I gotta tell you it is soupy here
25:28
being from Montana it's hard to uh
25:33
it's a shock to the system I guess over
25:38
humidity here called mugginess it's muggy
25:50
some artwork here
26:00
moon pies to Mountain highs Trail high in the sky I like that
26:07
there's a Pie Trail in Montana it's not a formal thing but you can go to all these small towns
26:15
and Central Montana and try different pies
26:21
what are you done it's a lot of fun to do if you like pie so
26:28
again I think we're gonna cross again head back to the aquarium and well we're going to go over here to
26:34
a little neighborhood area you can see there's some bars and restaurants down here
26:40
this is Broad Street that we're crossing
26:48
older buildings steam Logistics man that's a new one
26:59
it's busy down here but it's also kind of quiet you know it's busy in a manageable way for a
27:05
city of 180 000 and you know surely
27:11
a lot more in the region metro area
27:24
hi there
27:31
by the way is that on live video no oh okay well thank you
27:41
that is a rarity that people get upset and I will blur her face hopefully I'll
27:47
remember to do that some more old spaces um if you ever find yourself in one of
27:54
these and don't want to be in the video please let me know and I will remove you
28:01
I want to be respectful of that look at this I like this
28:07
these art this is sort of they do this in Bozeman
28:12
too and uh it just is so much better than a
28:19
blank green or gray box adds a little color to the space
28:26
there's uh we're crossing fourth here and that is uh Hair of the Dog Pub
28:33
and a parking garage
28:41
this is I don't know if this building is old on the left but I do like the Assad work
28:48
the uh [Music] Chattanooga Allergy Clinic
28:55
which is kind of a neat old style right sort of
29:01
early 1900s late 1800s I'm not sure what the history of that
29:07
building is
29:36
all right so I I said we're going to go up here and duck into this little neighborhood so I want to do that
29:43
keep my word you can see uh that's actually a parking
29:50
garage over there I believe but it's got some cool facade to it and we're gonna cross the
29:57
market on third we're gonna go up Third Street
30:22
now it seems I drove through here earlier and it seems like this is kind of a mix
30:29
of there might be a lot of new stuff although new is kind of relative
30:36
these look like they're 10 to 20 years old
30:41
this one off to the left might be a little older but it might be newer
30:47
and then you get into some even newer stuff down there now
30:54
um pretty quickly you start to talk about
30:59
this and you get into issues of gentrification
31:05
which I don't want to go down that rabbit hole right now even though it is a serious issue
31:15
look how quiet and sedate this little neighborhood is right downtown right by the river
31:31
quiet town houses Pleasant little yards
31:39
front porches I love a good usable front porch something that's more than
31:45
just decorative I think it's fantastic
31:53
Cherry Street town homes
31:58
getting a little workout here
32:18
nice shaded and it really is to me surprising how quiet it can be
32:23
just a block off of one of the main drags looking back at the aquarium
32:30
and uh we we're kind of where we started not hilarious
32:39
I think what we're gonna do we're on Cherry Street so I'm gonna go up
32:45
Aquarium Way in other little ways foreign
32:51
[Music] nice and quiet in here
32:57
as a loud truck goes by but I think on the whole looks like some condos in here
33:05
I mean yeah I could totally live down here if I had the money
33:12
air conditioning which I think is fairly ubiquitous
33:19
um down here I think there are course
33:25
people who can't afford air conditioning or these fancy condos
33:36
this is a kind of a neat little space Walnut Street
33:41
more Town Homes here shops
33:46
looks like condos and then over here is the Footbridge
33:55
I'm not going to go to that yet I'm going to wait for that
34:00
and try and do that another day somebody on one wheel I like those I don't think I'm not sure I could ride
34:06
one but they do look fun
34:13
Walnut Commons is what this is called
34:46
all right so we're just gonna make a loop here I wanted to check this out and see
34:51
if maybe we get into some older parts of town
34:57
I will try to show those in another way looks like
35:02
if we well there's a major road but I think if we kept going up
35:08
we would get into some of these older places
35:15
but here's a looks like an older apartment building
35:23
yeah you give them some stuff up there I'm I don't have time to do that today so we'll try and grab it another time
35:29
I'm gonna and uh we're gonna walk down to that
35:37
stairs of that water stairs that we saw at the beginning because I'm intrigued by that and I
35:42
think it's really cool I love little public areas like that that
35:47
allow kids to maybe get a little wet to run around
35:53
burn off some energy and just be outside
35:58
without without melting
36:06
and so I talked about the hills earlier so when we walk by the Hilton and then you see a big hill right behind it
36:14
um with some buildings and then that drops off and then you end up going up another
36:20
Hill it's uh quite
36:28
okay I'm just going to show you this sorry I'm going to tilt you down and
36:34
this uh sewer grate sewer cover
36:39
it's got that city of Chattanooga drains to River no dumping but it's got a cannon and a little scene in the metal
36:46
work you know something like that
36:52
isn't uh it's probably expensive um not outrageously expensive for a
36:59
government but it's a little detail like that that adds a lot of personality to
37:04
an urban space I also want to comment on the trees because I love trees in cities
37:13
makes such a huge difference personality of a place and it it actually
37:20
scientifically it helps cool a place keeps it keeps the temperatures down you
37:25
know when you have these giant cement heat sinks in the urban centers
37:32
it makes it harder for cities to cool down at night to stay cool during the day gets into a feedback loop
37:39
but a few trees around to make a huge difference
37:54
so a little Loop
38:11
you can see um a barbecue place across the way
38:16
which is one of the treats of being in the south
38:22
that's a great barbecue and there's a lot of regional differences as well
38:35
I do love the parking apps makes life so much easier
38:42
rather than [Music] having to come up with coins all this
38:49
lady maybe she's uses a credit card even a credit card is makes it a lot
38:54
easier
39:02
right so this big brick building is Pucketts which I believe is a restaurant but I'm not entirely sure
39:12
at least half of it anyway [Music]
39:19
oh a nice little breeze makes a huge difference [Music]
39:35
Jay watch here
40:06
foreign
40:32
here's the aquarium again a massive building
40:39
space this is Winter by Dowd Opera sorry if I'm mispronouncing your
40:46
name
40:51
this is the what is it oh ghoul Passage
40:59
I think that's a native word [Music] great water feature
41:06
[Music] you see that part down there
41:12
it's awesome
41:20
it's fantastic this
41:37
can walk in this like a little Rushing Water
41:48
and you got a splash pool down at the bottom that's in the shade that's really cool and well thought out
41:59
I love it super fun and then you can even make
42:05
your way down to the river all right I'm gonna do that but I want to thank you guys for joining us today
42:11
on City walks first walk in Chattanooga virtual treadmill tour
42:17
where we do virtual tours of cities and nature walks sometimes so uh I want to thank you come again we're
42:26
going to make some more walks film some more walks and uh discover some more
42:31
places so please come back soon tell your friends and of course keep on stepping
