Trump tariffs return: Can Canada reach 'very hard' trade deal with US?
The brief extension to US President Donald Trump’s 90-day tariff pause is over, and countries that didn’t get a US trade deal in time are being hit with heavy tariffs. This time – unlike in April – it looks like these levies are here to stay. Markets lurched almost immediately, with London’s flagship FTSE 100 index dipping half a percentage point within an hour of opening, having hit record highs in the last couple of weeks of July. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney posted on X that he is “disappointed” by the tariffs. He says that Canada accounts for just one per cent of the supply of fentanyl coming into the US, after Trump used the proliferation of the drug as a major reason behind targeting Canada.
