First at five, there was an important
0:01
but lesser known name for today other
0:04
than Wednesday. It's also utility scam
0:07
awareness day. Between Duke Energy and
0:09
Tampa Electric, nearly 2,000 Florida
0:12
residents have already fallen victim to
0:14
utility scams this year alone. Fox 13's
0:17
Ariel Placencia joins us in our
0:19
newsroom. Ariel, unfortunately, these
0:21
victims are losing a lot of money.
0:23
They really are, Haley. Around 430 bucks
0:25
per person. That's about how much the
0:27
average victim is losing according to
0:29
the Better Business Bureau. And so the
0:31
goal of today's awareness campaign is to
0:32
make sure that Bay Area residents are
0:34
always staying one step ahead of these
0:36
scammers.
0:39
The scams are they're getting different.
0:41
They're becoming increasingly more
0:42
sophisticated.
0:43
Scammers target what they know is most
0:45
important to you, like your electricity,
0:47
gas, or water. And they're going to
0:49
great lengths to get your money. They're
0:50
using AI, um, this caller ID, uh,
0:53
technology, things that we haven't seen
0:55
before in the past. So, that's what
0:57
we're paying more attention to and
0:58
trying to get the message out about this
0:59
year.
1:00
Duke Energy says about 1,500 of its
1:02
customers have already fallen victim to
1:04
utility scams this year. And over 430
1:07
Tiko customers have reported these kinds
1:09
of scams, too. That's already more than
1:11
last year, and there's still six weeks
1:13
left to go in 2025. So, we have come
1:16
together with uh the Better Business
1:17
Bureau as well as Tiko and we want to
1:20
make sure all of our customers are safe.
1:22
In some cases, scammers will manipulate
1:24
the caller ID information through a
1:25
technique called spoofing. So, you get a
1:28
phone call that says it's from Duke
1:30
Energy, and the voice on the other line
1:31
appears legit, too.
1:33
It sounds like us. They say they're with
1:35
us, but they're not. Consider saving the
1:37
numbers listed on the back of your
1:38
utility bills in your phone, Duke Energy
1:40
recommends, so you know when your actual
1:43
utility company is trying to call you.
1:45
And if the voice on the other line
1:46
threatens to immediately disconnect your
1:48
services if you don't pay, that's never
1:50
something we would do. Um, we always we
1:52
have a variety of financial assistance
1:54
programs that we work with our customers
1:56
and we're never going to threaten
1:57
immediate disconnections.
1:58
Be suspicious if the caller demands
2:00
payment through cash, gift cards, or
2:01
cryptocurrency.
2:03
We're never going to mandate how they
2:04
pay. So that again is another red flag.
2:07
Scammers aren't shy. In fact, utility
2:09
scams are the third highest inperson
2:11
scams. The Better Business Bureau says
2:13
scammers will come to the door and say,
2:14
"If you pay us, we'll get your lights
2:16
back on quicker." Again, never something
2:18
we would do.
2:20
So, just keep all this in mind the next
2:22
time somebody shows up or calls claiming
2:23
to be with your utility company. If
2:25
they're in person, you can always ask to
2:27
see their badge. Or you can call your
2:29
utility company, Haley, with that number
2:30
you have saved in your phone. Ask them
2:32
to verify the name of their employee
2:34
who's contacting you and the issue
2:35
they're claiming to be there about.
2:37
Yeah. Unfortunately, you can never be
2:38
too careful these days, no matter how
2:40
legit someone looks or sounds.
2:42
Exactly.
2:43
All right, Ariel. Thank you.
