Hackers, claiming to have stolen data from a nursery chain, threaten to release more information after a ransom demand is unmet. Authorities are investigating, and cybersecurity experts warn that paying the ransom doesn't guarantee data suppression. #cybersecurity #dataleak #hackers #KiddoNursery

A very good evening and we begin with
0:01
breaking news. Hackers who claim to have
0:04
stolen pictures, names, and addresses of
0:06
thousands of children in a cyber attack
0:09
on a nursery chain have told Sky News
0:11
they will release more data tonight. The
0:14
group calling itself Radiant posted
0:17
images of children from the kiddo
0:19
nursery chain on the dark web and
0:21
demanded a ransom from the company.
0:24
Culture Minister Ian Murray told Sky
0:26
News authorities will pursue those
0:28
responsible. I can assure everyone that
0:31
the full force of government and full
0:33
force of the justice system will be here
0:35
in terms of what the this particular
0:37
instance but in all the other instance
0:38
you'll have seen this week from the
0:40
Jaguar Land Rover instance that the
0:41
government are fully backing the supply
0:43
chains and that company in order to get
0:44
through this particular difficulty and
0:46
we'll be having the same approach to any
0:48
business or any organization who's
0:50
infiltrated in this way but this
0:51
organized criminality will be there'll
0:54
be no stone left unturned in terms of
0:56
dealing with it.
0:58
Well, we've also heard this evening from
1:00
former chief executive of the National
1:02
Cyber Security Center, Kieran Martin,
1:05
who explained what would happen if the
1:06
ransom was paid. What history suggests,
1:10
every so often police, even when the
1:13
criminals are abroad, they hack the
1:15
criminals and they get into their
1:17
digital infrastructure. And what do they
1:19
find? They find that even when companies
1:21
have paid, they've kept the data. Why do
1:23
they keep the data? Because they sell it
1:25
to other criminals. They use it for
1:26
scams. They use it for frauds. this data
1:28
is not coming back. I'm really sorry.
1:30
That's the that's the bit that I would
1:31
say that isn't reassuring. There's no
1:33
way of guaranteeing the suppression of
1:35
this data. And if and when law
1:37
enforcement get to this group, they call
1:39
themselves the Radian Group. They appear
1:40
to be new. And even if the nursery pays
1:44
the ransom, they'll find the data. They
1:46
won't delete it. They never do.
1:49
Skies. Rachel Venerables joins me now.
1:52
So, this group, Rachel, clearly not
1:54
getting their way and now telling us
1:56
they're going to issue more threats and
1:58
potentially release more information.
2:00
Very much so. I mean, this is the way
2:02
that this group clearly and others like
2:05
it, as we've seen before, operate. Data
2:07
is stolen. Uh they go to the company,
2:10
they go to the people in charge and they
2:11
say, "Give me some money or else." And
2:14
obviously in this instance certainly
2:16
we've heard Sky News has heard directly
2:18
from individuals who claim to be from
2:21
the group behind this hack. They call
2:22
themselves Radiant. They say that the
2:25
kiddo nursery group have not been
2:27
engaging with them. They say certainly
2:28
they haven't been paid the amount that
2:30
they have demanded. And so we heard
2:33
already this week how information around
2:36
10 children who go to these nurseries
2:38
had been published on the dark web. And
2:40
within the past couple of hours, Sky
2:42
News has spoken to individuals claiming
2:44
to be from Radiant who say that they
2:47
will publish any minute now effectively
2:50
more information. Information about 30
2:53
children they say and also the personal
2:56
information of around 100 members of
2:58
staff and that's personal information
3:00
about those individuals. We're talking
3:02
about full names, national insurance
3:05
numbers, date of birth, date of births,
3:07
addresses and so on. Uh obviously a
3:10
deeply insidious development, a deeply
3:13
concerning development to have this
3:14
warning uh come from these individuals
3:18
come from this group claiming to be
3:19
radiant uh who say to Sky News that
3:22
they've stolen information uh around
3:25
21,000
3:26
people connected to the kiddo nursery
3:29
group which has nurseries all over the
3:30
world. They've told us that every UK
3:32
nursery associated with kiddo has been
3:34
affected. That's 18 we understand in
3:37
total. some 8,000 children's data
3:39
including things like photographs have
3:41
been stolen. They also claimed to us to
3:44
have stolen things like medical data,
3:46
the giving of drugs and medication to
3:49
these children and also things like
3:50
safeguarding incidents and moments like
3:53
that. Incident logs have also been
3:55
taken. And this was completely
3:56
unsolicited, but they sent to Sky News
3:59
an example of one of those incident logs
4:01
to prove that they had this data.
4:03
Though, of course, we have no intention
4:05
of sharing this any further. They
4:07
clearly just wanted to demonstrate what
4:08
it is that they have. And as I've
4:10
mentioned already, they claim that
4:12
within any minute uh they will publish
4:14
more information this on the dark web as
4:17
they continue to try to extort money
4:19
from the kiddo group. Now, we asked how
4:21
much money they've asked for. They say
4:23
that typically they request from a
4:25
company 1.5% of their yearly revenue,
4:28
their yearly income. In this instance,
4:31
we're talking about hundreds. That would
4:32
be of thousands of pounds. Of course,
4:34
that has not been verified. And this is
4:36
all alleged by these individuals who
4:39
claim that they will be publishing more
4:40
information relating to children and
4:43
staff soon. Certainly this afternoon
4:45
they claim. Now kiddo have been
4:47
contacted multiple times uh since the
4:50
news of this hack broke by Sky News.
4:52
They haven't yet responded to these
4:54
requests for comment. While the
4:55
Metropolitan Police had previously said
4:57
that they received a referral about this
4:59
on Thursday following reports they say
5:02
of a ransomware attack on a Londonbased
5:04
organization. inquiries they say
5:06
ongoing. They are in the early stages
5:08
with the Met Cyber Crime Unit and they
5:10
stress that no arrests have been made.
5:14
Rachel, we will return to you if there's
5:16
an update.
