Welcome back to our Taiwanese Street Food tour series. This is episode 3. In today’s video, we are focusing on delicious MOUNTAIN cuisine in Maokong, just outside of Taipei City. We start our day at Bitan Scenic area (Xindian Station) to eat a traditional Taiwanese meal for breakfast. We ordered rice noodle soup 米粉湯, braised tofu 滷豆腐, crispy ribs 脆骨 (which were not crispy at all), and boiled radish 蘿蔔. The food was simple and fresh, and very affordable at 140 NTD (USD $4.66). It was then time to hike one of our favorite trails in Taipei known as Yinhe Trail. Our taxi from Xindian Station to the trailhead was 175 NTD (USD $5.83). There is a cave/temple/waterfall you can visit and continue along the trail to reach Maokong, which used to grow the most tea for Taipei. There are still lots of tea farms dotted along the mountains. In Maokong, there are many tea houses and restaurants serving food and snacks infused with tea. We ordered a set meal that included tea fried rice, tea smoked chicken, mountain style shrimp, egg tofu with tea leaves and a chicken and mushroom soup. The entire set came to 1000 NTD (USD $33.29). For dessert, we had an oolong tea popsicle. From Maokong, we made our way back to Taipei via Maokong Gondola using the Crystal Cabin. The Crystal Cabin has a glass floor to allow 360° views of the tea fields, rolling mountains and Taipei 101 in the distance. The gondola is easy to use using EasyCard costing 100 NTD (USD $3.33).
