7:56
Spirit one God forever and ever
8:07
foreign a reading from the letter of Saint Paul
8:12
to the Romans brothers and sisters if you confess with your mouth that
8:18
Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you
8:24
will be saved for One Believes with the heart and so is Justified and one confesses with the
8:32
mouth and so is saved the scripture says no one who believes
8:38
in him will be put to shame there is no distinction between Jew and
8:43
Greek the same Lord is Lord of all enriching all who call upon him
8:50
for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved
8:55
but how can they call on him in whom they have not believed and how can they
9:01
believe in him of whom they have not heard and how can they hear without someone to
9:08
preach and how can people preach unless they are sent
9:13
as it is written how beautiful are the feet of those who bring the good news
9:18
but not everyone has heeded the good news for Isaiah says Lord who has
9:25
believed what was heard from us thus faith comes from what is heard and
9:32
what is heard comes through the word of Christ but I ask did they not hear
9:38
certainly they did for their voice has gone forth to all the Earth and their
9:44
words to the end of the world the word of the Lord
9:53
the judgments of the Lord are true and all of them are just the judgments of
9:59
the Lord are true and all of them are just the law of the Lord is Lord is perfect
10:06
refreshing the soul the decree of the Lord is trustworthy giving wisdom to the
10:12
simple the judgments of the Lord are true and all of them are just
10:18
the precepts of the Lord are right rejoicing the heart the command of the
10:24
Lord is clear enlightening the eye the judgments of the Lord are true and
10:30
all of them are just the fear of the Lord is pure enduring forever the ordinances of the Lord are
10:37
true all of them just the judgments of the Lord are true and all of them are
10:44
just they are more precious than gold than a heap of purist gold sweeter also than
10:51
syrup or honey from the comb the judgments of the Lord are true and
10:58
all of them are just
11:14
the Lord be with you a reading from the holy Gospel According to Saint Matthew
11:21
as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee he saw two brothers Simon who is
11:26
called Peter and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea they were fishermen and he said to them come after
11:33
me and I will make you Fishers of Men at once they left their Nets and followed
11:38
him he walked along from there and saw two other brothers James the son of Zebedee and his brother John they were
11:45
in a boat and there with their father Zebedee mending their Nets he called them and immediately they left their
11:51
boat and their father and followed him the gospel of the Lord
11:59
I'm going to pick on my Italian friends again today specifically joking about
12:04
the Saint Joseph altar because there is a very specific Tradition at the Saint Joseph altar that cheese not be served
12:12
and so even when it comes to the serving of the pasta and the Suga you put breadcrumbs out instead of Parmesan
12:19
cheese why because it's land and that way of thinking is a very interesting
12:25
way of thinking but it's a problematic way of thinking especially when it comes to something like today right we've just
12:31
got into the Advent season the big thing about Advent that most of us notice beside the beautiful purple vestments is
12:38
that hey there's no glorium which of course makes us feel like mass is way shorter even though it saves us about approximately nine and a half seconds
12:44
but we say gosh that's the big deal that's the thing that stands out to us and yet here we are just a half a week
12:51
in and we're saying the Gloria isn't that wrong shouldn't we sort of like the
12:56
Saint Joseph Altar and the parmesan cheese shouldn't we not not do the Gloria because we're in the midst of
13:02
this penitential season and you had the exact same questions that arise when we come to something like Saint Joseph's
13:09
Day or Saint Patrick's Day or even the beginning of the tribulum where we celebrate the chrism mass or we
13:15
celebrate the mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday and we go gosh we're in
13:20
the most penitential of all days the statues are covered and here we are singing the Gloria doesn't that seem
13:27
weird doesn't it seem peculiar and yet it gives us an opportunity to think about something that we rarely have time
13:34
to think about and certainly that wouldn't fit in a Sunday sermon very well but that is the question of the way
13:41
the Lord is always intermingling and the church does this as well that which is
13:47
both fasty and feasty and right down the middle boring the ordinary all together
13:54
and of course this is something that the modern calendar has screwed up like a lot of things in the full calendar it
14:00
made a lot more sense because we had a lot of fast days that were sprinkled throughout the year and we had a lot of
14:05
more more feast days that were sprinkled throughout the year and so any given
14:10
Parish would have their Parish Feast Day their Parish secondary Feast Day their Diocesan feast day there are secondary
14:17
dos and feast day you'd have a national Patron and a secondary National Patron you might have a state or even a city's
14:24
patron saint you know it's an Andrew for example today is the patron saint of Scotland as well as the patron saint of
14:30
golf interestingly enough and the patron saint of a whole pile of dioceses and individual parishes and so regardless of
14:38
the fact it's a feast day in The Universal Church for those places it would have been something that would be
14:44
a moment of Glory even when there's purple vestments all around and of
14:49
course I think that's something good for us to remember and I'm not I I will say I've tried to argue this with the
14:55
Italians for Saint Joseph altar it doesn't fly it's just not worth it new Mormons Catholics are not worth picking
15:01
fights with it's just it's you know there are bruises and cuts that you know you can't see but it's it's important to
15:07
be aware of but but it is important I think and there's a very practical lesson to come from it where we say Yeah
15:14
in the midst of wonderful Joys the Lord will give us moments of difficulty and
15:20
trial in the midst of difficulty and trial the Lord will give us joyful moments it's sort of like that
15:26
incredibly Awkward Moment uh when you're not not for most of us who have grown but when you go to the funerals you know
15:33
and you start going to more funerals there's that moment when the bereaved laughs for the first time and maybe
15:38
they're standing next to the the corpse of their their loved one maybe their their uh you know in another room but
15:45
there's that moment where you get that first chuckle the first ray of sunshine and of course immediately the bereaved
15:51
almost always feels bad about it right it feels gosh this is this is not okay because I'm supposed to be mourning I'm
15:57
supposed to be way down and over over the course of years we come to understand that's just not the way life
16:02
works that's not the way Faith Works there is Joy that's inters interspersed
16:07
with all sorts of other things and so it's it's worth kind of thinking about because the Liturgy is meant to be an
16:15
icon of what the human life is supposed to look like and so there are moments of
16:20
Joy sprinkled in even to moments where even to Seasons rather where sobriety is
16:27
the order of the day and of course that is the great theme of Advent it's not meant to be depressing it's not meant to
16:34
be penitential it's meant to be sober the idea of waiting on the Lord not
16:39
about being explosive and yet here on the feast of Saint Andrew it is meant to
16:44
be a day of Celebration and of course I always remind people it's a feast day which means even in the midst of Advent
16:50
you do have an obligation to eat some carbs and and to Feast because that's part of the way it's designed to work
16:56
there's a priest friend of mine now I'll just kind of leave you with with this is a practical example of how to do this where he he he has a very very strict
17:05
policy on feast days he eats three meals with dessert and usually a glass of wine
17:11
or an Alco beverage on Fast days he eats a single meal with no dessert meatless
17:17
that kind of thing and then regular ordinary times you know where there's not a whole lot going on he has two
17:23
meals and if if someone offers him a glass of wine he drinks it and so his weight is really kind of fun to watch
17:30
because he goes down during Lent he comes up during Easter he goes that you know and it's fun to watch but that's in
17:36
a very real sense the way it's designed to be it may not be healthy that's a disclaimer for you but it is a
17:42
fascinating way to live because the Liturgy really does Define a lot of his life and I mean when things are happy
17:48
he's fat and happy and when things are meant to be a bit more sober or even penitential he's clearly in a bad mood a
17:55
little bit more penitential and there's something to be said for that so even as we celebrate and or even as we embrace
18:02
the sobriety of Advent it's worth celebrating the feast of Saint Andrew in the name of the father and the son and
18:08
the holy spirit amen just as an FYI the book of Nehemiah will have to wait until
18:13
next week we will not have the CU catech cast this morning for a very variety of
18:18
reasons um some of which is that there was a massive storm yesterday and it caused some problems in my my flow of things so
18:25
we will get back to that next week and so after Mass today the feed will just be done but we hope you'll join us next
18:30
week where we'll get the prophet Nehemiah and then our the week not the Nehemiah the prophet um
18:37
somebody and then the week after that the book of Malachy and that will conclude the Old Testament we'll have a
18:44
couple more talks and then we'll be ready to dive into the gospels in the new year
18:59
blessed are you Lord God of all creation for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you fruit of
19:06
the earth and work of human hands it will become for us the bread of life
19:27
foreign blessed are you Lord God of all creation
19:33
through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you fruit of the vine and work of human hands it will become
19:38
our spiritual drink
19:49
pray my brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the almighty father
19:55
may the Lord accept the sacrifice at my hand for the praise and the glory of his name for our good and the good of all
20:02
his holy church grant us almighty God that through these offerings which we bring on the feast day of Saint Andrew
20:08
we may please you by what you have brought and be given Life by what you
20:14
have accepted through Christ Our Lord
20:20
and the Lord be with you lift up your hearts
20:25
and let us give thanks to the Lord our God it is truly right and just our duty and
20:32
our Salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks Lord Holy Father Almighty and eternal God for you Eternal
20:40
Shepherd do not desert your flock but through the Blessed Apostles watch over it and protect it always so that it may
20:47
be governed by those you have appointed Shepherds to lead it in the name of your son and so With Angels and Archangels
20:54
with Thrones and dominions and with all the hosts and powers of Heaven We Sing The Hymn of your glory as Without End we
21:01
acclaim holy holy holy Lord God of hosts Heaven
21:08
and Earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes
21:14
in the name of the Lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy O Lord and all you
21:22
have created rightly gives you praise but through your son our Lord Jesus Christ by the power and working of the
21:29
Holy Spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease
21:35
to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered
21:41
to your name and therefore O Lord we humbly implore you by The Same Spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have
21:48
brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of
21:53
your son our Lord Jesus Christ at whose command we celebrate these Mysteries for
21:59
on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it
22:05
to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body
22:12
which will be given up for you
22:34
in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the
22:40
Chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it
22:46
for this is the Chalice of My Blood the blood of the new and eternal Covenant
22:51
which will be poured out for you and for many for the Forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me
23:16
the mystery of faith we Proclaim your death O Lord and
23:22
profess your Resurrection until you come again and therefore O Lord as we celebrate the
23:28
memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and Ascension into heaven and as we look
23:35
forward to his second coming we offer you in Thanksgiving this holy and Living Sacrifice
23:41
look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you willed to
23:48
reconcile us to yourself and Grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and
23:54
filled with his holy spirit may become one body one Spirit In Christ may he make of us an eternal offering to
24:02
you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the Most Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of God
24:08
because Joseph her spouse with your blessed Apostles and glorious Martyrs and with all the Saints on Whose
24:15
constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help and may the sacrifice of our
24:21
reconciliation we pray O Lord Advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and
24:28
