who raised Jesus Christ
1:46
in the name of the father and of the son and of the Holy Spirit the Lord be with you r
1:52
and as we come before our Lord to offer these sacred Mysteries and All Souls day let us acknowledge our sins now and so
1:58
prepare our hearts I confess to almighty God and to you my
2:05
brothers and sisters that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words
2:11
and what I have done and then what I have failed to do through my fault
2:17
through my fault through my most Grievous form and therefore I ask the
2:22
Blessed Mary ever virgin call the angels and Saints and you my brothers and
2:28
sisters to pray for me to the Lord Our God and may almighty God have mercy on
2:34
us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life Lord have mercy
2:40
Christ have mercy Lord have mercy
2:46
and let us pray listen kindly to our prayers O Lord and
2:51
as our faith in your son raised from the dead is deepened so may Our Hope of
2:56
Resurrection for your departed servants also find new Strength through our Lord
3:02
Jesus Christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit one God forever and ever
3:20
a reading from the book of wisdom The Souls of the just are in the hand of
3:26
God and no torment shall touch them they seemed in the view of the foolish
3:33
to be dead and their passing away was thought and affliction and they're going
3:38
forth from us utter destruction but they are in peace
3:43
for if before men indeed they be punished yet is there it is their
3:49
hopeful of immortality chastised a little they shall be greatly
3:55
blessed because God tried them and found them worthy of himself
4:00
as God as gold in the furnace he proved them and as sacrificial offerings he
4:07
took them to himself in the time of their visitation they shall shine and shall Dart about as
4:14
Sparks through stubble they shall judge Nations and rule over peoples and the Lord shall be their king
4:21
forever those who trust in him shall understand truth and the faithful shall abide with
4:29
him in love because grace and mercy are with his holy ones and his care is with
4:36
his elect the word of the Lord
4:44
the Lord is my shepherd there is nothing I shall want the Lord is my shepherd
4:49
there is nothing I shall want the Lord is my shepherd I shall not want
4:56
in verdant pastures he gives me Repose beside restful Waters he leads me he
5:03
refreshes my soul the Lord is my shepherd there is nothing I shall want
5:09
he guides me in right paths for his name's sake even though I walk in the
5:14
dark Valley I fear no evil for you are at my side with your rod and your staff
5:20
that give me courage the Lord is my shepherd there is nothing I shall want
5:27
you spread the table before me in the sight of my foes you anoint my head with
5:32
oil my cup overflows the Lord is my shepherd nothing I shall want only
5:40
goodness and kindness follow me all the days of my life and I shall dwell in the
5:46
house of the Lord for years to come the Lord is my shepherd there is nothing I
5:52
shall want a reading from the letter of Saint Paul
5:57
to the Romans brothers and sisters hope does not disappoint because the
6:03
love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the holy spirit that has
6:09
been given to us for Christ while we were still helpless died at the appointed time for the
6:16
ungodly indeed only with difficulty does one die for a just person though perhaps for a
6:24
good person one might even find courage to die but God proves his love for us and that
6:31
while we were still sinners Christ died for us how much more then since we are
6:37
now justified by his blood will we be saved through him from the Wrath
6:43
indeed if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of
6:49
his son how much more once reconciled will we be saved by his life
6:56
not only that but we also boast of God through our Lord Jesus Christ through
7:02
whom we have now received reconciliation the word of the Lord
7:34
the Lord be with you a reading from the holy Gospel According to Saint Matthew
7:40
Rory To You O Lord when Jesus saw the crowds he went up the mountain and after he had sat down his
7:46
disciples came to him and he began to teach them saying blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of
7:54
heaven and blessed are they who mourn for they will be comforted blessed are the meek for they will
8:01
inherit the land blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will be
8:07
satisfied blessed are the merciful for they will be shown Mercy blessed are the Queen of
8:14
Heart for they will see God blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called children of God
8:21
blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness for theirs is the kingdom of heaven
8:28
blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me
8:35
rejoice and be glad for your reward will be great in heaven
8:40
the gospel of the Lord
8:47
well All Saints Day In All Souls day are certainly meant to be seen in relationship to one another and of
8:53
course we have the same gospel which is nice for kind of bringing that forward in a very very real way just as All
8:59
Souls day Are All Saints Day begs the question of why we have saints if
9:04
they're just going to be in perfect union with Jesus Christ All Souls day causes us to beg the question of look if
9:11
these folks are going to be in heaven and time is largely meaningless in
9:16
eternity then why are we worried about it why do we need to think about it and we have the mentality that arises in our
9:23
modern world in particular where we just want to kind of collapse things down into their simplest forms after all our
9:30
Protestant brothers and sisters would stand by the five fundamentals you know that there's no point in all of this
9:36
complicated thinking if all I need to do is love Jesus or if all I need to do is
9:42
trust Jesus why the complexity why not just kind of collapse everything into
9:47
its Simplicity and engage that of course the problem with that is once you
9:53
experience love collapsing things down doesn't make sense I mean at the end of the day a
9:58
family is just some people living together but for the love of God it ain't that way when you actually love
10:04
the people you live with then you have all sorts of complexity and drama it's one of the reasons that it's so
10:10
difficult for people who do not live in a family like me to give family advice
10:16
or provide marital counseling because I don't have the training to do that and so someone comes in and says all this
10:23
stuff in my mind because I have no spouse which I'm not very happy about just be aware but but that reality is
10:30
such that I look and go just say this you know and the person goes if I said that that would cause drama for weeks
10:36
which is why I try not to give marital counseling it's one of those things where once you love someone the
10:43
complexity matters when you love you can't just collapse things down to
10:49
Simplicity by its nature love demands a fullness an abundance it's I think tell
10:55
and important to realize that all of the fathers of modern philosophy this is
11:01
something I came across a month ago that blew my mind all of the fathers of modern philosophy Renee Descartes
11:08
Jean-Jacques Rousseau Emmanuel Kant were all Bachelors they had no family life
11:13
whatsoever and so when they wrote they wrote as people who were not engaged in
11:20
family life and so they wrote about how the state should be everybody's great aspiration
11:27
and goal but they did so because they had no family life they didn't have someone to love in that profound way and
11:34
that changes the whole way we think about everything and so when we think about All Souls
11:41
when we think about a Purgatory when we think about eternity when we think about
11:46
death we can collapse that down when it's someone else but if it's someone we love
11:53
abundance and not collapse is what we think about and that's the value of
11:59
remembering those we love who have died it's not just about collapsing it down
12:04
and saying well as as the monk at my Abby said when I was a seminarian We buried a sweet Monk and he said the
12:11
Abbot goes well in six months to a year he's going to be a thin layer of carbon
12:16
and no one's going to care and we want good God that's Bleak I mean it's just awful thinking about our beloved dead
12:24
that way that's not the way we want to do it because we love them we may not care so much whether you know Bob Jones
12:31
who died in Philadelphia in 1861 you know who cares but but the ones we love
12:37
abundance and not collapse is what is the order of the day and so it is when
12:42
we think about the holy souls in purgatory we want to love them rather
12:47
than just saying their situation is their situation and when we get there it'll be our situation we just don't
12:53
need to worry about it but when we think about purgatory we think about God's
12:58
love Purgatory is an extension of God's loving Mercy because he says to us
13:03
listen I created you in the world but I created you imperfectly and I created you with a limited knowledge and a
13:10
limited perspective and I think we all experience having a limited knowledge and a limited perspective and yet still
13:16
the Lord shows us his goodness albeit in very limited ways through these very very small senses these five senses that
13:24
we have in purgatory we will have complete knowledge so we will not be
13:29
limited but the Lord still gives us this opportunity to be purified this
13:35
opportunity to be perfected which is an Incredible Gift because of course we know there are scriptures that tell us
13:41
only the pure of heart shall see God we just read them and the scriptures that tell us all have sinned and fallen short
13:49
of the glory of God no one is good but God alone and when we think about these
13:54
two scriptures we realize they don't coincide they don't mix together there are simply the reality that if both of
14:00
those are true we're all going to burn and that's it full stop
14:06
but when we realize that the Lord has built into his this this religion this
14:11
worship of him this Incredible Gift of Mercy we start to understand that and see that
14:19
only as an extension of God's love just as the idea that Saint Anthony of
14:24
Padua finds keys and Saint Blaise doesn't seems completely absurd
14:30
when we realize that God is not trying to Simply make things logical according to our way of doing it the Lord is
14:37
building relationships and the Lord is giving us connections and so it is that we have this connection with the holy
14:44
souls in purgatory and the Lord asks us to pray for them now we got we could ask
14:49
ourselves what can my prayers honestly do to help Bob Jones who died in Philadelphia a hundred years ago get to
14:56
heaven and in the same exact way we could ask ourselves why is it that Saint Anthony of Padua is responsible for people
15:03
finding their keys according to our human logic there's no reasonable way to do it except that for whatever reason
15:10
the Lord chose going back to the Old Testament to have us relate to him in a similar
15:18
way to the way he wants me to relate to him he wants us to see ourselves as
15:24
individuals and part of a family and so too he wants to see us within the context of the church as individuals
15:31
seeking eternal life but also as members of the church visible and members of the
15:37
church in purgatory and members of the church in heaven all connected together working together praying together
15:45
journeying together and so we do have a moral obligation to pray for the holy
15:51
souls in purgatory just as we have a moral obligation to ask for the intercession of those souls in heaven
15:57
because for whatever reason God in his goodness and in His abundant love has decided that this is us this is what
16:05
we've got we've got the holy souls in heaven helping us we've got the holy souls in purgatory to pray for and we've
16:10
got us trying to get it done with our limited perspective and our limit limited potential and so it's an
16:16
Incredible Gift to us to think about the holy souls as having a sense of purpose
16:21
as we are here to pray for them and as we continue to pray for them even if my
16:27
little grandmother was the sweetest little lady in the whole world and bless her heart she was not even if that were
16:32
the case I would still behoove me to pray for her until my dying day whether or not until
16:39
she appears at the foot of my bed in glowing Angelic attire and says I'm in heaven now you can stop praying for me
16:46
if that happens you let me know I want to know about that but until that happens we need to be praying for our
16:52
beloved dead because the Lord gives us this relationship for a specific purpose
16:57
and a reason because his love is abundant it does not collapse down it
17:04
blossoms out and so the holy souls in heaven that we talked about yesterday the holy souls in purgatory that we
17:10
think about and pray for today this is a relationship these three types of the
17:15
church that are connected to each other and that rely upon each other for salvation and so it is such a wonderful
17:21
day for today for us to be aware of that to connect into that and to ask the Lord
17:27
to look with loving mercy upon the holy souls in purgatory and of course to remember where they are buried because
17:32
the grave functions as a sign and a witness to us both to motivate us but
17:39
also to Humble us I love the fact that the benedictines although the Abbey I went to did not continue to do the
17:45
tradition but the benedictines where I make my retreat in Clear Creek in Oklahoma continue the tradition that
17:50
Saint Benedict put forward and I'll leave us with this simple thought Benedict wrote in his rule Memento Mori
17:58
remember death and so he insisted that all of the young monks who joined the Abbey one of the first things they would
18:05
do is fashion from wood their own casket
18:10
now they don't sleep in their casket that's vampires that's different thing but the the monks would make the casket
18:17
and keep it in the cell with them leaned against the wall as a way of remembering
18:23
that this is where they're going to end up that's why the Abbott said that potentially cruel and extremely uh
18:28
undisconcerting thing about the thin layer of carbon because the idea is by
18:33
looking at that casket we remember that we have a limited time on Earth so we need to get out there and do something
18:40
with it but we also remember that that's where we're going to end up and we humble ourselves and we say if that's
18:47
where I'm going to end up in a short amount of time I need to make sure that Jesus is the hero of my story not me
18:53
that my life is about getting to Heaven not about accomplishing stuff on Earth whatever that may be and that both
19:01
strengthens and enthusiates me and it also humbles and settles me which is
19:07
exactly what is meant to happen here on All Souls day yeah in the name of the father and the son and the holy spirit
19:13
amen
19:29
blessed are you Lord God of all creation for your goodness we have received the
19:34
bread we offer you fruit of the earth and work of human hands it will become for us the bread of life
20:03
blessed are you Lord God of all creation for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer fruit of the
20:10
vine and work of human hands it will become our spiritual drink
20:23
pray my brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to
20:28
God the almighty father and the Lord accept the sacrifices for the praise and
20:34
the glory of his name for our good and good of all is Holy Church look favorably on our offerings O Lord so
20:41

24:01
saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given
