7:59
from the book of wisdom before the Lord the whole universe is as
8:07
a grain from a balance or a drop of Morning Dew come down upon
8:12
the Earth but you have mercy on all because you
8:18
can do all things and you overlook people's sins that they
8:23
may repent for you love all things that are
8:29
and loathe nothing that you have made for what you hated you would not have
8:35
fashioned and how could a thing remain unless you
8:41
wielded or be preserved had it not been called forth by you
8:47
but you spare all things because they are yours O Lord and lover of Souls
8:55
for your imperishable spirit is in all things
9:01
therefore you rebuke the offenders little by little
9:06
warn them and remind them of the sins they are committing
9:12
that they may abandon their wickedness and Believe In You O Lord
9:19
the word of the Lord
9:25
I will praise your name forever my king and my God I will praise your name
9:30
forever my king and my God I will extol you o my God and King and I

your name forever and ever I will praise your name forever my king

9:55
slow to anger and of great kindness the Lord is good to all and
10:01
compassionate toward all his works I will praise your name forever my king
10:08
and my God let all your Works give you thanks O Lord and let your faithful ones bless
10:16
you let them discourse of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might
10:23
I will praise your name forever my king and my God
10:29
the Lord is faithful in all his words and holy in all his works
10:35
the Lord lifts up all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down
10:43
I will praise your name forever my king and my God
10:50
a reading from the second letter of Saint Paul to the Thessalonians
10:56
brothers and sisters we always pray for you that our God may
11:04
make you worthy of his calling and powerfully bring to fulfillment every
11:10
good purpose and every effort of faith that the name of our Lord Jesus may be
11:16
glorified in you and you in him in accord with the grace of our God and
11:23
Lord Jesus Christ we ask you brothers and sisters with
11:29
regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our assembling with him
11:35
not to be shaken out of your mind suddenly or to be alarmed either by a
11:41
spirit or by an oral argument or by a letter allegedly from us to the
11:49
effect that the day of the Lord is at hand

12:44
the Lord be with you a reading from the holy Gospel According to Saint Luke
12:52
at that time Jesus came to Jericho and intended to pass through the town now a
12:57
man there named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man was seeking to see who Jesus was but
13:05
he could not see him because of the crowd for he was short in stature so he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in
13:12
order to see Jesus who was about to pass that way when he reached the place Jesus
13:17
looked up and said Zacchaeus come down quickly for today I must stay at your
13:23
house and he came down quickly and received him with joy and when they all saw this they began to Grumble saying he
13:30
has gone to stay at the house of a sinner but Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord behold half of my
13:37
possessions Lord I shall give to the poor and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times
13:44
over and Jesus said to him today salvation has come to this house because
13:50
this man too is a descendant of Abraham for the son of man has come to seek and
13:56
to save what was lost the gospel of the Lord
14:04
speaking of short and stature we have all kinds of wonderful little saints to talk about when we get next door there
14:10
are donuts ahead but remember calm quiet peaceful you can move to the back of Pew if you need to move one back more
14:16
comfortable there you go we're all squeezed in okay super good so we have we will get into
14:21
that we have all kinds of fun Saints to talk about we hope you'll join us for coffee and donuts next door right after Mass for that but let's start with the
14:29
gospel today which ends with the phrase today salvation has come to this house
14:36
why has salvation come to this house because this man too is a descendant of
14:42
Abraham now one of the most important and one of the most kind of forward aspects of the teaching of Jesus is that
14:50
salvation comes from the Jews but that it will not be extended only to the Jews
14:57
after all we are not the Jews we are the Gentiles and salvation is extended to us
15:03
in a parallel way salvation comes from the church and from the sacraments in
15:11
particular but Salvation is not limited merely to the members of the church
15:17
Jesus is after all Lord of all no we do not believe and the church has
15:25
never taught that simply anyone can be saved
15:31
as with Zacchaeus our faith both the internalization of our faith and the
15:36
external expression of our faith incorporate us into the church Zacchaeus
15:44
climbed the tree to quote see who Jesus was from there he learned about the Lord
15:51
and after having here Jesus preached he expressed his faith he externalized it
15:57
in an act of Charity and then and only then does Jesus say Zacchaeus is now
16:03
clearly part of the ones who are the body of Believers by his actions he is
16:11
incorporated literally made in the body of the church now that's what baptism
16:18
and the sacraments do for us they literally incorporate us they make us
16:25
part of the body of the church and that incorporation matters
16:31
it does not matter because the Catholic Church says some cool secret golden
16:36
ticket system where you show up enough and you put enough money in the basket and we give you a golden ticket and you
16:42
go to heaven kind of thing that's not the way that salvation itself works
16:47
salvation is ultimately the Lord's gift to us but that gift is not a one and
16:55
done it is an ongoing preparation preparation for eternal life now stop
17:02
and think about it for a second just to be clear heaven Heaven is the perfect
17:10
eternal and total Union with Jesus Christ that's
17:15
what heaven is it's not a diner it's not a weird fantasy movie it's not a library or some other bizarre setting Heaven is
17:22
perfect Eternal Union with Jesus Christ with God in eternity now I don't know about you
17:30
but perfect union is not something that my day-to-day life makes me ready for
17:36
perfect union is not something rushing around to get a few things purchased Before Christmas shopping season gets
17:44
going that doesn't help me get into the idea or the mode of perfect union the
17:49
ordinary living of Our Lives doesn't do that I mean imagine for a second pick
17:54
your favorite person in the whole wide world now imagine being locked in a room with them for a month or a year no TV no
18:04
phone no distraction imagine being in perfect union with them everything you
18:10
think they think everything you feel they feel now imagine that going on for
18:15
a month or a year that's intense even if you really like
18:21
the other person that's intense Heaven is perfect union with Jesus
18:28
Christ and that's not the kind of thing that is easy to get ourselves ready for it's not the kind of thing we are
18:34
naturally attuned to and you could understand how faced with eternity of
18:40
perfect union with Jesus or total and complete isolation on my own which is
18:46
hell a lot of people would choose hell as bizarre as that may seem because the
18:52
idea of being in perfect union with Jesus is something that's been rejected throughout my life that I would say I
18:58
don't want that in eternity all of a sudden just because and so it's the getting ready it's the
19:05
preparation for that perfect union of Heaven that the Church offers us
19:11
all of the beliefs all the rituals all the teachings the personal spiritual
19:17
life the moral rules all of that stuff is about getting ready
19:24
for that Eternal moment of Union with God that's why Purgatory matters because
19:30
Purgatory is a last preparation phase before that perfect union begins
19:37
and so it's not as if Catholics are being elitist when we say the Catholic church is the true Christian Church
19:44
we're saying the Catholic Church by means of the sacraments is the church that is equipped to prepare us for
19:52
eternal life that's what we're saying because heaven requires a profound change in every aspect of our natural
20:00
human way of being and the sacraments by their nature soften our hearts they
20:07
Enlighten our minds they humble our spirit they make us ready for eternal
20:13
life with Jesus as much as we can be made ready in the course of this life we
20:19
can have small tastes of that Union with Jesus in the confessional in the Holy
20:25
reception of Holy Communion But ultimately this life is a preparation and that's what incorporation into the
20:33
church really and truly offers us there are other pieces and there's complicated Theology and we could go down all kinds
20:39
of different rabbit holes about that but that preparation is what the Church offers us it's why we don't have very
20:46
many deathbed conversions it's why it's very very difficult to undo years of not
20:53
preparing ourselves for Union with Jesus and so Heaven understood rightly is
20:59
perfect union with Jesus Christ and we simply can't get there overnight and so
21:04
salvation can be understood as being Incorporated slowly over the course of
21:10
time into the body of Jesus being made ready for what heaven really is for
21:17
Union with God and the more we kind of understand that the more we may look and say gosh this
21:24
aspect of the church doesn't make sense to me that's okay the the big fancy
21:29
forestry investment doesn't make sense to me that's fine doing some random ritual that's fine saying gosh this
21:36
moral teaching that's at odds with the world that's fine all of those things are not designed to help us fit in with
21:43
the world around us they're designed precisely to help us become ready for eternal life and so it's not something
21:49
that we have to say gosh this should all just feel natural in many ways it shouldn't as the world becomes more
21:55
insane parts of our faith should feel less and less natural and that's completely okay and so Heaven properly
22:03
understood is something that we are getting ready for each and every time we
22:08
come to church even every each and every time we say a prayer each and every time we offer Penance each and every time we
22:15
do a work of Charity that's what we're looking for that salvation that incorporates us into the body of the
22:22
church and ultimately into the body of Christ and that is what we are asking the Lord to build us up toward a little
22:29
bore and a little more and a little more every time we engage with the Lord in
22:34
any spiritual exercise whether it be in our public masses or in our private prayer lives in the name of the father
22:40
and the son and the holy spirit amen um
22:50
I believe in one God the Father the Almighty maker of heaven and Earth of
22:57
all things visible and invisible I believe in one more of Jesus Christ the
23:03
only begotten Son of God born of the father before all ages God from God
23:09
light from light true God from true God begotten not a consubstantial with the
23:16
following through him all things were made and for us men and for our Salvation he came down from him and by
23:24
the Holy Spirit was incarnated for Urgent Mary and became for our sake he was crucified under
23:31
Pontius Pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day
23:37
in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at
23:42
the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his mission will have
23:49
no end and I believe in the Holy Spirit the Lord The Giver of Life who proceeds
23:55
from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the
24:02
prophets and I believe in one Holy Catholic church I confess one baptism
24:09
for the Forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come
24:16
and now let's bring our prayers and our needs before the Lord
24:34
for our faith family living and deceased for whom this mass is offered let us
24:39
pray to the Lord r Lord hear our prayer for the church that Christ find us eager
24:45
