1:53
a reading from the letter of Saint Paul
1:56
to the Ephesians brothers and sisters
2:00
you are no longer strangers and
2:03
sojourners but your fellow citizens with
2:06
the Holy ones and members of the
2:08
household of God
2:10
built upon the foundation of the
2:13
Apostles and the prophets with Jesus
2:16
Christ himself as the Capstone
2:20
through him the whole structure is held
2:23
together and grows into a temple sacred
2:26
in the Lord
2:28
in him you also are being built together
2:31
into a Dwelling Place of God in the
2:35
spirit
2:37
the word of the Lord
2:42
their message goes out through all the
2:45
Earth their message goes out through all
2:48
the Earth the heavens declare the glory
2:51
of God and the firmament proclaims his
2:54
handiwork
2:55
day pours out the word today and night
2:59
tonight
3:00
imparts knowledge
3:02
their message goes out through all the
3:05
Earth
3:06
not a word nor discourse whose voice is
3:10
not heard through all the Earth their
3:13
voice resounds and to the ends of the
3:15
world their message
3:18
their message goes out through all the
3:20
Earth
3:37
the Lord be with you a reading from the
3:41
holy Gospel According to Saint Luke
3:44
Jesus went up to the mountain to pray
3:47
and he spent the night in prayer to God
3:50
when day came he called his disciples to
3:52
himself and from them he chose 12 whom
3:56
he also named apostles
3:58
Simon whom he named Peter and his
4:00
brother Andrew James John Philip
4:03
Bartholomew Matthew Thomas James the son
4:06
of alphaeus Simon who was called a
4:09
zealot and Judas the son of James and
4:11
Judas Iscariot who became a traitor the
4:14
gospel of the Lord
4:21
so there are just to do some quick math
4:23
only 12 Apostles that Jesus chooses one
4:27
of those Judas we know what happens to
4:29
him they replace him with a cat named
4:31
Matthias that we've never heard of
4:32
before we know nothing I mean nothing
4:36
about this cat Matthias all we know
4:38
about poor uh uh Jude is or rather Jude
4:42
no Simon whoever let's go back and check
4:46
Simon is that he is called a zealot we
4:49
know his political party you know that's
4:50
that's all we know we know basically
4:53
nothing about any of the other Apostles
4:55
other than Peter we get a handful little
4:57
stories about Thomas we get a few little
4:59
details about James we know where most
5:01
of them died but when we stop and think
5:04
about it we know next to nothing about
5:07
any of these people and then we start
5:09
thinking gosh well what about all the
5:11
other people in the gospel I mean this
5:13
weekend we're going to get Zacchaeus we
5:15
know he's short
5:16
you know imagine that we when we go
5:19
through we've been going through the
5:20
Bible on Wednesday mornings for these
5:21
the books of The Bible series and it's
5:24
incredible how often I say we know
5:26
nothing about the author except his name
5:28
and maybe what city he was born in and
5:31
if it were one or two we would say
5:33
that's just an oddity but the fact that
5:35
it's a pattern all through the scripture
5:39
causes us to stop and ask how is it that
5:43
these people the apostles in particular
5:45
are the ones who are receiving the most
5:48
important teaching that's ever been
5:50
given and ever going to be given and yet
5:53
we don't even get a bio on them I mean
5:55
we know more about who's playing tight
5:57
end for the Packers this weekend in 60
5:59
seconds on C on ESPN that we know about
6:02
the entire lives of these incredibly
6:04
important people and the lesson I think
6:07
we can learn from that simple fact is
6:09
that their life story good and important
6:13
and beautiful and wonderful as it may be
6:15
is not not as important to them or to us
6:20
as what they are receiving the
6:23
centerpiece of their life is Jesus their
6:27
story now is Jesus what they have come
6:31
to care about and what matters to them
6:33
is Jesus this is something that started
6:36
to happen very very early in religious
6:39
orders where brothers or sisters said I
6:42
want to join up but I want to leave my
6:44
entire life behind and so in fact I'm
6:46
going to give up my name and I'm going
6:49
to choose to take a new name so so
6:52
people who joined the brothers of Saint
6:54
Anthony of Egypt or people who brought
6:56
joined the benedictines said I'm going
6:58
to leave behind the name I was given at
7:01
Birth and I'm going to take a new name
7:03
in religion because my story is not
7:07
about me I am not the hero of my story
7:11
Jesus is the hero of my story and in
7:15
fact that's something that unifies all
7:17
the saints there are some saints we know
7:19
a heck of a lot about some saints wrote
7:22
autobiographies and they're wonderful
7:24
some Saints have actually been
7:25
videotaped and we've had some saints
7:27
like John Paul II but we know every
7:29
single thing they ever did we basically
7:31
know every time John Paul II flossed we
7:33
have more information about him than you
7:35
can possibly ever use and yet we go all
7:38
the way to the other end of the spectrum
7:39
with someone like Simon who all we know
7:41
is he was a zealot that's a political
7:43
party super good
7:45
and it really doesn't matter whether we
7:48
know everything they did or nothing they
7:50
did because they have come to understand
7:53
that they are not the hero of their life
7:56
story Jesus is
7:58
and in a very real way we can stop and
8:01
say that's the definition of a saint
8:03
it's not somebody who was necessarily
8:06
smart or Wise It's not someone who did
8:09
this or said that or accomplished a lot
8:12
of things or even the ones who got
8:14
knocked down and stood back up you know
8:16
the old kind of 70s era definition of a
8:18
saint
8:19
really and truly the saint is the one
8:21
who comes to realize that Jesus is the
8:24
hero of their life story
8:27
and it's it's okay then if they don't
8:30
know my story it's okay for Simon to say
8:33
it doesn't matter if they know what I
8:35
did or who I am it's okay for for any of
8:38
the Apostles to say it's all right if
8:40
I'm not remembered it's completely okay
8:42
for Matthias to show up and go you don't
8:44
know me but I just got elected in a dice
8:46
game to be a new Apostle and you're
8:48
never going to hear from me ever again
8:50
it's okay for someone like Joseph to say
8:54
Nary a word in the entirety of the Bible
8:57
even though he's an incredibly important
9:00
figure in what goes on because if Jesus
9:03
is the center Jesus is the hero of my
9:06
story then none of this is why I'm doing
9:10
it none of this really matters in a very
9:14
very deep and profound way all of this
9:16
is only valuable in that it draws me
9:18
nearer to Jesus and it draws other
9:21
people to Jesus and the apostles in a
9:23
very real way become iconic in that
9:26
regard because we Don don't know
9:28
anything about most of them and yet
9:30
their message really is that important
9:33
because the unquestionably without any
9:36
doubt the hero of their story is Jesus
9:40
even if we did know every detail of
9:42
Simon's life the hero of Simon's story
9:46
is Jesus
9:48
and so one thing we can work toward in
9:50
our own lives is seeing what we can do
9:52
to make the hero of our story
9:55
Jesus Christ rather than me rather than
9:59
people around me rather than any of
10:00
these kinds of things or accomplishments
10:01
I want Jesus to be the hero of my life
10:05
story and that that is what we need to
10:09
do to become the Saints we want to be in
10:12
the name of the father and of the son
10:13
and of the holy spirit amen
10:20
foreign
10:26
blessed are you Lord God of all creation
10:29
for through your goodness we have
10:31
received the bread we offer you fruit of
10:33
the earth and work of human hands it
10:35
will become for us the bread of life
10:56
blessed are you Lord God of all creation
10:59
for through your goodness we have
11:00
received the wine we offer you fruit of
11:03
the vine and work of human hands it will
11:05
become our spiritual dream
11:13
foreign
11:15
my brothers and sisters that my
11:17
sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to
11:20
God the almighty father may the Lord
11:23
accept the sacrifice of my name for the
11:25
praise and the glory of his name for our
11:28
good and the good of all his holy church
11:30
as we venerate the Perpetual glory of
11:33
the Holy Apostles Simon and Jude O Lord
11:35
we ask that you receive our prayers and
11:38
lead us to worthy celebration of the
11:41
Sacred Mysteries through Christ Our Lord
11:48
the Lord be with you
11:50
lift up your hearts
11:52
let us give thanks to the Lord our God
11:57
it is truly right and just our duty and
11:59
our Salvation always and everywhere to
12:02
give you thanks Lord Holy Father
12:04
Almighty and eternal God for you Eternal
12:07
Shepherd do not desert your flock but
12:10
through the Blessed Apostles watch over
12:12
it and protect it always so that it may
12:14
be governed by those you have appointed
12:16
Shepherds to lead it in the name of your
12:18
son and so With Angels and Archangels
12:21
with Thrones and dominions and with all
12:24
the hosts and powers of Heaven We Sing
12:26
The Hymn of your glory as Without End we
12:28
acclaim
12:30
holy holy holy Lord God of hosts Heaven
12:35
and Earth are full of your glory hosanna
12:38
in the highest blessed is he who comes
12:41
in the name of the Lord hosanna in the
12:44
highest
12:47
and you are indeed holy O Lord and all
12:50
you have created rightly gives you
12:52
praise for through your son our Lord
12:54
Jesus Christ by the power and working of
12:57
the Holy Spirit you give life to all
12:59
things and make them holy and you never
13:02
cease to gather a people to yourself so
13:05
that from the rising of the sun to its
13:07
setting a pure sacrifice may be offered
13:09
to your name and therefore O Lord we
13:12
humbly implore you by The Same Spirit
13:14
graciously make holy these gifts we have
13:17
brought to you for consecration that
13:19
they may become the body and blood of
13:22
your son our Lord Jesus Christ dad whose
13:24
command we celebrate these Mysteries
13:27
from the night he was betrayed he
13:29
himself took bread and giving you thanks
13:30
he said the blessing broke the bread and
13:33
gave it to his disciples saying
13:36
take this all of you and eat of it for
13:39
this is my body which will be given up
13:43
for you
14:05
in a similar way when supper was ended
14:07
he took the chalice and giving you
14:09
thanks he said the blessing and gave the
14:11
Chalice to his disciples saying
14:14
take this all of you and drink from it
14:17
for this is the Chalice of My Blood the
14:21
blood of the new and eternal Covenant
14:23
which will be poured out for you and for
14:24
many for the Forgiveness of sins
14:27
do this in memory of me
14:49
the mystery of faith we Proclaim your
14:54
death O Lord and profess your
14:56
Resurrection until you come again
15:00
therefore O Lord as we celebrate the
15:02
memorial of the saving passion of your
15:04
son his wondrous resurrection and
15:07
Ascension into heaven and as we look
15:10

15:12

15:16
look we pray upon the oblation of your
15:18

15:21

15:23
reconcile us to yourself
15:25
grant that we who are nourished by the
15:27
body and blood of your son and filled
15:29
with his holy spirit may become one body
15:32
one Spirit In Christ may he make of us
15:35
an eternal offering to you so that we
15:37
