the Lord be with you a reading from the holy Gospel According to Saint Matthew Glory To You O Lord
16:45
Jesus said to his disciples you are the salt of the earth
16:50
but if salt loses its taste with what can it be seasoned it is no longer good
16:56
for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot you are the light of
17:01
the world a city set on a mountain cannot be hidden nor do they light a
17:07
lamp and then put it under a bushel basket it is set on a lamp stand where
17:12
it gives light to all in the house just so your light must shine before
17:17
others that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly father
17:23
the gospel of the Lord
17:31
The Story Goes that in the summer of 1065 A.D in Westminster in England King
17:40
Edward was attending the dedication of one of the many many churches that he had built in and around what we call
17:47
London and as he was doing so and celebrating this Festival this kind of
17:53
feast a little man came up to him and asked for alms which was very very typical of the time and so the king
17:59
looked around and said where's my Almanor this is the guy who would actually carry the cash because the king
18:05
would never carry cash and so the Almanor can't be found and of course King Edward being the holy Pious man he
18:12
was is deeply embarrassed and no seriously find my Almanor and they couldn't get him couldn't find him and
18:18
this little guy is still standing there with his hand out and so Edward wanting to do something the only thing he had
18:25
was this ring on his finger which apparently had this large Sapphire fire
18:30
this huge Sapphire on it and so he took the ring off and gave it to the little guy and said here this should provide
18:38
anything you need and just kind of went on with his day you know he wanted to be wanted to take advantage of the day to
18:44
give alms he did it worked out not long after that I mean a matter of
18:49
weeks after that all the way across the world in the Holy Land There are two
18:54
Englishmen who are on pilgrimage and they come across this Desert stretch
19:01
where they get lost which you know is before roads that happens and so they're getting nervous the sun is starting to
19:07
set and they see in a distance what they call quote a band of youths in bright
19:13
Raymond it's a great quotation a band of youths and bright Raymond meaning just there's
19:20
a bunch of young people who are dressed in colorful clothes and with them there's this old guy in white clothing
19:26
and they're amazed because the smile on his face is radiant
19:31
and they can't look away from him and so they go over to this band of youths and
19:36
bright Raymond and the little guy looks at them and says okay before we have a conversation here of what Creed and
19:43
birth are you of what kingdom and King and what do you seek this is just an
19:49
old-fashioned way of saying who are you and what do you want from us and the people say hey we are Christians from
19:56
England King Edward is our King and we're just here on pilgrimage as as way
20:01
of of asking the Lord for forgiveness of our sins and the little guy looks at them and goes you know what you got
20:08
lucky there's actually a little restaurant and an inn right around the corner here and we'll take you there and
20:14
get you some food so they all go around the corner and they sit down at this little Inn and they are eating
20:20
and the little guy with the big smile looks at them and says I know your king and in fact you think I'm just an
20:26
ordinary person but in fact I'm Saint John the Evangelist and your king is a very very good man and he gave me this
20:34
ring just very recently and so I want you now to take this ring back to him and I want you to tell him that in six
20:41
months time he'll be dead and he'll be with me in heaven and so get on the road
20:47
you know and so these guys hustle back they gas up the donkey and make their way back to England and they tell the
20:53
king this and the king is astounded by this because he didn't expect to one die and two didn't expect to go to heaven he
20:59
was you know kind of hopeful but he didn't know and so it plays out that way this is 1065 those of you who are
21:06
history people know that 1066 is the Battle of Hastings King Edward dies in
21:11
January 1066 his utterly inept and disappointing sun takes over it loses
21:17
the kingdom in less than a year at the Battle of of Hastings and in fact an entirely new Dynasty comes in what's
21:25
truly astounding besides this story which is really really quite cool and this story is
21:30
actually repeated there in that painting on either side of king Edward or two parts of that story and our our pilgrims
21:37
here are played by Miss uh Mr Dale Magoon and Miss uh Miss uh Becky Lancaster in our painting over there but
21:45
it's what's amazing about this whole kind of story in history at least is
21:51
that when the New Kingdom showed up generally the rule was everybody from
21:57
the previous kingdom was to be downplayed right it's very much like politics nowadays as soon as the new
22:02
president gets elected everything the previous guy did stunk right and then you swap and it's exactly the same thing back and forth but what was astounding
22:10
is that people would go to the Tomb of the previous King who was from an old Dynasty that we
22:17
don't like the tomb of Edward the Confessor and there were so many miracles that took place there there was
22:24
so much Wonder working and miracle that even the new Kings would go and pray at
22:32
the tomb of king Edward it was just this kind of astounding shocking sort of
22:37
thing that had a profound impact upon the entire nation and in fact upon the
22:43
entire world at that time and the story of the ring is just one of many many miraculous stories associated with
22:51
Edward the Confessor and it makes it a really neat thing for us then not just to have him as a patron but to have
22:58
actually part of his relics here in the church with us and in fact a lot of places have a neat Patron but very very
23:05
few have a neat Patron who is known for working miracles and even fewer have a patron who is known for working miracles
23:12
and have the miraculous relics in the church with us and so if you're looking and saying gosh something's not going
23:17
the way I'd like it to go in my life there's always the shrine of king Edward right over there with miraculous relics
23:23
that you can go and ask for his intercession with but in fact one of the things I think that's an incredible
23:28
Blessing about having him as a patron is the simple fact that I think the biggest struggle we have in the church today
23:36
is how disconnected we've become from the supernaturality of our faith one of
23:44
the things that's very easy for us especially in this day and age is to become a little bit over intellectual
23:49
and to say gosh you know our faith is relatively straightforward and to say you know well I mean I'm going to go to
23:55
church I'm going to give my hour you know every week but that's going to be the story right
24:01
or that's going to be the whole thing or even we read the Bible we go this is a nice story but I'm not really sure I'm
24:07
prepared to believe it actually happened or we say I'm going to send prayers and wishes and well thoughts and good
24:14
intentions across Facebook or Twitter or Instagram or whatever but we lose touch
24:20
with the fact that we actually believe we actually believe that there's a miracle that takes place in the church
24:26
every week we believe that Jesus is truly present in the Holy Eucharist we believe that
24:33
angels and demons are actively doing their thing in the world today we believe in a supernatural faith and the
24:40
fact is that King Edward the Confessor is still working miracles in England
24:45
today his tomb is still very very visited in Westminster Abbey by people
24:51
who are looking to be healed of of issues of physical health or of mental health and the fact is that our faith is
24:59
not merely something that we should kind of get in our head as an idea of somebody that should live in our head it's something that really does go out
25:07
from us it's something that we should be drawn into and lifted up by it is
25:12
Supernatural and that's something that that King Edward can remind us of in an
25:18
incredibly unique and important way because when we get to the point where
25:24
our faith is reduced and it is as simple as well this is just
25:29
kind of a moral code that I'm supposed to follow well then our faith is reduced to
25:35
Buddhism and Buddhism is a hoot but it's not going to get you to heaven or if we get in our head the idea that
25:42
well you know this is just something that we do for the sake of community then we get reduced
25:48
to something that our faith is not meant to be or we get in our head the idea of my faith is just about having a
25:54
relationship with Jesus and that's it that's not good enough
26:00
because our faith is genuinely Supernatural we do we do here because we
26:06
believe one that the Lord wants to send us to Eternity or rather to send us to heaven for all eternity but also because
26:13
we believe that this world around us has a layer on it that is an invisible
26:19
Supernatural layer and if we become disconnected from that then what are our prayers doing
26:25
are we just talking to thin air are we just kind of saying things are we just hoping and wishing for good things or
26:31
are we genuinely of the belief that there is a powerful Supernatural reality I mean I would I
26:39
struggled with this until the first time I went to an exorcism I don't struggle with it anymore it changed my whole
26:44
perspective on the universe because when I realized there's really Supernatural stuff going on y'all I mean good Lord
26:51
and Saint King Edward Saint Edward is a remarkable reminder to us that
26:57
supernaturality is not just random or accidental it is a big deal and so as
27:04
far as Patron Saints Go the reason that we have them is that they provide for us an example and they provide for us
27:10
intercession but in particular our Patron reminds us of the supernaturality
27:16
of the world in which we live and the supernaturality of the church and that is an incredible gift from him and so if
27:23
we find ourselves struggling with any of these sorts of things it's worth taking a moment to realize just how valuable it
27:31
is to have someone else praying for us in particular someone who is known for
27:36
working miracles and we can certainly ask his prayers for our community for our families and for us individually and
27:43
again if you do have some kind of physical health issue that's not going the way that you want things to go if
27:48
you have a mental health issue that's not going the way the things you want to go if food cost you twice as much as it
27:54
used to call as it cost me go ask Saint Edward for help I mean he may leave a sack of 100 bills in your front porch I
28:01
don't know the man works miracles but it's it's not something that is beyond the pale of reason he is a miracle
28:07
worker he's here in our church and what a gift we have in that in the name of the father and of the son and of the
28:13
holy spirit amen
28:22
I believe in one God the Father the Almighty maker of heaven and Earth of
28:29
all things visible and invisible I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ the
28:35
only begotten Son of God born of the father before all ages God from God
28:41
light from light trigger God from true God begotten not made consubstantial
28:47
with the father through him all things were made and for us men and for our
28:52
Salvation he came down from heaven Spirit was incarnated Virgin Mary and
28:59
became man and for our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate he
29:04
suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance
29:09
with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in
29:17
glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end I believe in the Holy Spirit the Lord
29:24
The Giver of Life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father
29:30
and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets I
29:35
believe in one Holy Catholic and Apostolic church I confess one baptism
29:40
for the Forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen
29:48
and now let's bring our prayers and our needs before the Lord for our faith family living and deceased
