a reading from the book of siroc the Lord is a God of Justice who knows
12:21
no favorites though not unduly partial toward the weak yet he hears the Cry of
12:27
the oppressed the Lord is not deaf to the whale of the orphan nor to the Widow
12:33
when she pours out her complaint the one who served God willingly is heard and
12:39
his petition reaches the heavens the prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds it is not rest till it reaches its goal
12:46
nor will it withdraw to the most high response judge justly and affirms the right and
12:53
the Lord will not delay the word of the Lord
12:59
the Lord hears the Cry of the poor
13:04
I Will Bless The Lord at all times his praise shall be ever in my mouth let
13:10
my soul glory in the Lord the lowly will hear me and be glad
13:18
the Lord confronts the evildoers to destroy rembrence of them from the Earth
13:25
when they just cry out the Lord hears them and from all their distress he rescues them
13:33
the Lord is close to the Brokenhearted and those who are crushed in his Spirit he saves the Lord redeems the lives of
13:40
his servants no one incurs guilt who takes refuge in him
13:52
a reading from the second letter of Saint Paul to Timothy beloved
13:58
I am already being poured out like libation and the time of the departure is at hand I have competed well I have
14:05
finished the race I have kept the faith from now on the crown of righteousness awaits me which the Lord the just judge
14:14
will award to me on that day and not only to me but to all who have longed
14:19
for his appearance at my first offense no one appeared on my behalf but everyone deserted me May
14:27
it not be held against them but the Lord stood by me and gave me strength so that
14:32
through me the proclamation might be completed and all the Gentiles might hear it and I was rescued from the
14:39
lion's mouth the Lord will rescue me from every evil threat and will bring me
14:44
safe to his Heavenly King to him glory forever and ever amen the word of the
14:50

15:38
the Lord be with you a reading from the holy Gospel According to Saint Luke
15:45
Jesus addressed this Parable to those who were convinced of their own righteousness and despised everyone else
15:52
two people went up to the temple area to pray one was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector the Pharisee took up
16:00
his position and spoke this prayer to himself oh God I thank you that I am not like
16:06
the rest of humanity greedy dishonest adulterous or even like this tax
16:12
collector I fast twice a week and I pay tithes on my whole income
16:18
but the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and
16:25
prayed o God be merciful to me a sinner I tell you the latter went home
16:31
Justified not the former for whoever exalts himself will be humbled and the one who humbles himself will be exalted
16:39
the gospel of the Lord
16:51
we hear a lot of people invoke the word justice nowadays for all sorts of reasons and so it makes a little bit of
16:59
sense for us to stop and say what does it mean when sirach says the Lord is a
17:05
God of Justice what does it mean for Saint Paul to tell Timothy that the Lord
17:11
is the just judge who will award a crown of righteousness what does it mean for
17:17
Jesus to say that the tax collector is Justified but not the Pharisee
17:24
in law in the practice of law Justice is either about the law itself whether the
17:31
law is fair and equanimous and whatnot or whether it's being applied fairly or
17:36
in Equanimity and that's not super helpful for us in terms of understanding what's going on in Our Gospel now in
17:43
woke philosophy Justice kind of gets boiled down to if it's not my way then
17:48
it's unjust that's really unhelpful for any of this kind of thing in kind of
17:53
broad philosophy Justice is about each one getting what he or she needs to
17:59
thrive we're getting there it's a little bit better but in Christianity Justice
18:04
actually comes in three kind of distinct but slightly interrelated contexts
18:10
Justice is first and foremost an aspect of God's perfection
18:17
God and as part of his perfectness in being God is just he knows his creation
18:24
he knows all of us he knows all that we could possibly need and his Justice
18:30
provides for each of us according to our potential to our purpose and to our perfection
18:38
and so the Lord knows each and every one of us he has made us with a sense of purpose in mind and so he says I'm
18:44
giving you exactly what you need to be who I made you to be which is one
18:51
of those great problems with comparing ourselves to others because we say gosh I wish I could sing better or gosh I
18:56
wish the Lord would have given me this or that I certainly personally wish the Lord would drop a sack of 100 bills on
19:02
my front porch that would be great but the Lord has for whatever reason chosen not to do that in the course of the last
19:08
few months and so I simply look and say okay the Lord Has Done Injustice what is
19:14
necessary for me to be perfected according to the purpose
19:20
for which he made me so Justice is part of God's nature in and of himself
19:26
Justice is also a virtue to be practiced it's a habit in which I owe a duty to
19:34
God a duty to neighbor and a duty to myself now my duty to God of course is
19:39
to know him love him and serve him to worship him my duty to my neighbor is
19:45
roughly the same as my duty to myself I'm supposed to love my neighbor right I'm supposed to will the good of the
19:52
other to be generous to be kind to be compassionate and that's something that's easy enough for us to understand
19:58
we owe Injustice that we recognize Christ in others easy enough
20:04
but perhaps the most important aspect of justice and certainly the one that we're really trying to get at in Our Gospel
20:10
today is the idea that Justice rather we should say God through his
20:18
death and Resurrection in Jesus has decided that Justice is no longer going
20:23
to be the principle and the primary determinant of the universe now stop and
20:30
think for a second about a perfectly just Society right if the society is completely just then if you do the crime
20:37
you do the time you drive 36 miles an hour on Lois Lane over there you're going to jail because you have done the
20:43
crime and in a perfectly just Society it doesn't matter whether you apologize doesn't matter whether you have good
20:49
reason if you did something wrong you deserve punishment for it full stop and
20:56
in the Jewish mind that's the way it worked if my great-great-great-granddaddy did something wrong then I should be
21:03
punished for it because this is what Justice is but the Lord by dying and rising from
21:09
the dead basically says I'm going to make some changes in that and we see in
21:16
the gospel how much of a difference those changes make because when the Lord says I'm going to introduce Mercy
21:24
then we say that changes not just a little bit that changes everything because in a just Society if someone
21:31
does something wrong you have zero incentive to tell anybody about it you
21:37
have zero incentive to repent you have zero incentive to confess you have zero
21:43
incentive to go to confession you have zero incentive to do anything other than
21:49
hide or explain away that this wasn't really a crime or really wasn't a sin at
21:56
all which a lot of folks still seem to be buying into but if God is merciful
22:02
then all of a sudden all that flips and suddenly it's not a question just of
22:07
what happened or how things played out it's a question of what is my attitude
22:14
if God's willing to be merciful then I'm not going to hide the fact that I sinned
22:19
I'm going to rush forward to the Lord and tell him about it and beg his forgiveness because that's a thing in a
22:26
perfectly just Society there is no forgiveness but with God who is merciful there is forgiveness and so instead of
22:33
hiding my sin I tell him about it instead of explaining it away well you know for me calling my brother-in-law
22:41
and saying he's a giant jerk that's not a sin for me because you don't know him he's really a jerk you know that that
22:47
kind of attitude makes sense in a just Society it doesn't make sense though
22:53
with a merciful god and so if I decide to say something mean or unpleasant or gospel or whatever I don't kind of make
23:00
an excuse about that I go to the Lord and I confess it and I say Lord I'm genuinely sorry for it and
23:08
even if I can't muster some genuine sorrow because maybe my brother-in-law is a jerk they aren't actually my
23:13
brothers-in-law are delightful people but it's one of those things where I can still go to confession and say Lord I'm
23:19
sorry I don't feel worse about something that I know is sinful I know I did it
23:26
but there's something that's not playing out right because I'm not feeling as sorrowful as I should bless you and so
23:32
all of this stuff all of this stuff changes upside goes upside down when we
23:38
move from a just Society to a merciful god and that's an incredibly important thing
23:45
for us to keep in mind because this whole notion of attitude is what the
23:50
Lord is calling out in the gospel today he's saying look it's not about whether you did it all right or wrong it's not
23:57
about whether you followed all the rules the attitude we need to have is one that
24:03
looks to the Lord and says Lord I love you you are good you are merciful have have pity on me a sinner because I want
24:11
to serve you as you deserve to be served and even if I do all the things I'm supposed to do there's still going to be
24:18
a lack in me because I'm human and so it's completely okay I mean what's the
24:24
risk going to confession maybe the guy sitting on the other side of the of the
24:30
the little separator there judges you vaguely I mean we really don't but I mean that's the greatest consequence of
24:37
going to confession not go into confession though is ultimately a repudiation of God's mercy it's a
24:44
remarkable thing to think about you know I had a first-hand experience that I was thinking about it recently so I was at
24:50
the gym a couple weeks ago and I'm in there and I'm doing my little barbell routine thing and this cat comes through
24:56
the door this guy he's about five foot nothing and he's probably putting 400
25:01
430 on the scale and this mama jama is kind of waddling in and bless his heart he is just getting through the door and
25:08
he goes and sits on the stationary bike the one that's designed with the extra heavy duty kind of you know weight situation and about three minutes in
25:15
he's huffing and puffing in about four minutes in he's done and I'm in there lifting I'm going my
25:21
man you got to keep going it doesn't matter how much it hurts you've got to go further and and I'm not judging the
25:26
guy at all I'm going I'm glad you're in the gym man that's great and this poor guy clearly doesn't know what to do gets
25:33
off the stationary bike wanders over to a random exercise machine and does some random exercises three or four rounds
25:39
and goes okay I'm done and walks out the door and I was going bless him in a world of justice that was nothing he
25:46
didn't lose an ounce nothing came of that he just came in gave those fine people on the gym some money and left
25:52
there was nothing he got out of it in the Justice of the world but seen Through The Eyes of the mercy
25:59
of God that attitude of his said hey I don't know exactly what to do but I'm
26:04
coming here because I want to be better and man that's an incredible place to be
26:09
because when it comes to the Lord all of us are very much like that guy we all
26:15
have our sins and our failings none of us know exactly how we are to do all the
26:20
crazy aspects of this life but what the Lord wants us to do is show up he wants us to try it's not as if we have
26:27
everything together and so what ultimately we get this idea of attitude that the Lord brings forward in the
26:32
gospel which is huge when it comes to our faith because so much of even the
26:39
question of Justice comes down to attitude am I treating other people with
26:44
Justice and fairness am I treating other people with Mercy am I trying to have my
26:50
relationship with the Lord be a relationship where I just say Lord I did everything right and you owe this to me
26:55
or am I saying Lord I'm doing my best please help me out on everything that's not my best and that whole notion is
27:03
something I think we can all get a hold of it's something we can understand and it's something that's essential to
27:10
Christianity because there are big parts of our faith that really do boil down to
27:15
our attitudes and so today's Gospel is a good opportunity for us in a certain sense to
27:21
look in that spiritual mirror and say where are my attitudes where am I or how
27:27
am I relating to the Lord do I have the attitude of Lord I've got most everything figured out or do I have the
27:33
attitude that says Lord I'm I want to know you better help me to be better and
27:38
Lord I'm sorry for any time I have not been as good as you wanted me to be because that's what the Lord is calling
27:44
for he's calling for the attitude change far far more than he's calling for us to get everything right in the name of the
27:51
father and the son and the holy spirit amen
28:01
blessed are I believe in one God the Father the Almighty maker of heaven and
28:08
Earth of all things visible and invisible I believe in one Lord Jesus
28:14
Christ the only begotten son of God born of the father before all ages God
28:20
from God life providing true God
28:27
through him all things were made and for us and for our Salvation he came down
28:33
from and it became for our sake he was
28:42
crucified under Pontius Pilate he is suffering death and was buried and rose
28:47
again on the third day in accordance to distribution he ascended into heaven and is seated at
28:54
the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have
29:01
no end I believe in the Holy Spirit the Lord The Giver of Life who proceeds from
29:07
the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the
29:14
prophets and I believe in one Holy Catholic and Apostolic church I confess

in touch with everybody who's got a little one for first communion and we'll figure out about twice a month in
49:49
addition to our Sunday morning things where I can get together with the kids for 30 45 minutes and kind of make sure
49:55
that they understand their prayers and whatnot and also make sure your parents understand what what needs to be done
